Between, the shit performance, the empty seats and ridiculous prices, anyone else feel like a first round loss may have lasting impact this time around?

Again, they were good, and primarily matched up against Tampa's top line, who had an xG of 11.2% based on Moneypuck. They weren't completely dominant, but what else do you want from your two best players besides being positive in their chance shares, and scoring 3 and 2 points on 3 total goals. Saying they "weren't terrible" is putting it so mildly its disingenuous. They weren't on for a 5v5 goal, and Matthews only played 17 minutes because of all the penalties.

Of all the issues this team had today, I'd put Marner, Matthews, and Nylander at the very bottom with the Brodie-McCabe pairing.

After all these years? I want real, actual domination from them.

Bunting is a moron. Just like Kadri, why do our pests always take it to far and hurt the team. He's probably gone for the next game so Knies will get his chance. Interested to see if Liljegren draws in as well.

I think it will. And rightly so.

They are very corporate tax break dependent. I dunno about other companies, ours essentially ended partnerships. The company I work for was one of the NHLs biggest sponsors and has a NHL building with their name on it in America. The Canada division in Toronto has very deep ties to TML and was honestly I’d say quite a big client.

Let’s take a look lol

2018: 7-2 loss to Boston, about as bad as this

2019: 4-1 win against Boston, about as good as last year

2020: 2-0 loss against Columbus, not as bad as today

2021: 2-1 loss to Montreal, not as bad as Columbus, due to JT injury

At the end of the day game 1 is just that, the first game, but it is much nicer to win as it’s the whole point of home ice

Oh boy - in my anger, I was looking at Game 7s, not Game 1s.

Looking at Leafs Game 7s obviously not a pretty picture.

Still - this team does have trouble showing up on time - the first ~7 minutes of this one really cost them.

Maybe the first time as a fan I witnessed Toronto losing a series in one period. They will never get out from under this.

Defense
Goaltending
Forward Lines

All in disarray now...

They had difficulty creating energy tonight. An area that has haunted the Leafs for over 10 years. People blame the crowd, but they reacted very appropriately to when the Leafs played well tonight.

First time I’ve seen shear disappointment in the fans and that type of “it feels different this time” reactions.

One could argue that between the fancy advanced stats and traditional stats, that the following fits under that description:

Total team goals - 3
Total team goals against - 7
Total even strength goals against - 3.

Combined, the 2 players had:

0 goals, 5 assists, 5 points, 7 hits, 4 blocked shots, 4 takeaways, +2, 86% expected goals for at even strength and limiting their direct opposition consisting of the guy who scored 51 goals this season to an expected goals % of 15%.

Could they do better?

Yes.

Were they in any way responsible for losing this game?

Not in the slightest.

Doesn't the line of Bunting-Matthews-Nylander have some gawdy GF/GA split in like the largest sample size of any line this season?

I didn’t like the Brodie penalty but he definitely wrapped his arm around the guy and it was a soft playoff penalty but certainly a penalty nonetheless. After that they were down 3-0 after one. After that they started to come back but got f***ed by terrible reffing. However, not until they were down 7-2 did they actually get that third goal to even match what they needed after one period.
Gotta ignore the moron McCauley and just focus on period one. The refs didn’t cost the leafs this game; the leafs never had the lead or even a tie beyond the 0-0 to start the game.
It was certainly a penalty, but those often get ignored away from the play. The problem was that he grabbed a player heading towards the puck and the net, and the grab clearly affected a probable scoring chance - that gets called.

Other than that, they got f***ed by stupid plays much more than by the officiating.
