At least I got to meet with Ray Ferraro, Chris Johnston, Bryan Hayes and Joe Bowen tonight.

They were all super nice and friendly, especially Joe. What a nice guy. Hearing that laugh in person was such a cool moment.

Brian Burke was also in the building but I got to be honest I was afraid to introduce myself to him lol.

You should've asked him if our truculence was up to par

Weird to me people keep ripping on Matthews and Marner. They were fine. Obviously we want more from them, but they were dominant at times, and really weren't an issue. I imagine theyll look better with more consistent ice time. On the other hand, the entire defense has looked like complete dogshit, faltering the moment they've seen a semblance of pressure, giving away the puck like crazy. Giordano and Holl were especially bad, and I don't think Schenn playing is wise even if his numbers were fine. Not to mention the entire bottom-6 basically did nothing positive all game. I'll give Sammy a pass because most of the goals weren't overly bad besides the Point one at 0.1, but we need some saves if we want to win the series, and he needs to be better.

Not singling out this post, but this sentiment makes me a little sad. Matthews and Marner were not terrible, but the stage has been set for them to take over a series and go full throttle for a long time now and we've been waiting a full calendar year for their next big chance and they were ok. Is that enough?

Can't disagree with the rest of your comments, though.

Sports radio is going to be elite tomorrow.

Team needs to be better plain and simple. No line tinkering or inserting 3GP Knies or Lilly over Holl will change that fact. If we play like we can we win. Everyone played like trash.

HM to McCabe for maybe being the piece of trash not yet in the trash can that game.

I disagree that they were "ok".

The 2 players were on the ice for all 3 goals for.
They played 13 minutes of even strength all night long.
Matthews wasn't on the ice for a goal against and I don't remember if Marner was on for more than 1 on the power play.

Matthews and Marner were by a huge margin the 2 best even strength players on the ice tonight by whatever stats Moneypuck tracks.

It does follow what I saw as well - that line was almost always much better than the opposing line while on the ice.

Generally speaking, if you have a line of players who are that dominant at even strength, you should play them more at even strength.

The only three positives I'll take out of this:
1. Tampa's top line was complete, utter dogshit at 5v5, and they won't be getting that much PP time the rest of the series combined.
2. We'll have different refs next game.
3. William Nylander is really good at playoff hockey, and he showed up again.
IMO Marner had a bad game despite what fancy stats may say. He struggled to make clean passes that connected and often folded under pressure with poor passes or unnecessary fancy plays that quickly came back the other way. I'm a stats guy but I find the playoffs are a different beast where the interference and pace ramps up and the underlying numbers decouple from the live events happening on the ice.

Wha ?
