The reason the Leafs have been losing in the playoffs is they haven't scored enough goals.

Florida - Scored 10 goals in 5 games
Tampa - Offense as a whole was was fine because of a couple blowouts
Montreal - Scored 6 goals total in Game 5, 6, 7
Columbus - Got shutout twice, (and went 56 minutes in another)
Boston - Scored 5 goals total in Games 5, 6, 7
Boston - Only series where offence was good, where the D let them down
Washington - Lost 2 - 1 in OT in games 5 & 6

Trading Nylander for a high end top 3 Dman would good for the Leafs on multiple levels.

If you can get that Dman re-signed/signed for equal or less than Nylander makes now its a home run move.
Then he gets hurt and you back at square one.

The Islanders' defense is highly overrated. Most were a product of Trotz's coaching. Dobson might turn into something useful, but not for Nylander. I think it's mostly irrelevant anyway, because Treliving is clearly not going to trade Nylander.
Islanders finished 5th in GA last year without Trotz and the team wasnt playoff caliber. They're an established school of defence, I wouldn't have concerns taking one of the students and they're not that expensive either.

I don't expect Willy to be traded but there are rumors they are gauging the market and that's probably true. Not sure how else we would land a stud D, so really just for conversation.

I'd be hesitant to draw conclusions from this otherwise we are just building on the last program, which was fundamentally flawed.

If you look at our roster you can't conclude that our weakness is on offense and that the solution is to get more guns. Either replace forwards or deploy them differently, but to just keep adding would be a continuation of shooting from the hip and exacerbating our imbalance.

We do need a stronger defensive corps.

Islanders have Sorokin and a full set of great Dmen and one on the way. It would be a shame to break it up but if they can add forty goals they should probably take it, even if just for the fans. They're so short on goals even losing Eberle hurt.

Willy and a playmaker like Barzal on L1 they might really get their monies worth.
I was on my phone at a ball game and read your post as NYR, Islanders could really use a Nylander type player.

Not the only but the biggest reason that i want Nylander to sign now is all the speculation during the season.

If we would trade Nylander for a D, the pressure would be even greater on Marner. That is not what he or leaf needs.

We should be able get a stay at home booooring but effective D in other ways.

We aren’t winning a cup without an upgraded D, every former player I hear or read seems to understand that. If anything it’s degraded relative to last year. So we can resign Willie and still not win a cup or we can explore trading him, because he’s the kind of piece that can upgrade our glaring need.

Seth Jones is a interesting case.

I like what this Blackhawks fan said earlier this year.

It is so rare that you get a chance to get a stud #1 D

Pietrangelo was probably the last crack at one and who knows when one becomes available again.

Realistically, your best bet is to grab at least 4 #2-4 type defenseman and do it by committee and if one becomes available, swing then.

I think it is a logical idea to trade one of Marner or Nylander for a defenseman. I think it is more likely that it will be Nylander being the one traded.

Yes, it is true that we didn't score in the playoffs but if Matthews is getting $13+ million and Marner is getting similar, the onus is on them to produce and get their teammates going.

I think the Leafs are a better team trading Nylander for a top 3 defenseman.

As an example, trading Nylander for Werenski is a lateral move cap wise but at least it shifts the money to defense.

Bertuzzi-Matthews-Domi
Knies-Tavares-Marner
Robertson-Kampf-Jarnkrok
Lafferty-Holmberg-Reaves

Rielly-Werenski
Brodie-Klinberg
McCabe-Lilly
Gio-Timmins

Yes, it's more likely that Nylander gets traded, if only because he is the only one who can be, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's right. If your main issue is scoring in the playoffs, then Nylander produced more when the games got tougher/more important.

Don't know which one of the two would best to move but it is clear to me Leafs favour moving Willie.

Previous management certainly did, as evinced by their giving Mitch a full NMC, while giving Willy only a limited NMC.

Hopefully the new management has a better mindset, as evinced by their claiming they want to keep Willy.

Some of you people must have had a lot more fun watching the Leafs average 2 goals per game to lose against the Panthers than I did. I can't imagine why anyone would want to make the offense even worse
Exactly. We had like 6 straight games of only 2 goals vs TB/FLA. We need skilled forwards who continue to produce and play their game when the games get tough in the playoffs. Nylander does. Hoping Bertuzzi and Domi can add to that. Matthews and Marner play scared especially in elimination games. JT is just plain slow and ineffective.

When was the last time a first line winger on an expiring contract returned a stud D man in a trade?

Because the suggestion that it's Nylander or that kind of D man seems to be a false dichotomy if ive ever seen one....

As most others have said, this was, is, and always will be Nylander. If the Leafs choose not to go down that path, and I live me some Willy (hmm, I mean William) so be it, but then the critical piece that everyone feels is be missing will remain missing.

This is one of those moves you probably do not want to make, but you have to make to take the next step... waiting around for 7 years to make it seems a bit much if you ask me since it has been fairly obvious for a few years now.

We dont need D we just need Matthews/Marner/Nylander/Tavares to score goals in elimination games instead of getting shutout.

Considering that there is only one player on the team who can be traded and who could bring back a "stud D", this is nothing but a thinly disguised "let's trade Nylander" thread.

Willie won't be traded to a team he won't extend with similar to PLD and MT. Will be interesting what Tre gets for him if he is dealt. Needs to find a GM that is infatuated with Willie.

I haven’t read this whole thread, but here are my 2 cents.

I personally don’t believe it has to be 1 stud Dman. Too many challenges with this approach to even list.

However, I do think an overall upgrade and style change is needed on the backend. Tanev, Zadorov and Andersson in Calgary would be great (as an example of what I mean).

Toughness in the backend is the missing piece.

Nylander and another small add could probably get a convo going.
