Leafs need to address the goaltending.

Aside from our upcoming Florida and Boston game, the rest of our opponents aren’t too strong. I wouldn’t mind seeing Hildeby get a call up with the added cap flexibility right now.

I haven’t watched him play for the Marlies but his stats look insane right now. Not to mention he was an up and coming young goaltender in the Swedish hockey league. Maybe there’s something there.

It'll be a tough call on whether to re-sign him or not.
Team needs a core Goalie and he doesn't look like that guy.
I don't think the Leafs will resign Samsonov. They will need his cap space to allocate to other roster spots as they will need to reduce their goalie spend.

They'll still need a goalie and a bargain bin one likely won't cut it.

If they spend on defense, Woll will be fine as the starter.
The extra few million from Samsonov will help but that's not enough to make that large an impact on the defense.

Contenders don't pay so little for their goaltending.

They don’t need to test Hildeby now. Let him play in the minors and let Woll play 45+ in the NHL.

Why not? I don’t see any harm in rewarding him for his very strong play in the AHL with a game or two in the NHL against a weaker opponent. Especially when Samsonov keeps shitting the bed.

Carry 3 Goalies?

Because they don’t need him and there’s no sense in rushing him. He’s 22 yrs old, let him play in the minors. They may not need next year, either, and another development year might set them up for years in goal.

You have extra cap flexibility at the moment, he doesn’t require waivers to go up and down and our AHL team is right down the road from our NHL team. So why not?
I can see the pro's and con's to it. I wouldn't expect it though.

You’d be rushing him if the plan was to call him up full time and expect him to be our saviour in net based off a good start in the AHL this year, which no one has suggested. Rewarding a 22 year olds strong play and giving him a taste and feel what the NHL is could also really help his development and push him that much harder knowing he’s pretty close.

Given our cap situation if Klingberg returns, there might not be another opportunity to carry the extra player down the road.

would be the worst thing leafs could do...
lets him develop properly in the AHL unstead of just scrap his confidence/ development. Maybe he will be leafs guy in 2-3 years but right now, hes not an upgrade to Samsonov/Woll

Again, no one said Hildeby should be the guy right now or get an extended look in the NHL right now.

unstead samsonov or Woll are injured and leafs had no choice, they are no good reason for it.

the guy had 9 game experience in north america, can we just give him time to develop and call him when he will be NHL ready.

this season was not just goalie, they was playing trash defensivly and broke both goalie confidence and they need to bring it back and thats will take time. Best thing leafs can do right now is patience and play as good they can defrnsivly to help their goalie to find back their game, thats it

Sure, but they’re in a battle for a playoff spot so I don’t think rewarding one prospect is in the best interest of the team. If they find themselves in a desperate situation, then they’ll bring him up.

Samsonov was the problem yesterday.
At least 2 of the goals were bad, and the winner was bad luck.
Being good defensively does not mean you allow zero shots.

Anyway, leave Hildeby alone until Samsonov goes back on IR.

We're already spending the least on goaltending that we ever have in the Matthews/Marner era. There isn't much room to go lower.

It's a bit of boom or bust position when it comes to salaries. Either the Leafs would be looking for a reliable backup to Woll, which is guy who is probably in the $2 million range, or a true number one goalie, and those salaries are $5+ million.

I mean, I agree that goalie is the most inefficient place to allocate cap, but we're already at pretty much the lowest we can get. Woll has a long ways to go before he could just be handed the outright starter role.

How many games does he have under his belt? Ten? But yeah, bring him up and risk completely destroying his confidence if he gets shelled by the big boys. Brilliant idea.

We have the goalie, it’s Woll.

Woll: 3.0 GSVE (15/76) - between Gibson and Markstrom

Samsonov: -4.8 (65/76) - worse the Jack Campbell

I’ve said it before, right now there is no reason to give Sammy anything other than a back to back game.

Woll is starting to crumble too.

Hopefully he gets it back tonight but recently he's been at best OK and at worst awful

If Samsonov sucks, and he does and has all year, and Woll can't be given the #1 job by your addmission what does tell you?

It should tell you to invest in goaltending
