Leafs need to address the goaltending.

Like it or not we are stuck with what we got. You have to trade SAMsonov plus just to make room for another goalie. We have to play better defense until one finds their game. The only thing that matters is who gets hot at gm 82 and it could be Woll.

With what cap space?

The Leafs are spending $4.3m on their goaltending tandem.

The only teams spending less are New Jersey ($4.25m fronted by Vanecek), Arizona ($2.5m) and Buffalo ($2.9m).

I don't care how they do it but you have to find a way to do it.

The goaltending has been good twice in 15 games that's not acceptable

The best goalies I can see being available are:

Saros (28) - 5M x 2
Hart (25) - 3.9 x 1
Varlamov (35) - 2.75M x 4
Gibson (30) - 6.4M × 4

For me defence is a team game and the goalie is of a big part of that. but to many times the chemistry between D and goalie seems overlooked. This might take more time with a rookie goalie. i hope Woll got the curage to speak up when D is playing like crap. Or just to communicate in game.

A good D let the goalie only focus on the shooter, rebounds passes etc is mostly cover for by the D. Clear sight no screening of your own goalie etc. This makes a ok goalie realy good.

The TWET or "total weakness expose time" should be at a minimum. Not the case most games.

That doesn't mean you make panic trade threads. I would have thought you'd have learned your lesson on this one by now.

How much longer do you allow them to shit the bed before you do something? How many more points do you let them single handily piss away?

They'd be leading the division with average goaltending, they haven't gotten anywhere near average goaltending.

Our defensive game has not been good actually we have sucked.
Last game was our best game defensively as such the goaltender was great.
Up until then if our goaltenders didn't stand on there head we wouldn't win or the top 4 scoring like crazy we would lose.

McCabe finally came back last game.
Klinkberg finally had a really good game.

Hopefully our defensive game will continue to be better then if our goaltenders suck then something needs to be done

Same verbology as last year, same needless panic. I don’t care about leading the division. Qualify for the playoffs, win. Regular season is just a dress rehearsal. Goaltending isn’t the problem.

Goaltending is absolutely a problem you just deny facts.

League average goaltending is actually exactly what they've gotten. We've gotten -0.2 GSAx on the season.

Samsonov has an 870 save% that's not league average you are lying right now.

Woll's Save% is still above 900

But It's dropping and It's dropping fast, if he keeps going at this right It's going to be under 900 by early December and the only reason it will take that long is because they have huge chunks of time off between now and December 7th.

The Leafs are not getting average goaltending no matter what you say.

It seems to be like you're desperately trying to convince yourself that this is a great team just be held up by shit goaltending.

Goaltending hasn't been good enough. Defense isn't good enough. Pk is shit. Keefe kept Kampf on the 3rd line for too long. Reaves buggered up the 4th line.

I think Brad didn't do as great a job as you thought lol.

I'm sorry that you don't understand how to extrapolate data into something meaningful. Save % is a factor of many things, both team and goalie. -0.2 GSAx suggests we are almost getting league average goaltending. We are second last in the league, in allowing high danger shots, bottom five in allowing medium danger shots. We are second worst in the league combined, in allowing high/medium dangerous shots to our goalies. Only San Jose is worse. Last year we were middle of the pack.

When you are bleeding high danger chances against, it doesn't matter who you put in the net, it isn't going to look good. When you look at the combo of high and medium danger shots you give up, you almost always see the same teams have given up the most, or least goals... Leaders in giving up the least combined high/medium shots against last year... Carolina, Boston, Dallas... all top five.. they just happened to also give up the fewest goals against last year, This is why Boston and Dallas goalies end up with high save percentage...

Bottom four in high danger shots against last year, Ducks, Habs, Hawks and Blue Jackets... also happened to be bottom four in goals against.... see the correlation?

The first thing that needs addressing is team defense. Not really a shock, when the GM brings in a bunch of weak defensive players, replacing defensively strong players.. but hey, great off season right? If we trend back to league average in defense... give league average high and medium danger shots against... things will be fine. But team defense is CLEARLY the problem here.

I didn't know the goaltending would be ECHL caliber when I wrote that thread which it has been, especially in Samsonov's case up until now.

Yes he was good against Vancouver, and Boston, that's 2 out of 15 games, that leaves 13 others, where either he or Woll have played and have been awful in most of them, even games they won.

Case in point Montreal, Minnesota, both Tampa games, and recently against Calgary, Woll won that Calgary game but he also blew a 4-1 lead before doing it, and 2 of those goals were 1000% strictly Woll's fault.

The 1st goal which simply can't go in.

And the 4th happens because Joseph Woll has piss poor rebound control, he's a rebound machine.

Those are just the wins

Vancouver has been the only truly convincing win, It's the only one that didn't require a minimum of 4 goals.

The Leafs are objectively getting league average goaltending. SV% can be very misleading, because all shots are not created equal. That's why we use better, more accurate metrics. While we ideally want better than league average goaltending, the bigger problem has been a massive drop off in our defensive play this year.

Great post! Nice to see some rational analysis when so much of this thread is like this ...

We knew going into the season that they needed to address and evaluate the entire D, top 6 LW, bottom six, goaltending, PK, and coaching.
They have three goalies with some experience, so why not let them play and determine if they need to replace them or mark it off the list.

Nylander is pricing himself out of Toronto with every game he plays (unfortunately). That's where and when the upgrade is going to be made.

I do agree that team defence is a major contributor, though. The number of high-percentage chances that we give up is absurd. The recent injuries haven't helped. See also Klingberg, John.

I think you have it backwards. Paying Nylander is going to be one of the reasons that the Leafs spend less on goaltending. But that is also the right decision. Teams who spend heavy on goaltending are missing the mark.

I don’t see Hart or Varlamov getting moved, both for completely different and obvious reasons. I suppose Gibson at 3.2M might be enticing.

I really want Saros. Nashville has the ability to move him with Askarov knocking on the door and not much as far as talent on that roster. They should be in rebuild right now. He would be expensive though - especially with a few suitors.
