Credit to AM34. Say what you want about Matthews' offense tonight, he's the only star whose shown a willingness to leave his comfort zone and battle. He's shown more bite in 2 games than some of the other stars (excluding JT) have displayed in 4 years.

That's absolutely no exaggeration.

Andersen clearly deserves the lion's share of the blame since the Leafs were dominating until he decided to let every shot past him, but it's not all on him. The Leafs are absolutely good enough to come back against a team like ottawa and just gave up
Agreed on this. The team as whole did show an abysmal effort after Andersen caved in, but we didn't get NHL level goaltending tonight.

How can we get our hands on a Tkatchuk? More grit in their earlobes then all of the leafs players.

You can't get him. You have to draft those guys and at 6'4, 215lbs, he's the type of forward that half our fan base (at least on this board) would turn their nose up at because there would likely be a more skilled player on the board at #4 overall, with half that kid's intangibles and contributions to winning, playoff style hockey. He and his brother, who Toronto will see nearly 20 times this year, are complete gems, but not "Toronto's type".

I'm sorry if this will come across as too critical however let me begin asking as to why Joe Thornton is on the Toronto Maple Leafs? Let me be more specific, how does joe Thornton have a job in the NHL when the likes of Corey Perry and Morgan Frost have difficulty cracking the every day lineup. I'll be frank, and I'm a moderate Leaf fan but I'd rather have a two years past his prime Jonas Hoglund on this squad opposed to Jumbo. Adam Brooks is a better option currently for the role compared to Joe and I'll fall on that sword.

Besides Freddy not being able to stop a beach-ball on most nights, he is terrible with his stick.

It's such an advantage for a team to have a goalie that can stop the puck behind the net on a shoot- in and then pass it to their d-man. Freddy stays in his net like he is scared to venture out. He's useless in that regard.
Hes weak 5 hole, weak glove side high, weak blocker, routinely either plants himself early then refuses to move or hes completely out of position swimming.
At the end of the day, his ENTIRE job is to stop the puck.
And he doesn't.

Always the same game plan to beat the leafs. Hit them. Once they start to get hit they shrink and play soft. It goes to the core of the team who are all soft.

Simmons, Bogo are just part players and can't do it all. Hyman is a role player but at least plays hard. Too many soft players like Marner, Kerfoot, Nylander. Tavares, Thornton. The D is butter soft aside from Muzzin and Bogo.

Matthews is starting to show some anger on the ice so maybe that is a key to turning the soft team around and leading the charge to not shrink when it gets rough.

I don't mind them developing a third line to play against top lines. This will give the top 6 more time an space throughout the game.

Hyman Kerfoot Mikheyev were pretty good tonight.
Why can't our top line of Matthews, Marner, Hyman go up against other top lines. They take up about 25 mil cap space. Surely, we can trust them to play against guys making half the money?

no he hasn’t. He’s been too soft. button even showed a clip where he was really soft. Never thought I would agree with Button

Matthews has been very momentary. Lapses of good followed by a lot of lacklustre

Also I'm not going to completely lose my mind and wine and cry like most in the gdt just yet. It's only game 2. But if they are playing like this in a couple weeks after they're warmed up the I'll be pissed.
Well why do we need to work our way into shape and desire to win? other teams don't have this much talent buy show up for games just fine. Why is it always this team that continuously needs excuses? the talent and good young years are wasting away fast. I'm tired of the same excuses and pampering of these guys. Give me a team full of Hymans and I will beat you 99 of the time. I'm already board with this season, last night was boring in my books. I need fire and passion and this team is so far from that.

Just finished watching. I thought Leafs were really going in the first period. They came to play. Puck movement, breakouts, offensive pressure. But they never finished. Give credit to Ottawa, but you gotta bear down man, easily should've had 2+ goals in first. Hyman's line was impressive. The big 4 were neutralized, even with secondary scoring which is usually going to end in a loss.

After that honestly, Ottawa looked really good. They seemed prepared after that. Give credit again to Ottawa. Murray made some timely saves, their d-zone looked good too.

Leafs really looked bad in the 2nd and first 10 mins of 3rd. Andersen allowing 3+ goals against Ottawa as usual, but no help as well from team.

Hopefully Campbell can give the team some confidence tmrw. Team defense was not there. They really looked like they wanted the game to end after 4-2.

Their PP is atleast scoring so that's good. Only 2 games, 1-1. Brodie's first bad game as a Leaf is out of the way. Matthews said they took foot off the gas. As I said pre game, you don't play 60 mins or execute on chances, unlikely to win.

I know it early, so I'm trying not to be to negative . But can someone explain to me why Robertson is sitting in the press box? The kid was good enough to insert into the line up in a playoff series but can't crack the regular season line up. I thought he played with heart and grit for a smaller player, and he has a awesome shot. I was looking forward to watching him play, nobody gets better from the press box.

Keefe has to wake up. If Thorton and Vesey are in your top 6 your not a cup contender.

Roberston might not be ready for the NHL full time. He needs time to develop his game, build some strength, and there is nothing wrong with that. His time will come.

Plus, we have Barabanov, a KHL free agent signing, who needs to be given a chance. It's only Barabanov in the lineup tonight, that can come out of the lineup, without passing through waivers. Roberston will be given his chance.

Agreeing with Button for once in my life...”they want to play a game of skill and that’s ok but it’s useless without will”
Couldn’t have put it better myself

Let’s look at the bright side...Marner is buying a Karaoke machine for the boys road trips. He said he wants to add more songs to his arsenal. Atta boy Mitchy! Once the boys gets a few karaokes in them.. the grit and toughness will really rise to the top.

Ya I thought Thornton had something left. He looks done. We can't even sit him tomorrow without waiving him or Dell.
