I fall in the same boat but
ONLY IN TORONTO
do we fall in love with an undrafted plumber that is adequate as a bottom pairing guy.

The worst team in the league didn't want him.

Toronto fans appreciate players like Benoit (and Lagesson) because they do the hard and unglamorous jobs required to be a successful team. They sacrifice their bodies, show up every day and put in a hard effort.

I don’t think that playing on Anaheim previously has any relevance to him today. It was mentioned by many reporters that they were surprised he was not brought back by Anaheim.

He needs to gain some weight in order to play the type of game he likes to play at the NHL level IMO. If he can do that, we may have a Schenn replacement and an extremely solid young bottom pairing defensive defenceman that every team needs

I've always maintained that if you need a 6'3" plus defensive defenseman, the best places to shop in the league are the depth charts of uncompetitive Western Conference teams. Over the years that's sort of their play style and every team drafts, signs and develops these guys. Benoit's just another good example of an undrafted, no pedigree type prospect who just does a good job.

Bogosian was waived by the Sabres and had his contract terminated, then signed with the Lightning and won the Cup the same season. Then he came to Toronto and played well and we wanted to bring him back but he left cause he didn't like Canadian COVID rules, and went back to Tampa where he beat us and went on another finals run. Sometimes guys just need a change of scenery and roles.

To be fair, that was some of the worst D I’ve seen, he was biblical bad. I guess it shows being behind in camp is a real hinderance for some guys.
Or he just took it easy bc he doesn’t want to injure other players in pre-season

I think may have wrongfully assumed he had a spot locked up and didn’t really give max effort.
...or he's not well suited for that style of play with a little more time to make plays and less structure. Could also just be a guy who needs more time.

He's at his best not moving much, not handling the puck much, but winning physical battles and gettin in lanes.

I'm not sure why he'd assume a spot with Rielly, Brodie, McCabe, Gio, Lilly, Kling as locks. There was a good chance we didn't run 7D start the year and Timmins was on our roster last year, so he was always in tough

Fans are using the "Chef's Kiss" emoji for Benoit. I'm happy he's playing well, but I think it's tragic that he'll likely be gone next season due to a top heavy forward group. Most importantly, Nylander's big dollar contract means anyone overachieving at a good league min. contract will be gone. Sorry to be a downer, but this is TOR culture in a nutshell. The salary cap is what it is...

he is a bad hockey player and we should hope we don't see him play any games this year.

Hmmmm...Duby would counter you with a freshly minted Mac Holiwell....:D

It is refreshing to have depth guys that aren't judged on their points or puck moving skills. I like that we have some guys with some piss and vinegar in them. We actually don't need Reaves if our team has some tough defensemen.

I agree with the skating part but his ability with the puck has actually been decent.

He makes alot of smart little passes, has effectively moved the puck across the blueline in the Ozone and has almost never turned the puck over.

He's obviously never going to be some type of strong puck mover or provide much offense but when he's had the puck on his stick he's made consistent reliable decisions.

Heres the turnover #'s from our defence this season

He's awesome. Now we need someone better and more physical to replace Giordano in the 3rd pairing and we're talking

Nope keep mccabe he’s 2 mil per and sign pesce to replace brodie
Pesce won’t be traded this season and if he makes it to UFA I would hope Tre goes after him as a replacement for Brodie. He is a true shut down D we need. If the cap is 87.5/88 while it will be close both could be signed depending on what AAV it will be.

Lock up both lagesson and benoit to 2/3 yr deals @ 1-1.25 aav. Both can rotate throughout the 5-8 spots. Trade timmins.
