Nemec is the kind of guy you trade if you're making a significant upgrade.

To me, you move him for a Quinn Hughes (even though NJ can get him for free if they bide their time) or more realistically... an Owen Power.

You don't trade him for futures. That's just stupid.

What interest does NJ have in futures? They need NHL players for the here and now.

Pieniniemi seems a decent prospect, but not on a level with Nemec.

Unnecessary trade.
Seems a very good return for Nemec. Take the futures and flip them for the nhl players wanted.

The idea is that Nemec wants a change of scenery to be given more of a NHL shot and the Penguins pay a Jiricek type of price to get him. New Jersey would then have that additional currency to use to either just hold onto those picks or use them to improve the team now.

Nemec hasn't demanded a trade, but he did say this a few weeks ago:

Why would Nemec be worth less than Jiricek?

many thanks for your buy low scenario pitch for nemec. we collect it with all the others.
It's fine to say that this proposal doesn't meet the Devils' needs, but it is comparable to what Jiricek got, and is by definition not a 'buy low scenario pitch'.
Devils should be trading picks for young nhl-ready players, not trading young nhl-ready players for picks.

Why would the Penguins shop the Rangers pick? They're staring down the barrel of a really long and really nasty rebuild, and in my learned experience you usually want draft picks for those dark days.
In theory, the idea would be that the young player would still be around for a rebuild, and potentially a better player than what the Penguins would get with those assets.
But not necessarily a better player, which is why the multitude of assets might be worth the gamble for the acquiring team. It's fine if the Devils aren't in the stage of the contention cycle to make that gamble, though.

a) the proposal is based on the assumption devils have to move nemec because he requested a trade like jiricek.
b) nemec had a long and individually good stretch as a nhl top4 d last season.
c) nemec's demotion to the ahl is the result of an off-season injury in the olympic qualifier and newcomers who overachieved in case of kovacevic.

if you offer a similar package as jirecek, you assume he has the same value, despite proofing more on the nhl level. and you assume a failed relationship with the devils organization.
