Would Treliving use Sheldon Keefe as a head coach? If the answer is NO then I think a lot of Leaf fans would welcome him.
Treliving's coaching hires don't exactly inspire a lot of confidence in me:
Glenn Gulutzan, has coached a total of four seasons in the NHL, missed playoffs in 3 of them.
Bill Peters - Had 1 very good year in Calgary, was a .500 coach in Carolina. He ended up getting fired due to his racist past being dug up. At the time he was fired, he was appropriately 12-12 in Calgary at that point in the season.
Geoff Ward - Was an interim coach, I think we give him a mulligan for this. Darryl Sutter was an ownership decision so it's not fair to saddle that with Treliving.
Overdrive was talking about how good Pietrangelo looks and how stupid St Louis was in letting him go and replacing him with Faulk and Krug. I recalled that it was quite baffling at the time when all these happened.
Wasn't Doug Armstrong the GM who pissed Pietrangelo off by trading for Faulk and showed no intention of resigning Pietrangelo until the last moment? Why would he suddenly be hailed like a savior too good to be true?
No, negotiations broke down long before that point. That's why he traded for Faulk and signed Krug. If you look at the salary Pietrangelo signed in Vegas it's
a) Heavy on the signing bonuses. St. Louis isn't a rich team (cash wise) they're middle of the pack in revenues and don't have the ability to pay those large lump sum signing bonuses like the Leafs or Rangers do on July 1st. Their highest paid players right now are Jordan Kyrou and Robert Thomas, both get paid $8 million spread over 26 biweekly payments. Pietrangelo on the other hand is paid $8 million on July 1st and gets $4 million in salary for the remainder of the year.
b) Vegas is a no income tax state and Pietro did not give them a discount for that at all. His cap number is $8.8. When he signed that deal he became the third highest paid dman in the league. Pietro was looking to max his earnings on his most recent deal.
