Leafs need to address the goaltending.

Woll's playing well and needs to have the net for a while , Sammy's a new father so he's not bouncing back at least not this year .

Kid's played 23 NHL games total, 12 this season, also the better part of 4 playoff games. So far, the kid looks great. Goaltenders are voodoo anyway so saying you trust him to take us to the top would be insane. Even more insane are all those people who were whining about his SV% a couple of games into the season when we're talking about a guy who's major league journey has only just begun.

Kid played great last season, he's off to a good start again so there's plenty of reason to be optimistic. The way he's trending there's a good chance he can do a very good job for us in the playoffs and with many other areas that could use improvement and few tradeable assets, any talk of "addressing the goaltending" is crazy talk IMO.

The kid looks great, let the kid play, the end.
Misery loves company, so right now, everyone on this team stinks or is not good enough, whether they actually do/are, or not/are not. Even Carlton the bear. He sucks too. Overpaid and what a softy for polar bear, they are supposed to be the most aggressive bear there is.

Okay, how's this for reality? Leafs goaltending duo ranks 20th in save percentage and has the 9th worst GAA. Granted, a lot of that is Samsonov being putrid, but the stat above matches the eye test. Sammy has has let in a lot of shots that have had no business going in.

I wasn't commenting on their performance, I was commenting on the stupidity of using 'expected' as a metric.

It would be a mistake to go to Samsanov on Thursday now.

Run with Woll through December. Or there is a back to back. He needs to play and get more comfortable. Start Sammy more in a backup role it's no hard feelings it's just for me he is clearly the 2nd best of the two. Capable of winning mind you, more so with last year's Leafs D.

Some interesting stats for the night:

Woll ranks 9th in SV% at .916 (out of 37) in goalies who have play 10 or more games

The Leafs are 10th in the league in terms of high danger scoring against

A lot more goes into it but I think the fact that Woll is doing well relative to his peers as an inexperienced goaltender is showing his capacity as a goalie in the league. Question is if he can show that he's at a starter level more than a backup level. Right now he's showing he can be an effective platoon goalie.

Definitely worth giving some rope. There's a lot to like about his game in terms of positioning, poise, athleticism, and mentality. He's handled the Toronto media extremely well.

On the other side, Samsonov ranks 35th out of 37th in the same light.. eek.

Homer Simpson once said, “Oh, people can come up with statistics to prove anything, Kent. Forty per cent of all people know that.”

..

Clearly Woll has been the better goalie this season. not even a debate.

Another strong performance by Woll.

Think you go right back to him tomorrow night and then give Samsonov the Ottawa game.

Got 4 days off after Saturday (schedule is stupid) so no reason not to let Woll go on a run.
I mean if he gets a shutout against Boston, I’d keep rolling with him. But you also have to get Samsonov in so his confidence isn’t completely destroyed. At the end of the day, we don’t want to run Woll into the ground overplaying him and we’ll need both goalies whether that’s Woll and Samsonov or Woll and whoever else both on their A game if we want to go far.

Yeah. So long as he doesn't have a poor game and lets in a few stinkers, and he's not continually overworked by the team in front of him allowing 40 shots a game against him, no reason not to run with him for a bit.

Sammy's confidence already looks destroyed tbh. Got to figure out how to rebuild it and keep Woll fresh though.

I do think you give Woll the next 3 starts. You got Boston in a big matchup then 4 days off then Ottawa and Nashville next week. Give Sammy one of the back to backs in New York on the 11th and 12th.

Sammy: Alright Keefer, I'll play better and earn my ice.

Keefe: You get the Bruins, and Reaves is playing...

Well tonight did nothing to prove me wrong, in fact tonight took a step closer to proving me right.

REAL #1 goalies don't allow the 1st or 3rd goals either one of them.

Woll does consistently, so does Samsonov.

REAL #1 goalies don't force to score 4 or more most nights to win a game.

Woll does consistently, so does Samsonov.

It would be different if this were a bad team then you'd at least have the excues that the Leafs were a bad team but they aren't, haven't been for years.

Goaltending holds them back
