Credit to AM34. Say what you want about Matthews' offense tonight, he's the only star whose shown a willingness to leave his comfort zone and battle. He's shown more bite in 2 games than some of the other stars (excluding JT) have displayed in 4 years.

That's absolutely no exaggeration.
I thought Matthews might have had one of the worst games in his nearly 5 years here, the puck was bouncing all over his stick tonight, but I agree it was good to see him get involved at the end. No one should be happy with that effort.

One positive thing I have observed is that our PP is MUCH more fluid than in past years with less guys staying stationary... I think that will lead to a lot more consistent success on the PP.

We still probably need to switch up the groupings and we're always a pretty good PP team, but we usually arent consistently good and I think a big reason for that was that we didnt move around a lot and tried the the same plays all the time... Im liking the look of it so far and think it looks much more promising.

Keefe has to stop splitting his talents the PP units. That second unit should be getting 30 seconds of every almost every PP.

I remember when we got a 1st powerplay, they had a tv timeout and Keefe, god knows f***ing why, decides to put his 2nd unit on who ate up over half the 2 minutes. Stop over coaching. Put your 4 best forwards and Rielly out there if they are rested. Stop this Thornton-Simmonds experiment. They want a front net presence but JT is usually the in front of the net anyways so it makes no sense.

I thought they'd be fixing their PP system or move Nylander on that half and Marner down at the line but they've instead diluted their top unit for no reason. Keefe is starting to over coach. Or maybe it's to not wear guys out, but whatever the reason it's not working on the PP.

If you want to say hew overpaid fine, but the reality is he overpaid 1-2 million max on Marner/Matthews/Nylander Nylander's contract is actually great and probably making 1 million under what he's worth. So could Dubas have salvaged a couple million? Sure and I'm not saying that's completely insignificant, but it isn't a huge issue or backbreaking to overpay good players a little.

At least we're not overpaying bad players who are non-factors into our success.

Dubas announced that it's the new reality of salaries after signing Marner and then not a single other GM overpaid like him.

He was given so much to work with and has steadily produced worse results. It will take time for him to completely ruin it but it's well on its way.

Will over skill.

Determination prevails. A lot of standard hockey talk, but it doesn't have to be rocket science.

Will Over Skill lesson should have sunk in by now after embarassment in the 1st round against boston, last season's slap on the face against zamboni driver, against CBJ and against other teams

but.....

Leafs need more grit. The draft was great, and draft for skill, but you need to gain physical players elsewhere. We haven’t.

The best leafs team to watch in the past 10 years is still the team in the shortneded season that cracked the playoff drought. It was built on toughness. This team is hit or miss. If they’re offence is down, they don’t have any other layers

Matthews is a guy who really wants to win. One of those guys who will become a lethal, 200 foot player, as Sundin became.

It's early. Revenge should be on their minds for tomorrow.

Tough to outright drop the first game of the back-to-back. Too many goals against here. Have to hope Campbell can help steer things back in the right direction tomorrow night. Going to need more than just the goalie switch to have a better fate though. I imagine the pressure after a loss mounts a bit more in a 56 game season playing exclusively against teams within the division.

the second unit has been better than the first unit. They scored 4 times already.

I agree more grit is required. What I'd like to see is the permanent inclusion of Adam Brooks on the fourth line whilst acquiring Los Angeles speedster austin Wagner, who Brooks had chemistry with in junior.

I'll start crediting him when he gets back to doing what he's paid for as the 2nd highest paid player in hockey (tied with Panarin)... Scoring goals. That's his job on this team.

McDavid (the only player paid more than Auston) has 4 points through 2 games, including a hat trick. Matthews has a single assist. Obviously that will change, but when you're paid like he is, the scrutiny is warranted. He has to produce like Superman, because he's paid like it.

Let’s look at the bright side...Marner is buying a Karaoke machine for the boys road trips. He said he wants to add more songs to his arsenal. Atta boy Mitchy! Once the boys gets a few karaokes in them.. the grit and toughness will really rise to the top.

Must be nice to be able to not give a crap in terms of effort and still be paid like you’re the best ER surgeon in the world...fck their kareoke seriously...this is your JOB not just a game you play...and no doubt they all kill me on the ice no questions asked but guys you’re competing with literally the best in the world what makes you think you can half ass anything and get away with it

We were sloppy again which is a trend. Granted it's the second game but it's not looking like an improved team right now.

I disagree with the Matthews assessment. Looks like he's feeling snakebit from not getting a goal early and feeling good about his game so his defensive detail just went to crap.

Thornton is not the right fit on that line. Marner is guilty enough of making those extra little passes, the last thing we need is a big old slow winger who is a step behind and also makes extra little random soft touch passes.

Tavares looked good. He has a lot more of his foot speed back and was grinding and using his lower body in battles quite effectively.
