Leafs need to address the goaltending.

Mmmm . . . I think Woll needs to learn to absorb pucks and avoid so many rebounds.

He had amazing moments, but was not great overall. I think he has the quickness, skill and reflexes to do this job -- as well as the right frame of mind -- but he still needs coaching and development.

I think he could eventually be a capable starting goaltender, but probably not more than that.

The Leafs do have something to work with here, and shouldn't jump from the frying pan into the fire.

I'm also interested to see how Dennis Hildeby comes along.

If you want good goalies, you pretty much need to grow your own. The really good ones don't usually get away.

Agreed, defense is a big issue, but goaltending is even worse right now.

You cannot allow 2-3 trash goals a game and expect to win.

No make no mistake I'm not suggesting the defense is perfect.

FAR FAR SO f***ING FAR from it.

However at one point 4 goals against on 20 and it only got 23 by the time OT hit.

23 shots by the time hit? That's reasonable make a save.

In fact It's reasonable that it doesn't get to OT because you were up 4-1.

Thefact that it even got to OT is Woll's fault and not in a good way.

You went from praising this team all summer to now hammering them at every turn. Let the team play 30 games and then see where they are. I think you will be singing a very different tune at that point.

@LEAFANFORLIFE23 - What are your thoughts on the second Flames goal where Rielly screened him, and the third one that was a high tip of a shot going wide?

I thought he didn't have a whole heck of a chance on either one. Did you?

The first goal was stoppable, and the last one was off a rebound that he needs to learn to control.

Regarding the season as a whole, I'm essentially split on both the team D and goaltending having to improve if this team wishes to succeed.

He battled and didn't sag, even though he didn't really have his A game all night. Sometimes you have to look at the W instead of save %.

Yes and I still believe the vast majority of the things I said about this team.

I didn't know the goaltending would be ECHL caliber

"On that goal, the puck went in. That's on Woll. He should stop it. You could have 8 players standing in his field of vision, but in the end, he's the goaltender and he should still find a way to stop that shot, even if he can't see it, cause he is the goaltender, and he should stop it. In that specific instance you are describing, Woll's save percentage was .000. That is an unacceptable level of goaltending."

So goal #1 he's got to have, simple as that, In think we both agree on that, I think most people agree on that.

Goal #2 I'm split on because yes he's screened, it's also not a great angle I'd like that not to go in but he is screened.

Goal #3 is a perfect tip, nothing he can do.

Goal 4, he's a rebound machine and his lack of ability to hold rebounds caused that, that's got to be fixed

2 of the 4 goals, I have a big problem with those being goal 1, and goal 4.

And that's the point of this thread, no matter who is in net there is always AT LEAST one, and most times 2 or more where you go "that can't go in."

Tonight it was Woll and they won despite that but make no mistake Samsonov is no different, in fact he's worse.

I think Woll and even Sammy are goalies that needs to be busy, the more shots they face, they more dial in they are.

At the time I write this they are up 4-3 after 2 against Calgary.

3 goals on 19 shots that's not even an 850 performance from their goaltender.

That's been a consistent problem for Samsonov all year, and now It's become a consistent problem for Woll that's a fact and even if they win tonight that fact won't change.

A lot of people crowned Joseph Woll as the guy because he had some great games over his first and that's great when he's playing 5 or 6 games a season, now he's playing more and he's shitting the bed consistently.

Somebody is going to respond "defense" and no.

The defense is a work in progress and we all know it but when you are getting 850 or less consistently the defense is off the hook.

850 is not and NEVER will be a defense problem that 1000% strictly a goalie issue and It's time it gets addressed.

Thank you for this thread. When you posted this last year out goalies went on a tear.

I like Woll a lot! Maybe he's the future, maybe he's not but this thread is garbage and most of the nonsense in here belongs in the overreactions thread.

Samsonov 2 goals against 10 shots 800 save% another piss poor performance from him So far again.

Our goaltending has sucked all season.

Sammy has been bad, but people bitching about Woll need to give their head a shake.

He's been bad the last few games too.

5 against Buffalo, not counting the empty Netter because he wasn't on the ice for that.

4 last night

6 against Ottawa

Woll has been awful for a while now, in fact the goaltending in general has all season.

Don't be an ass kisser that can't admit facts.

You are better than that.

When the Leafs were built some corner had to be cut. They saw other teams win cups with average goaltending. Who do you trade for and at what price? The Leafs have ignored the backend for years. They have a new time proven formula to win cups. Score 6 goals every game. What could go wrong?!

But I'm not asking for Vezina caliber goaltending, I'm asking for average, and 2 games aside one against Boston, and then last night against Vancouver we haven't gotten anywhere close to average goaltending.

With what cap space?

The Leafs are spending $4.3m on their goaltending tandem.

The only teams spending less are New Jersey ($4.25m fronted by Vanecek), Arizona ($2.5m) and Buffalo ($2.9m).

Woll they're going to keep. He's got too much upside and is locked up for a great deal.

Sammy who knows. He's probably gone after this year but I suspect his numbers will level out at some point.
