Confirmed with Link: Leafs sign D Simon Benoit (1 year, $775k) Re-signed ( 3 year, $1.35mm)

Fans are using the "Chef's Kiss" emoji for Benoit. I'm happy he's playing well, but I think it's tragic that he'll likely be gone next season due to a top heavy forward group. Most importantly, Nylander's big dollar contract means anyone overachieving at a good league min. contract will be gone. Sorry to be a downer, but this is TOR culture in a nutshell. The salary cap is what it is...
This is one of those 'not sure if serious' posts. (at least I hope it is )

Benoit is an RFA at seasons end.

If the Leafs want to keep him he isn't going anywhere.

I was, but I had no idea of his status. RFA? I had no idea. I thought because he was on 1 year min. that he was a UFA at the end. On capfriendly it said "signed to standard contract". Perhaps it was hasty to react this way. Perhaps it's PTSD from The Dubas Era.

I have my less than elite days...

I agree with the skating part but his ability with the puck has actually been decent.

He makes alot of smart little passes, has effectively moved the puck across the blueline in the Ozone and has almost never turned the puck over.

He's obviously never going to be some type of strong puck mover or provide much offense but when he's had the puck on his stick he's made consistent reliable decisions.

Heres the turnover #'s from our defence this season

Is that per game for Klingberg or for the season?
Asking for a friend :)

I'm guessing that Benoit probably shouldn't be commanding anything ridiculous on a new contract either as he is essentially a defensive defenceman.

To be fair, that was some of the worst D I’ve seen, he was biblical bad. I guess it shows being behind in camp is a real hinderance for some guys.
Well his game is hit every thing in sight, separate the man from the puck and clear the crease. Hard to do all that in camp against guys you’re going to play with.
Keefe doesn’t know how to coach properly the only thing he has going for him is he has 3 of the top 20 players in the league on the roster

He's about to get the Lyubushkin/Schenn special. Play for the leafs admirably and then get massively overpaid in the off-season.

Treliving would be wise to lock him up asap at no more than $1.5 million on a multi-year deal before the hype train really takes off and the "Leafs Bump" has some team pay him $2.5+ million.

Who would have guessed that what our team needed was a basic defenseman

We’ve had one of these guys buried in our 6-9 rotation for a while now between Bogo, Benn, Dahlstrom etc. Nice to have them be a prime aged RFA though, continuity would be nice in those roles instead of picking a few off the scrap heap every year.

There's no room to overpay for continuity, though. If Benoit comes back at $800k like Giordano did, sure, whatever. Otherwise, just pick up another 2-3 Benoits (or Lagessons, Lajoies, etc.) at league minimum in the offseason and see who makes it through camp (and notably, everyone you listed other than Bogo went to the Marlies before getting called up to play relatively easy 3rd pair minutes).

Yeah we only see these guys after the inevitable 3 simultaneous injuries on D every year, nothing to get crazy over.

I think the fact you always hear so many say Benoit has been a pleasant surprise, or Bogosian has been a pleasant surprise or Schenn has been a pleasant surprise implies a huge amount of this fanbase put way, way, way too much stock into advanced stats and expected shit.

I would be happy to re-sign Benoit at 2 x 1.5 just for continuity in the 6/7 D spot post Giordano's likely retirement. I do think he's a good team guy who brings some needed size and sandpaper
