It's even more funny when you look at how bad our first round picks were. In ten years, he hit with Caufield. Thats it. (Maybe Mailloux. We shall see)
And Guhle. Things is, all his best picks came when Timmins was AGM and exclusively in charge of the drafts. We even see Timmins denying Bergevin a trade when they were about to draft Cole.

He exists and existed in a time when the Canadian dollar was horrible and the team had to trade anything that cost them money.

Bergevin could spend to the cap and had total control over his moves, and did his damage for nearly a decade.

Bergevin edges out Houle for those reasons.
Worst GM at the worst time.

He inherited a great young team and promptly broke it. f***ing horrible.

Houle took over a team in decline and was a puppet.

MB was also GM at a time when so many old school GMs went from being solid managers (pre-2015: Lombardi, MB, Chia-pet etc) to overnight suckage as the NHL game shifted to speed & skill just as McDavid entered the league & moreover driven by NHL owners scrambling to not lose their shirts in court over concussion lawsuits.

MB simply got caught in that transformation of the league and wasn’t the right person at the right time

He hired Therrien day one. He turned down Jagr… he just sucked.

Because he's a f***ing idiot.. he also said he was proud of the draft picks he left us.. bro they would have all busted if you stayed, no one survived his terrible development.
Guhle, Caufield, Harris, Struble, Mailloux, Tuch, Romanov, Evans, Lekhonen, Xhekaj

I disagree with your assertion that those were solid moves. They were terrible. If you want to say it has nothing to do with his daughter’s passing - so be it. But Gomez was terrible and so was Gionta. He let everyone walk for no return… made no sense whatsoever.

Getting Cammaleri was good. Everything else was him going off the deep end.

The Gomez trade sucked but Gionta was 100% was a solid player for years for us and was captain. Was a good playoff player as well. There was nothing terrible about the signing. Hamrlik was borderline genius. Total stud.

Nobody got sold the year before because they were trying to compete but they got injured and swept. It wasn't ideal but nothing out of this realm. Only Koivu remained productive anyways.

Gainey was an average to above-average GM and the results during this tenure reflected that. Nothing more, nothing less.

I'm sure Gainey losing his daughter was extremely difficult for him but I find it a bit distasteful to associate it with his hockey work. No one knows if that's the case, there's nothing to suggest it and plenty of people are able to continue doing good, productive work after the loss of a loved one. Let's not place meaning where we're not sure it belongs.

Which he would have busted if he stayed. He hadn't shown the ability to develop anyone.
So Suzuki & Caufield busted during Cup run? How about Evans?

The hard part starts now.
Yup - and Gorton has never been past this situation before, never took a team to the next level - he was ousted in Bos & NYR at this juncture.

Why did Jacobs not see Gorton as being fit enough to remove his interim title and make him GM? We know why Dolan wanted him gone..

We will find out soon enough…

Feel good thread, the guy been gone for 3 years let it go.

We cant talk about a guy we didn't pick in the draft beceause ''he's not part of the habs'' but let's bash on someone who isn't here since november 2021.

The whole turnover was wrongheaded. It was a perfect time to rebuild. We already had a cupboard full of younger players and he went out and got a bunch of mediocre players who were never going to take us anywhere. If we'd spent that time collecting high picks we could've been incredible in the 2010s.

We had vets we could've just re-signed another year and then traded at the end to help acclerate things. Instead he gets these over the hill guys and signs them to long term deals. Zero sense whatsoever.

It was in the early days of July.. complete insanity.
Gainey went all in on: Gionta, Camalleri and Gomez.. all small players. In other words, the only players available.

When are Habs fans going to learn: small players dont win championships. They never do.. they are only an accessory piece to a championship club
Famed accessory pieces Patrick Kane and Nikita Kucherov

Yeah, sure, but I think we all know that ownership would have never greenlit at this point.

NY and Boston we're infinitely improved by the time he was done there. No matter what happens going forward, he's put us on solid footing going forward. Dealing away vets for picks and prospects has paid off big time for us. He's drafted top five three years in a row and we've got a stockpile of good young talent now.

Best crop of young talent since at least the mid 80s early 90s. We may not have a Price or even a Subban coming up... but we've got a deep group of really good players.

Again, I don't disagree.

But what are people expecting? Him to say he was awful and doesn't deserve to have been GM of this franchise or in the NHL again?

it was a pretty fluffy article, certainly not worth the anger posts i'm reading in this thread lol

You really can't fathom why?

The architect of doom spoke for the first time in 3 years and pats himself on the back for a job well done the whole way. Seems like an easy target to vent frustrations. At least it's not one of our players for once.

It has nothing to do with humility. 90% of this board has trash takes and I don't recall many ever going 'WOW, I'M SUCH A TRASHCAN OF A POSTER' either and I wouldn't chalk that up to arrogance.
Sounds like he may be your uncle.....
I have seen many many posters at least admit they are wrong.

Bergevin rode the guts out of hall of fame goalie end of story. Anyone, literally anyone could have done what he did. he should not be arrogant.....he is a clown.

There is a reason, he has not been rehired. He can't admit his faults. He was paid to do a job, and his claim to fame is CP31.

Posters on HF are not paid, to admit they can post trash....and again even though many admit to being wrong at times.

Bergevin says Habs owner Geoff Molson approached him with a contract extension right after the team reached the ’21 Cup Final. His contract was expiring a year later.

“I decided that for me, it was best to move forward,” Bergevin said. “Time had come. It was good for both of us to move in a different direction. Geoff was very good, very fair. But I told him, ‘Geoff, I’m going to finish my last year that’s left and then I’m going to move on.’ He was good with that. He understood.”

Carolina GM Don Waddell did reach out to see if a trade could be worked out instead. The rumor at the time was that Bergevin tried to get a young Seth Jarvis back.

“That’s true,” he confirmed.

I love how they brought up Seth Jarvis as if MB was a genius for asking... while Carolina promptly rejected.

Forgot Guhle. That's a good point. So, he was going to trade the pick used for Caufield?

Also, we may have a Price (Fowler) and a Subban (Reinbacher) - and we certainly have a Demidov and a Hage!
