Man, I do not enjoy Samsonov. Fantasizing over the reverse Patrick Roy where Shanahan comes down and tells him that's his last game as a Leaf in the tunnel.

He is actually very toxic. He brings down the morale of the team, a real energy vampire. Not to mention his piss poor play. He is absolutely awful. I am at the point I don’t even care if we have any cap relief. He has to go.

I was talking about a general sense.

Of course you trust him over Samsonov at this point that goes without saying, but in the grand schem of things you can't be sold on Jones after 6 periods.

Dear sir. Samsonov is done. Goaltending is an issue.

Plenty of other issues, defensive structure is bad, like really bad, but Samsonov was terrible tonight.

At this point, can Hildeby be any worse than Samsonov? Can we bring him up as backup and send Samsonov to the Marlies? You can't be a serious team and continue to trot this sieve out there because he has to figure it out. He ain't figurin' anything out this season.

I don’t think the worry is that Hildeby is going to be worse as much as it being bad for his development if he gets shelled.

But with as bad as Samsonov and Jones are I dont think they have a choice. They have to give it a try. Call up Hildeby, send down Samsonov to see if he can rebuild his game and go from there.

One year deal. Leafs will survive, but maybe Samsonov has a real hard time getting another contract. Too bad for the player-- his performance is killing his career.

Samsonov needs to be waived... at this point, I doubt he'd be claimed, but send him down... I'm not sure who comes up at this point though either... yikes...

Jones has been fine.

Campbell?
Yes, Campbell was mentally worse than Samsonov... hard to believe, yet it's true. Campbell got pulled in his last AHL start.

Campbell's AHL stats...
3.46.88814-6-0

Martin Jones has a .870 save% in the AHL this year and hasn’t had a save% better than .900 in the NHL in 6 years.
He isn’t the answer.

I don't give a damne what he did in the AHL or over the last few years. For the Leafs this year he has been fine. He is not the long-term answer but is serviceable and can likely get them through until Woll returns, and can then be the backup who mentors him.

The difference between Martin Jones and Ilya Samsonov is Jones is beatable and his play is more or less a reflection of what goes on in front of him, which isn't impressive but he's a 3rd stringer who was in the AHL. Whereas Samsonov can singlehandedly lose games for you before you're even in it.

I have no complaints about Jones as a 3rd goalie. He is what he is though. A mediocre guy who for very short stints if you need him won’t hurt you. He was a good signing.
Overall though he isn’t the guy any team should be relying on for more than that at this point in his career.
Is he better than what Samsonov has given us this season? Sure. But that really isn’t a high bar. And if this team has any real aspirations they are going to need someone better than either of them.

We need better. Sure he has had a couple decent games for us. But we have years of available data that tell us what he is. A mediocre sub .900 goalie.
Yes he is better than Samsonov right now. But who wouldn’t be.

I have sometimes not liked Samsonovs attetude in interviews when he has had a bad game. This time he felt crushed for real. And took part of the blame. I hope he got som tricks left , but it didnt look like it.

When a goalie is struggeling like this i would ask the team lean obsessively on D. Block pucks like crazy etc. To show that we got his back. And they turn the D down a few steps when the confidence comes back.

But i still think he is to fragile mentaly, sad if true.
(ok now i got Metallicas " Sad but true" in my head)

Campbell?
Yeah Campbell fell apart on us, but I don't think he ever looked this shot on the Leafs bench. Last night they were showing Samsonov as the players walked past him into the room for the second intermission and I saw the face of a guy who knew his NHL career was probably over. Campbell did that kicked puppy look plenty, but he knew he was still going to be a decent commodity as a free agent.
