Everyone watch tkachuk trade like a huge mistake but wich choice did he really had...

The guy ask trade and didn't to come back in calgary... do you keep him out NHL without contrat all season, or resign him for a 1 year deal with a guy who dont want to be here and create a pretty bad atmosphere in locker room...

He had no choixe and get what he was able, he still get annhigh skill foward, a topb3 D and a 1st pick

He biggest mistake was maybe Sutter, thats working first seasom
His biggest mistake was re-signing Huberdeau to that contract and not flipping him at 5.9M or even 50% retention and starting a re-tool.

it is what it is. Better than Dubas IMO. Dude got shortchanged and handcuffed by both johnny hockey and tkachuk as they both wanted to move to US

As long as he fires keefe and doesn't hire sutter its cool with me if this comes to pass. I think he will be able to negotiate better contracts

McPhee would be my choice if available
is this your way of coping with milquetoast

If the rumours are true about Shanny being the guy pulling the strings and micromanaging the GM, I have two questions:

1. What experienced GM would want to take on this mess under those conditions… being Shanny’s puppet?

2. Does it really matter who Shanny brings in, if he’s planning on controlling how the GM handles everything?

Was Lou Shanny's puppet? You think he'd put up with that?

Exactly. Does it really matter who our next GM will be? Like, he'll have some influence but in the end, it's Shanny's/Board of Directors team.

I wouldn't mind trying Treliving for 1-2 years if it's Shanahan that is making all of the big macro decisions and Treliving is more of the negotiator/executor of the plan. Keep in mind it sounds like Shanny is making a lot of the decisions. Not 100 % sure but it sounds like that. If Treliving is just a pure labourer to execute Shanny's decisions it could make sense. In this type of role, I'd actually prefer Treliving to negotiate more then Dubas. But if it's a full GM role I would have preferred Dubas over Treliving.

Depends on what type of control Shanny would want and what type of control Trev would want. It’s possible their views and goals align and he’s be happy to take the job.

“President of hockey team has input in to hockey ops” is not a story. So no.

Treliving is by a mile the best GM available.

People who want Tulsky - a rookie GM - to run this franchise a month out from having to re-sign Matthews, and make decisions on the core four are out of their minds.

He doesn't have experience being the man at the top - negotiating contracts, negotiating deals around the league, dealing with the media, fostering relationships with other GMs, Managing culture, etc .

He would be coming from a AGM role in Carolina (lol) to TORONTO, the biggest/highest pressure market in hockey.
The shine for Tulsky is he is from probably the best run organization in the league in terms of doing more with less. Their scouting investment is near the bottom of the league and their lineup is near the top. If Willie and AM were signed I would be choked if he wasn't given a hard look. But unless they figure that Pridham and co can run point on the extensions someone like Futa or Treliving may be the smarter choice.

The #1 question is what is Shanny’s vision for the team. Is it a brand friendly team that sells jerseys or is it a win at all costs team?

There's probably a lot of exaggeration to the control Shanahan has to the day to day stuff. But a President of Hockey Operations is gonna be involved. Someone like Sweeney in Boston has to deal with a lot worse probably. But everything in Toronto is magnified times 100.

I kind of find it hard to believe he'd have issues with it considering what Dubas was able to do in the last 12 months... hell in the last 3-4 months. We had one of the busiest trade deadlines I've ever seen.

Sure. But as of last week Dubas' is ancient history in Toronto. If this organization is getting a chance to reset the clock, shouldn't they be aiming higher?

Absolutely. If anything I think the perfect candidate is actually Brendan Shanahan.

He's stayed above the fray for a long time, working with a junior partner in a presidential role, sort of removed, politically insulated but sort of the senior architect anyway. He's seen what works, what doesn't. The table's been set, lean on the brain trust, come GM this thing across the finish line.

The Flames flamed out this season bc Marky couldn’t make a save and Darth Vader was inconsistent. We would had the same fate if Sammy didn’t turn out to be good or great, since Murray was injured most of the time.
To me, saying Treliving is not an upgrade to Dubas is really unfair bc if Sammy didnt improve his game, we might not make the playoffs too.

Like I said before, Treliving or whoever the new GM will be judge by playoffs. Who cares if half the core is gone for nothing when the Leafs Win the Cup in June 2024.

Kadri signing... one of the worst, if not the worst of last off season. it reeked of desperation and for as long as Kadri waited, he got paid 2-3 mil more than he's worth, coming off a 'career season' on the cup winner, where again, he never had to face top lines/pairings
then he gave Hub 10.5 after another anomaly 'career season' to save face and not lose the player
Weeger 6.25 are you kidding me, he's at best a middle pair d-man being paid like a #1
The only player Dubas overpaid was Marner.
Matthews got what he deserved
Nylander ended up being a 'steal'
Tavares took a discount to sign with us, and he's still a PPG player, and would be Calgary's #1C right now.
so, how is that for a legitimate case, and i didnt even mention Markstrom at 6 :P

You conveniently left out the most egregious blunders of Dubas' tenure:

- The Tavares contact is an anchor no matter how you spin it

- The term on Matthews' and Marner's contracts were 2-3 years too short given their AAVs

- The Kadri trade - need I say more?

- The Foligno trade - massive overpay

- Letting Hyman walk for a million in AAV

- Mrazek - terrible gamble that cost us assets

- Murray - cost to rid his contract TBD

- The Marchment trade

That’s probably the reality of the situation. Of all the TOP MGT, only Dubas and Spezza left. The rest of them are still here, and I don’t see what’s the difference between now and Dubas being GM a week ago.
If AM and Willie want to sign, fine, if they want to price themself out, fine. Trade them and just build with JT and MM. Lets see what the so called best winger in hockey can do without a Rocket winner as his C.

Having said all that, I think it got to be a reason for Armstrong name in the mix.

I’ve said it already, but Armstrong is the president in STL, why take a demotion?

I guess the argument is the lure of being the guy to win in Toronto. Not sure that’s enough?

I don't really care one way or another if they decide to employ Trev

Like most GM'S I think he will be as good as the people above him allow him to be

You could be the best GM in history but if upper management are interfering idiots your pretty much screwed

So I do laugh when I see people saying Trev should have done a retool in Calgary, he could want that but if his owner says piss off he's going to piss off and if his owner says you will employ that coach your employing that coach

At this point I really believe it won't matter who the next GM is.

The problem starts up in the high floors at MLSE, where no one has a clue how to build a successful (on-ice) hockey team, and it goes right down through Shanahan, the coach and the players.

Basically the Leafs entire organization is a massively dysfunctional family and until there's new leadership at the very top which spreads all the way down into the locker room, I'm going to sadly just accept that there's going to be a lot more disappointment in this franchise's future than successes.

Why go after Tulsky when we have the exact same thing in Pridham (maybe even better). Home grown and knows every aspect of the the roster's contracts, genius capologist, a good age etc. It may not be what Shanny wants but he cuts the learning curve by a country mile from some of the others mentioned.

If Vegas wins the cup - maybe McPhee says he's ready for a new challenge? One can hope.
Well that’s fun :)
