Leafs need to address the goaltending.

It's funny to me, as good as Lagesson and have been as depth pieces, and they have been, to the point where Benoit is a regular now, NOBODY is saying the defense is good enough which makes sense because It's not.

But the same people that will tell you that a defense that has Simon Benoit on it is not good enough and be right.

Will then lie to you and tell you that a goaltending tandem of Martin Jones and an AHL goalie is good enough

No It's not and if you say it is while also saying the defense Isn't good enough you are a hypocrite.

You can't have it both ways, either they are both good enough

Or neither is good enough.

Neither is good enough but on the tender front sometimes you catch someone on fire and can ride deep.

More of an all hope is not lost situation. The D core ain't pretty though. Not playoff pretty.

The way I see it, Benoit is not the weak link in the defense relative to the depth role he plays. He plays it fine and we need players like him on the bottom pair.

The weakness comes closer to the top. Ideally, there's a player between Rielly and Brodie in the 2 spot, or Brodie is replaced with a much better, bigger, younger workhorse defenseman who can play 25 minutes and basically be a co. number 1. Then everything slots into place properly.

There is no “might have” about it. It did save our season.

Can you imagine if we had to run with a goalie combo of either Sammy/Hildeby, Sammy/Petruzelli or Hildeby/Petruzelli right now?

:oops::oops::oops::oops::oops:

They wouldn't have done that there would be another goalie brought in if Jones wasn't here.

The playoffs are 3 months away, the dead lineis almost 9 weeks away it is WAY to even suggest Jones is the starter in the playoffs.
I'll be more blunt - if Martin Jones is the starter for this team in the playoffs, it won't be a long playoff run. However, he won't be the playoff starter, so no need to worry about it.

You’re actually saying something realistic about the Leafs and not being a total homer?

Gadzooks!!! Is there a lunar eclipse scheduled for tonight?? @Gary Nylund Lol.

Apparently there were some very severe magnetic storms wreaking havoc over the last couple of days. I thought they were supposed to be over by now today but maybe the after effects linger for a while, who knows? :dunno:

Until Woll shows he’s healthy and back in form Jones is the #1 here. You may not like that reality but it is the reality.

Also, there's no need to throw shade at what Martin Jones can or cannot do. He's a established NHL veteran and former workhorse we got on a minor league deal, and has gone deep in the playoffs twice. You watch him play behind a committed defense, there's no real separation between him and a Cam Talbot who is having a career resuscitating year in LA. At the very least he's not going to come in mentally unprepared and singlehandedly lose the game for you.

We also need to be careful about not putting all our faith in Woll even when healthy. His NHL games played total is 26 games. Jones has played 10 games for us in emergency here and by the time Woll comes back Jones will have close to that number of games in relief...

Wonder if Matt Murray could factor into the postseason.

Correct it’s January. Not sure why you find the month to be some revelation

Because the playoffs are 3 months away, the deadline is about 9 weeks away and you are convinced Jones is the playoff starter and I don't know why.

Look at Woll's injury, it came on a nothing play, a muffin shot, it doesn't take much.

We are ONE bad bounce or movement away from not having an NHL goalie, and no Samsonov doesn't count he's mentally broken.

I'm not convinced the game 1 starter is currently on this roster, Woll is injury prone, Samsonov is mentally broken and Martin Jones is Martin Jones

The goalies so far and how the D has sheltered them:

Jones: .930
Woll: .916
Samsonov: .862

Shots Against/60:
Jones: 31.56
Woll: 33.41
Samsonov: 28.58

High Danger Shots Against/60:
Jones: 7.54
Woll: 10.30
Samsonov: 7.73

Both Jones and Woll have been very impressive this season so far while Samsonov is in a battle with Raanta for who is the worst goalie in the league.

The big problem in trying to defend Samsonov is that his shots against numbers are actually quite desirable for a goalie in the NHL. The guy just cant make saves all of a sudden.

Nah, you're just not paying attention. You have concluded that me saying that the Leafs will win the division is some blanket statement about them being the greatest thing in the world. when all along what I keep saying is that the Leafs will win the division because the division is really mediocre (despite Florida's current run). It isn't rocket science. If you are the valedictorian of summer school, you're still the valedictorian. The Leafs are the valedictorian of the Atlantic division.

:help: I’ll admit you’re one entertaining poster. We’re laughing but it’s at you and not with you.
