Can they send Samsonov down for a conditioning stint? Maybe giving him 5 games down in the AHL might help his confidence. In the meantime I wouldn’t mind seeing Hildeby get a game or two.

Send Samsonov down to the Marlies to try to help him regain his confidence and call up Hildeby to back up Jones in the interim.

May as well mail Columbus the two points. Sammy needs to sit on the bench until he figures it out or Jones implodes as well.
I think the opposite. I think it would be a game where he gets the most protection possible. The Leafs should be angry and prepared to roll over Columbus. I think starting him against Ottawa the following week might be more of an issue for him.

They just lost 9-3 to a team that was coming off a 9-4 loss to Columbus. Jackets lost in OT to Washington last night. Doubt they are getting rolled and if Sammy can't stop a beachball like last night, the Leafs will lose IMO.

It's the perfect time to call up Hildeby and give him some NHL starts to me. I don't know what they can do with Samsonov but he's waiver fodder right now. It's just the nature of the business.

He gets claimed, we open cap space. He clears, he gets to play in the AHL. I don't really care either way but it's just not acceptable NHL level performance regardless.

That's drastic decision making. Something this organization hasn't done or not willing

Samsonov it seems every opportunity to get his stuff together.

He's not going to wave anytime soon.

Also it's not fair to Hidelby. It sets him for failure to be the savior of current circumstances. We still have 2 healthy goalies. It's not like he'll be coming in relief of an injury.

Unfortunately we are stuck with Samsonov. They'll waive Jones and going to get picked up by Edmonton

What happened to Ilya Samsonov between last season and this one? The Maple Leafs goaltender has an idea: It's all in his head.

“I don't feel different. It's all mental stuff,” Samsonov said after allowing five goals on 19 shots in a 9-3 loss to the Buffalo Sabres on Thursday night.

The 26-year-old Russian netminder sports an .871 save percentage, 58th among the 59 NHL goalies who have played at least 10 games. The only one worse? Antti Raanta, recently waived by the Carolina Hurricanes.

It's a stark downfall from last season when Samsonov was at .919, tied for sixth with Dallas stud Jake Oettinger among goalies who played at least 30 games.

“It's not about technique. It's not about nothing. Just in the head,” said Samsonov.

It isn't a lack of hard work, either. Before regular practices, he's out working with goalie coach Curtis Sanford, often joined by Nik Antropov and at times Shane Doan. He does something similar on game days when he isn't starting, staying late after morning skates.

“We're working real hard every day,” said Samsonov. “Sometimes you feel really good in the practice, but you need to do some (of the) same in the game. It's just a mentally hard time for me.”

The Leafs' goaltending depth is being challenged. So is general manager Brad Treliving, who might now target a goalie acquisition ahead of defence help. But he'll have to get in line with the Hurricanes and Edmonton Oilers also struggling in that department.

I've come to realize this over the last few years... Someone's opinion of Gibson is an excellent litmus test for whether or not their opinion on goaltending should be taken seriously.

Gibson is an unknown quantity at this point.

Sure there's probably a language barrier, but definitely don't like to read how this guy has idea how to manage his own mental state and confidence in relation to work.

Dear sir. Samsonov is done. Goaltending is an issue.

Plenty of other issues, defensive structure is bad, like really bad, but Samsonov was terrible tonight.

I have been saying goaltending is an issue since Early November, maybe even late October but I'm fairly certain it was early November.

Regardless It's been neatly 2 months, you finally realized I was right.

The Leafs NEED to address their goaltending.

They are 6 points from top spot with the division, with a game in hand and they can't get a f***ing save which should tell you how good they actually are.

Imagine where they'd be if they could get a f***ing save.

Now don't get it twisted I am not saying the defense is perfect, it is not, it is very, very VERY NOT perfect.

That being said I have a hard time blaming 3.79 GAA and an 871 save% on the defense.

That's not a defense issue,

That's not even a goalie issue,

That's gone so far beyond goaltending issue that I don't even know what to call it.

I just know that Samsonov needs to be done, that HAS to be his last game as a Leaf, I don't know how you play him ever again, It's at the point now where playing him is what I like to call a "choose to lose" decision.

It's something I started using whenever Babcock played Hutchinson and now it applies to Samsonov because the choice to play Samsonov is a choice to lose.

And if you respond don't tell me we don't tell me we don't need to address goaltending because Joseph Woll exists.

He does exist but he's injured and unless I missed we don't have an update.

We have ONE useable goalie you need 2.

Therefore they need to address goaltending

I think he'has to be injured first before being eligible for a conditioning stint.

Samsonov’s next start will be with the Marlies. It’s not fair to him or the players to subject him to NHL shooters. He clearly has zero confidence and has no idea what he’s doing out there. Let him go down, play under less pressure and get his confidence back. That won’t happen in the NHL and his mental health is becoming an issue which needs to be taken into account.

I'm not sure he would clear waivers, or that the Leafs would risk exposing him to waivers (or maybe the team can send him to the AHL without waivers for all I know).

Apparently he can be sent down on a two week conditioning stint if he agrees and would not be subject to waivers and if not they waive him and risk him being claimed in order to send him down.
