Leafs need to address the goaltending.

  • Xenforo Cloud will be upgrading us to version 2.3.5 on March 3rd at 12 AM GMT. This version has increased stability and fixes several bugs. We expect downtime for the duration of the update. The admin team will continue to work on existing issues, templates and upgrade all necessary available addons to minimize impact of this new version. Click Here for Updates
We can point to all these other issues, but the core problem is shit goaltending, back breaking softies, not bailing out a defensive let down, just sub par, make your eyes bleed tending. It's the number one problem with this team ainec. We'd be having a lot less conversations about other things if we had serviceable goaltending, we've had dogshit instead.

Even Sam admitted he's a head case last night, he's cooked. It's like thinking Campbell is going to recapture his glory in Edmonton.

Yeah Campbell fell apart on us, but I don't think he ever looked this shot on the Leafs bench. Last night they were showing Samsonov as the players walked past him into the room for the second intermission and I saw the face of a guy who knew his NHL career was probably over. Campbell did that kicked puppy look plenty, but he knew he was still going to be a decent commodity as a free agent.
Every goalie since Lou left has fallen apart. Andy, Soup, Hutch, Murray and now Sammy. It is like the chicken and the egg. Will a good goalie fix the D or a good D fix the goalie? Tre needs to answer that question and he needs to answer it correctly or we know how this will end.

yeeeeaaah.... i'm thinking and hoping that's the last Samsonov start. Send him down and bring up an AHLer to back up jones.

I don't know how anyone could have watched Samsonov last year and thought "yea, this is a goalie on a cup winning team". Leafs are too bloated and accepting of failure to ever be proactive as an organization.

They are at the point with Sammy that you have to just play Jones the majority of the time. Get your .895 SV% and 3.20GAA and still win the majority of your games like Seattle did last year.

No love for Mrazek and Dave Rittich

Reality is, there are no good goalies left in the market to go after. Days of Price, Lundviskqt, Luongo, Rask, Miller, Quick all existing at the same time is just gone.

Goalie market is thin as it gets.

They're not going to do anything. They'll probably continue sharing the load between Jones and Samsonov with an edge to Jones until Woll gets back and pray Sammy can pull his head out of his ass in the meantime. I expect them to carry three goaltenders when Woll gets back.

I don't think Sammy will be back after this season but the message coming from the team it seems they want to give him every opportunity to get through this.

It's a shame, but this is the most likely outcome.

I'd do just about anything to get a long term solution in net. Like Askarov from Nashville. But you can't make trades like it's a wish list. Most teams are struggling in goal. That's one of the reasons scoring is up league wide. So trading for a solution would be crazy costly.

A better coach might fix both. The team played brutal in front of both goalies. Fix that, AND the goalie.

It’s strange too because our D by and large since Lou left has been much better than it was when he was here. That’s part of what makes Andersen’s game falling off a cliff so frustrating. As the team improved around him he imploded.

That's a bullet Tre has but as long as this team is sitting at the top of the conference, they won't fire him. Be nice if Tre could see the warts and fire the coach like Lou did that one year when the Devils were near the top but Lou knew thought differently.

That's what happens when you're forced to dumpster dive for a goalie because of mismanaged cap. Andersen was the best of the bunch but couldn't stay healthy. Which lead to trading for Campbell and his league minimum contract. He looked like the guy until he was too far removed from his goalie coaches in LA (who Dubas hired and immediately fired.. because reasons). Mrazek was nothing more than a 1B at best, Murray was a cap dump (imagine that, a supposed contender taking on a lottery team's cap dump... and using him as a starter), and Samsonov was released by a team just as desperate for goaltending as the Leafs. Literally all of them were found by scraping the bottom of the barrel, with the exception of Freddy.

But the real issue is that you could put prime Patty Roy behind this team and still wouldn't fix the compete levels of the $40m in wasted cap space up front

LOL. How could I have missed those two stiffs. Dubas really never passed any tests when it came to goaltending.

As far as the thin goalie market goes, this is why I like teams that have true #1s. Shesterkin, Sirokin, Ullmark/Swayman, Bob??. The other teams have to hope their guy gets hot at the right time. See goalie Bob last year. Failing that, you need a big heavy D that will wear you down and protect your average guy like Vegas has and did last year.

Waive Samsonov, Run Woll Jones till the end of the year. Address D by adding controlled pieces. Sort out in summer!

Incredibly thin, and there are now a lot of teams who need goaltending help.
Low supply and high demand means it will cost you. I doubt he moves Cowan but if push comes to shove he might be willing move a first and Minten to get his dman and goalie.

Woll is out for weeks. Gotta ride this out or see what you have in Hildy before you waive Sammy.

They might already have it in Woll. I'm skeptical myself due to injury history and general lack of availability as a pro but they're going to give him an extended look over the next couple of seasons to show whether he can be the guy or not before they bring in a guy who's going to supplant him as the #1.

Basically, I don't expect any big moves in goal until 2025 off-season at minimum.

Is it really though? Vegas used 5 goalies last year, (6 if you count bloated Lehner on IR) and probably could've won the cup with at least 4 of them in net. All of them were acquired for basically free. Brossoit has looked good back in Winnipeg, and Quick turned back the clock in NY. Both were UFAs.

LA is making due with Talbot of all options. Colorado is making another backup in Georgiev look great.

I think there's a lot of teams horrible at evaluating goaltending, Toronto included. And there's a lot of teams that can make their goalies look better than they are, Toronto not included.

My point is, there's lots of goalie talent available, some of it is still undiscovered in the AHL. But teams need to find them and be willing to take a chance on starting some unknowns
