One could argue that between the fancy advanced stats and traditional stats, that the following fits under that description:

Total team goals - 3
Total team goals against - 7
Total even strength goals against - 3.

Combined, the 2 players had:

0 goals, 5 assists, 5 points, 7 hits, 4 blocked shots, 4 takeaways, +2, 86% expected goals for at even strength and limiting their direct opposition consisting of the guy who scored 51 goals this season to an expected goals % of 15%.

Could they do better?

Yes.

Were they in any way responsible for losing this game?

Not in the slightest.

I don’t blame them for the loss but this thought process doesn’t feel satisfying to me either.

Please put Nylander with Mathews. You can load it up with Marner, or keep Calle there but Nylander really is wasted playing a slow game with JT. When Mathews and Nylander are playing Willy is the trigger man (and scores goals). I'm tired and losing series after series riding with Mathews and Marner together. Try something different Keefe (like sitting Holl).
I don't mind Marner with Matthews, but JT is just wrong with Nylander. Play Willy with ROR and anyone with speed (like Knies), and drop JT to the third line.

Between, the shit performance, the empty seats and ridiculous prices, anyone else feel like a first round loss may have lasting impact this time around?

I don’t think so. We have an upper echelon team with star power that gives us a rough April every year.

Doesn't matter what line you put JT on, he has to be with two defensive studs because Keefe has no clue how to match lines. I'm not really sure what he does now that I think about it

I like it.

JT is a liability but he could be deadly on the third line.

Matthews again, a no show, doesnt give a bleep. I dont care if this over paid diva is traded in the summer. Matthews just spits on the bench as the Leafs choke, 6-3 220lb refuses to hit anyone, to make any sort of impact.

No.

If the idea is to win a cup, they will have to do much more than the fancy stats.
They will need to play more and play better.

Great post. Hockey isn't basketball where you can win it yourself. If your goalie is letting up 7, your team has 7 penalties (including a major), and your defense and bottom-6 were useless, what else can you ask out of your two best players besides being in on all the GF and not being on for one against.

People are so sour on their past performances they can't appreciate the fact they played well despite the game being a awful.

Horseshit fixed game. Bunting's hit will distract from the ridiculous calls against Schenn and Kampf to keep the game out of reach. We need to start on time, sure, but this needs to stop.

Bunting will be suspended 2 games and Cernak will start game 2, bank that.

I'd start Woll and Knies and hope the kids give us a boost and a good story after this horrible display from the league and a few of our regulars.
Agree with most of your post. It's no time to panic, I actually am not that angry. Cernak will play 1000000 Percent. The league will give the Leafs the token first round suspension because we are ohhhhh sooooooo dirty.

The most predictable thing in the game was after we are getting after them in the second period and score 2 quick ones on the PP the refs give weak PP against. We all knew it was coming... my question is why? Why do games have to be refed like this? My group all said after the 2 nd PP goal by us, "We'll get one in the next 5 minutes". It's a joke, happens every year. I'm not saying we would have won but it definitely f'd our mojo at a critical time of the game.

As soon as I saw Wes McCauley as the ref I immediately bet Tampa by 2 in the game. He has something for Leafs. Like I said before that wasn't the difference, we started horribly and Samsonov was awful (I'm a supporter),

Reverse jinx in effect this year. Let's rock Thursday! Toss Simmonds (5 insane minutes lol) and Knies in ZAR can sit one and maybe Lilly in for Holl. Won't happen, but I can always dream.

See ya Thursday, keep your heads up.

Not actually feeling that bad about it. Laid an egg in the first, liked the game the rest of the way. Nice and physical, showed some resilience in the second, phantom call on Schenn killed it and whatever from there. I am not worried yet. Won 5-0 last year in game 1, hey, lets try it the other way around. I expect the Leaf to win game 2 and take momentum in to TB. Lets go.

No one fool themselves, it's Samsonov back in for next game, it's his net for the playoffs. Bunting suspended 1 I'd guess and I'll take it, no wish to ever see anyhow hurt but that boat has sailed and now you take the tradeoff, hello Knies. Wonder about Hedman.

Burn the tape and move on. We saw last year tampa lost 5-0 and still won. I just hope the leafs forget about this and move on.

He has like 60 hits in his last 15 playoff games
