Friedman said tonight that when the trade freeze is lifted on the 28th that the Leafs will enter the goalie market.

They don't really have a choice, Samsonov can't play, Woll is hurt and Martin Jones is Martin Jones, he's a #3.

Goaltending needs to be addressed.

They should run Jones - Hidelby until Woll is back, unless they are thinking a bigger get like Saros/Gibson/Markstrom.

But hate the idea of using assets on a stop gap.

Kind of scary that Martin Jones is our number 1 right now. He is doing an admirable job. Good pickup by Treliving

With how many teams need goalies more than the leafs, it's hard to believe they'd be going after someone significant. Run woll and Jones and use assets to help the d. If you can get a depth goalie for cheap sure, but now does not seem like the time they can acquire a legit good goalie.

Just keep Samsonov out of the net and things will be ok.
Just have to stop the normal shots .samsonov played his last game like he was in front of a firing squad
His mental game can't be fixed in the NHL .
doesn't matter we've seen young goalies in their teens quit the game over this .

Goalies usually aren't that expensive, so that should help.

Just not sure that there are any half-decent goalies available, that is the bigger issue.

I don't think Jones will keep it up, but how many available goalies are playing better than him right now?

And then if we are trying to get a starter, how many have played better than Woll?

The market just isn't there IMO.

Can they send Samsonov down for a conditioning stint? Maybe giving him 5 games down in the AHL might help his confidence. In the meantime I wouldn’t mind seeing Hildeby get a game or two.
The standard conditioning loan (per Section 13.8) is that, with the consent of the player, a player be sent to the minors for up to 14 days. There are no specific provisions for this, but conventionally it’s one of the team’s extra players who doesn’t play much knocking the rust off. The player counts on the 23-man roster while on the conditioning loan.

I just don't want to rush Hildeby. He's kicking a** in the AHL, he's still super young. Let him be a big fish in a small pond and keep gaining that experience and confidence. His time will come.

I have the highest hopes in him.

If the was any resnoble solution Carolina wouldn't have brought in Dell to a PTO.
LA needs a backup as well.

Jones is our starter till Woll comes back
Hoping Sammy with a break will get himself together. If that fails then waive him bring up Hildeby.

We only have 3 back to backs till till the end of January.

Woll Jones

You guys are acting like Woll is somehow the savior. He he's only played 15 games this year, and a career 26 games.

Yeah he's had a good start to the season, but he is still very much unproven, and anything can happen when he can come back,

Leafs need to make a bold move to get an above average goalie for the next few years, and not do this goalie carousel of who's the #1 every season since Freddie left.

Say what you will about Freddie, he was a solid #1 for this team, it just didn't work out in the playoffs but it wasn't always his fault.

Jones isn't playing very good, but there's something about him that is a calming influence. He must not get rattled at all. There is a reason he won 27 games last year with bad stats.

Woll Jones

What a lazy way of thinking.

They have ONE useable goalie because Woll is injured, and Samsonov is a disgrace to the jersey.

Every team needs 2 goalies.

They need a goalie It's that simple.

I think the Leafs are if the mindset that hopefully with a little bit of time of Sammy will get his shit together if not call up Hildeby.

Till the end of January we only have 3 back to back games.

There is not alot of option if they were
Corolina would have traded for one.

The prices are probably sky high

If they want a new goalie, they can get one.

It doesn't matter what price tag NHL GM's put on their goalies due to goaltending issues on other teams.

Goalies are the cheapest asset in the NHL. All they will get if they don't budge on their price is the honor of bragging about their price tag and then gaining zero assets when the Leafs (for example) don't trade with them.

Ride the crap shoot. Due for a hit.

I just don't know who can reasonably be targeted that would be significantly better. I'd hate to spend assets and it's not even a marginal upgrade at best.

What happens when new goalie lets in 4, 1 stinker, 1 rebound and 2 tips. Are we going to have to find another one? I can't see teams trading us the kind of upgrade we hope we could get. Is Saros actually on the block? Would Hart really be all that great in this market, especially at the acquisition price?

We still need a dman or 2.

Teams have went on runs with rookies in net. If the guy plays well, who cares if he is a rookie?

And you're right that anything can happen. Same thing can be applied to whichever goalie that comes here, except we'd be spending assets and using up more cap space.

Which goalie do you have in mind?

Gibson? Overpaid, big gamble, years of poor play until this year (still not great)

Markstrom? Probably a better option than Gibson, but it's still a gamble. Hasn't been the same since the Oilers series, although looking OK this year

Saros? Doubt the Preds will trade him

All the other (potentially) available pieces don't move the needle at all. Martin, Vejmelka, Halak, Blackwood, etc.

I'm not sure they can do anything of substance during the season, but perhaps a better UFA is out there in the off season?

The NHL in general seems to have a goalie problem.
