Are you kidding me? A chimpanzee could have negotiated this contract. This was all Gio and not Dubas. Wow, people will stretch the limits to praise this guy
If a GM doesn't deserve credit for good contracts, then he doesn't deserve blame for bad ones. Can't have it both ways.

Also, find me this chimpanzee.
You gotta give to get. Sandin is a nice trade chip but the Chychrun ship has sailed now IMO. I'd target a Parayko type dman to play with 44.
Sounds great, but what team is giving up a Parayko-type d-man unless it's a massive overpay? Not many of them around either.

It depends how the contract was negotiated.

These veteran minimum contracts seem to be old player wanting to finish their careers in Toronto. Spezza was pretty open about being willing to sign to anything. Both Thornton and Perry came to the Leafs and said they'd play for minimum.

A GM always deserves blame for signing a bad contract. Sure, the player might have been unreasonable, or may have had leverage, but it's not a hostage situation. If the contract is bad, don't sign it.

Great news, great signing.

I think we still need a top 4 D though. Gio and Lily are a great 3rd pairing, but we shouldn't expect more.

I'll say Reilly and Brodie are sure to stay.

I'm ok the fence with Muzin, he played great in the playoffs, but I suspect he's declining quickly.

I'm not sold on Sandin at all. I don't think he's ready and I'm not sure who he could partner with either.

I don't want to watch Holl anymore.

Reilly - Brodie
Muzzin - ???
Gio - Lily

I really hope they actively shop Holl and resign Boosh or someone who brings the physical game.

I just can’t see another playoff series with Holl being a Dman and caused the Leafs a game or two.

I think muzzin contract is too much considering how slow he is on the ice and the amount of injuries he's had the money is better spent on getting a faster cheaper d man and resigning campbell

Entirely appropriate hometown discount. He's slowly losing his skating legs. There is no guarantee that he'll be much of an NHL defender by the Spring of 2023. He'll be Spezza for the defense playing down in the lineup most of the season and still around to move up to bigger minutes when injuries strike.

Player coach? Maybe plays 50 games and adds experienced depth.

Sometimes the Leafs can catch a break when a player even though its in the twilight of his career wants to come home and spend his last years as a member of the the Leafs.

Gio for similar cap is likely to replace Spezza on the roster as THAT guy, who will provide veteran leadership at 39 years old.

He will be good for Lil and Sandin in terms of development.

I'm not reading 14 pages but I can't see this being a bad signing. League minimum for a defender with experience that played 20 minutes toi in the playoffs. Whether he can do that for the next two years on an up-tempo team like Toronto could be an issue but the benefit far outweighs any issue that might arise from age, new system etc.

Only way this can be a bad signing is if they plan to use him a lot. The money should hint at the planned usage.

He's an alright #6th, I think I would be happy with a 3rd.
We have been roaming on market for years and prices are pretty high for dman, so we should milk Holl for every ounce of value if we decide to trade him. I think it's 2nd + for that 2mill / year contract for 1st PK defender that can play in second pair. Even if we hate him I think he has value for many teams in the league.

I sure hope we're clever now and try to find best opportunity for us to make this team better. We need that goaltender and we have surplus of defense, so which is nice situation to be in. Haven't happened before.

Parayko is very unique defender in this league, it's like going after "Marner-type" winger. Acquiring those kind of players in trade market is almost impossible, if you have prospect that might become Parayko you rarely trade him away.

His slow in regular season game style but excel in playoffs type of hockey.

They might now trade one of Muzzin or Sandin. Use Sandin or Muzzin in a package for either a goalie, Top 6 forward for Tavares.

Rielly Brodie
Gio Liljegren
Muzzin/Sandin Holl

Excellent signing of Gio. Love it. For those that think Muzzin or Sandin will be traded; Muzzin and Gio are off the books in two years leaving only Reilly as the lone left handed D should they trade Sandin. All teams need 7 D as injuries are assured throughout the season. Not to mention, the Leafs will likely sit and rest Muzz/Gio throughout the year subbing in players such as Sandin. My prediction

Reilly-Bush (if a reasonable contract)
Muzzin-Brodie
Gio-Liljegren
Sandin-

Yep bottom pair, 2nd PP and mentor the young D. If Giordano is open to it an eventual bump upstairs or behind the bench when his playing days are over.

At his age 39 he might not even dress for all 82 games and get some back to back games off next year and beyond. When I checked I was surprised he still logged 18-20 minutes a night ATOI/g.

He will be used mainly in the 3rd pairing role, opposite a young player like Liljegren, and become a mentor and used for player development purposes, while occasionally get some specialty time as needed.

At this point in his career he is no longer a top 4 dman as he is 39 and not 29 years old, but I think that is the plan here.
