Post-Game Talk: Leafs lose. Thornton on the first PP unit. Weak. Nice work keefe. Do better.

All the Sandin bandwagoners wanting Sandin to play more make me laugh. Sure, the kid is good but he's a rookie. He got totally exposed tonight.

Dermott should be in the lineup next game without a doubt.

The main thing is obviously Tavares' health. Here's hoping we get an update soon and it will be positive.

As for the team itself... yeah. You can second guess what happened with Thornton (who shouldn't be anywhere near the PP, first or second unit), but the fact is, the effort was just not good enough. We allowed Montreal to impose their style of play onto the game. Too many mistakes in general (three delay of game penalties. Really?).

The only silver lining of this really awful night: despite the atrocious effort, we lost by a single goal. Montreal is still shit. We are still the best team in Canada, and with that, have a path to the conference finals. It is only there where Tavares' absence can begin to be an excuse for losing (because while it does blow up our C depth, which is going to hurt us against a deep team, the Habs are not a deep team).

Re-calibrate. Bring in Engvall and Galchenyuk, please. We'll be fine... I hope.

Was Sandin skating on quick sand because he was anything but quick on that play or is Paul Byron really THAT fast? To me it looked like the former

Well, Sandin stopped skating about 1-2 strides (Byron's strides) before diving for the puck...it's really hard to be fast when you stop skating.

That goal was more on Matthews and Thornton. Also on whoever the power play coach is.

I could see this coming from a mile away. I feared this game all week, just had that feeling knowing the Leafs. Watching these playoffs underscores the underdogs, especially the first game. The Peg proved that last night as well. This team can't score in the playoffs. Their setups are not good, need to attack with speed, too much non movement. This is no surprise to me, just didn't have confidence going into this one.
Where are all the blowhards that were clamoring for the Habs and Price. Well you got them!!! Karma.
They still lack the compete that is required, this game was over when the Habs scored first (at least in my eyes). We did not look good at all, I can't emphasize this enough. Embarrassing but not surprising, Columbus all over again.
Get well soon John, such a leafy thing to happen.

It’s easier to lay into the fringe players than to get tough on the fan favorites who absolutely didn’t bring it.

Price is fantastic. I don’t really see a huge issue with our top players tonight. Couple of rushes where we hesitated but other than that I thought we had some good chances that couldn’t be cashed in on.

The issue with guys like Thornton is when they provide nothing offensively and in conjunction become a liability.

Keefe leaving his skilled players out on the ice for nearly the last 4 minutes was not a smart coaching move..

Those players had no legs left in the final minute to make any last push.
Ya I was wondering about that... got to give them some sort of breather.... just seemed like desperate coaching

We got Simmonds for the playoffs apparently and he was the most invisible guy on the ice tonight.

All this while we have Galchenyuk, Brooks, Engvall and Robertson chomping at the bit for a spot on the team.
Lets be honest, this grit movement made us worse. Skill helps you score, not grit.

On the positive side, I know we can play better, that was probably the best Montreal can play. So there is that.

Next game Saturday night.

They do tend to alternate between stinker and perfect games. But after that perfect game there’s a good chance you get another unusual stinker.

Really poor game. Simmonds didn’t hit. Spezza two penalties. Thornton awful. Sandin pathetic. Foligno Nash nonexistent. Marner indifferent all night. 3 pucks over the glass? Shorthanded goal? No power play goals? Tavares injured. Did KerfootMikayev play? Easily their worst possible game. Only one word comes to mind...CHOKE job. But, it’s only one game.

Price makes one difficult save and all we will here will be vIntAgE price F*** off
Please please please please please win this series just so I don’t have to hear my own brother yell CAREY PRICE PLAYOFF MONSTER or VINTAGE CAREY PRICE something ridiculous like that. He’s a leafs fan btw

A few hot takes:
- The Leafs have to have the worse ice in the league. How do they not pay their way out of this problem? They fell on so many opportunities.
- Surprise, the PP cost them the game. We all knew it would happen. They just left the dumpster on fire.
