If this is a 2 year deal, it's great.

If it's a 3 year deal, it's good to ok.

If it's a 4 year deal, it's maybe not the best, but tolerable.

Anything beyond that I suspect is soemthing they're going to regret.... and honestly, wouldn't make sense. If you're going to lock him up to a deal that takes him to 38-39, why not lock him up to 41 with some backdiving / LTIR years??

That being said assuming this comes to fruition... will be interesting to see what the Leafs do with the $8m in space remaining.

How many D do you think hold up in their mid 30s?

Tyler Myers from what would have been tanev’s draft year in 2008 got 3x3.

Figure with Tanev he’d push for 4 years. Yesterday it was going at like 6 years at $4 mill per.

Tanev is worth the AAV

but if he gets 4 or higher AAV, his agent deserves the noble peace prize

The mileage and style of play just wont work

So you would take a deal that blatantly circumvents the cap.
Wouldn't you? It's within the rules, the leafs have to use the advantage of infinite money. Signing bonuses are fine in the cba, do a 15% drop-off each year in salary and it's legit(ish).

It's not within the rules, the last year of the contract can't pay less than 50% of the highest paying year.

It’s really not as big a deal as some of y’all are acting - if Tanev is healthy, he’s super valuable.

If he’s not, he goes on LtIR.

But he’s not gonna just suck.
He generally plays through his injuries though. I like the player for Toronto, but the contract has to make sense.

It’s not within the rules, but sure.
If he expressly says that his intent is to retire, sure. It's collusion and circumventing. Anyone that has watched tanev play is probably confident in seeing he might have 2-3 years left if he wants a quality of life after hockey. What's the difference if he's at 5 and ends up on ltir for 2 years (Ala muzzin) vs my suggestion? Sad to say, but if he does break down, the ltir relief better at 5m for the leafs anyways.

You can't front load anymore, the most you can do is a 50% drop, if he retires early he's leaving 3m+ on the table per year at least.

uh huh, I am aware. You set the signing bonuses higher in the front end and scale up yearly salary each year to cover the gap. The leafs literally have the Tavares contract that does that NOW.

Brad is living up to his reputation -- overpaying on both term and dollar to unrestricted free agents.
