Post-Game Talk: Leafs lose 4-3 OT in game 5

I’m actually glad we lost game 5.

I love giving those Hab fans false hope.
It’s like when you gotta use the bathroom real bad and you finally get there and the John is occupied...well you know the rest.

That my friends is false hope.

The Leafs literally had to give away the game twice for Montreal to win it. First with the no show in the first and then the boneheaded meltdown in OT. Just come out, play hard and close it out.

Hope this loss motivates them for Saturday. Otherwise we’re in trouble.

We saw Montreal blow a 3 goal lead tonight. They’re still a fragile group. Just start on time and don’t let Montreal get ahead so they’re chasing the game.

Today would have been perfect.
Got a call to pickup PS5-finally after a few months.
The on line delivery finally arrived after being held at customs.
The tax return cheque also arrived-CRA always asked me to paid advance, but with COVID-my income dropped and CRA needed to send back.
Then saw Muzzin tied the game and thought, Leafs win would make this literally one of the best day of my Life.

Physicality had nothing to do with this loss imo. The team was a complete (mental) no show for 40 minutes... from Sandin to Campbell to Matthews to Galchenyuk. Other than Nylander who was really good? You could say Muzzin... Like this was a chance, AT HOME, to close out a playoff series and they basically mailed it in. Fake comeback made it look somewhat good.

Like, when I call this team soft I generally mean not taking hits to make plays, or soft on the puck when passing or shooting. I think I have to re-evaluate and focus on the mental side more. Can they even get it done? Sure hope so.

I will say, take away the dumb dumb plays that led to the 1st, 3rd and 4th goals and this game probably looks a lot like games 2 and 3. Would have been nice for Campbell to clean up a couple of those (OT 2 on 0 aside)... like Price was doing all night.

Clealy they have to cut out the mistakes (or at least the egrigeous ones) and just play a tight low event game.

Guess round 2 doesn't start on Saturday for us! Moar rest for JT.

I get that, but these guys are soft as shit. It's no secret anymore. They don't rise to the occassion, Matthews lets Gallagher cross check him and there's no response. I don't get it. It's everything combined, their mindset is not that of winners yet. They don't show any fight back. I think that's the the thing they lack the most.

EDIT: when I say these guys, I mean Matthews and Marner specifically. Teams take runs at them because they know it'll get them off their game and they won't push back.

Well that's fairly useless. How about giving him a chance on the top PP. Or some shifts with Matthews. Putting him with Kerfoot and Mikheyev isn't the greatest reward for a guy like Willy.
Floored that Willy was left off the PP and to add salt to the wound, Jumbo took the faceoff in the offensive zone. What is going on with Matthews???

I thought we did well crawling back

I wonder if Keefe really has the balls to bench Joe and Brooks. If you don't then don't play them so much

Is no one going to talk about Mikaheyev? That dude sucks. He had the game on his stick and didn't get a shot
He could have made pass 2 on 1 early in the game and didn't. Dude just sucks

We have better options in robertsson. Stop fcking around coach

Mikheyev has been invisible since he beat McDavid in a foot race. He can PK and be defensively responsible but that seems to be about it.

They did that too
I should be more clear. A period. 2 periods. God forbid, a game. Not the odd shift. If we piss this away (I don't think we do) while refusing to switch Marner and Nylander, and just watching that top line go through the motions for 80% of the series, I'll cry a little.

I didn't like that move by Keefe. Sandin is going to be a beauty, but he's too young and inexperienced to be thrown into the fire like that.
I could be wrong, but I believe Keefe probably felt like he could afford, and likely felt it was necessary, to give Sandin some playoff experience against the Habs in the event that they need him later. I think Keefe putting Dermott in for an important Game 4 was an indication of this.

I highly doubt that Keefe would have stuck with Sandin after Game 1 against Boston or Tampa Bay.

MacKinnon 9 pts in 4 games. Kucherov misses the whole season with hip surgery and has 11 pts in 6 games. Nylander has 7 pts this series.

Matthews and Marner? 8 pts combined. Marner has 8 assists and no goals through his last 16 playoff games. Unacceptable

They didn't come out flat, they came out brain dead and really it was just the 1

Well Habs won the face off and controlled the puck for the entire time the big line was out there in OT. Which was kind of a repeat of their nonchalant settling in to open the first period.

Leafs were the better team on the night in the end.

But they didn't match the energy in the 1st.
They played like crap in the first, rallied and came back.

And then they lost in spectacular fashion in OT.

I love the Leafs. They were not the better team on the night in the end.

Matthews and Marner have got to be wayyyy better. I was honestly expecting big things from them this game and it might have been their worst game of the series which is extremely disappointing. Big boys of the best teams step up, I’m definitely not ok with the core staying in tact if they continue to be just ok and end up losing this series. Not acceptable. Nylander has earned my respect though, he’s been a beast so far

Yes, its been terribly disappointing for those two. I thought Marner was very good tonight though, he just had no one to pass too as there was never an F3 in play it seemed, just always him and Hyman... not sure what Matthews was up to. Matthews was good defensively for the most part, but Nylander is able to be good both ways... as is Marner though I realize he is not scoring.

There were 2 plays that stood out to me. on the Habs 2nd goal there was a scramble in front of the net, Habs won it and pushed the puck towards the net and I think Holl put it in. It might have been in the 3rd, same exact play in front of Price, guess who wins the battle? Habs... puck cleared, no danger.

Our guys rarely if ever completly sell out in those situaions... like someone has to say fck it, I am all in. We are clearly the better skilled team here, and have been matching the Habs effort (which has been kinda lame) so have been able to control the series for the most part... I mean even tonight, we played like complete crap and prob should have won. Just makes me wonder how game 1 vs the Jets will go (for either of these teams).

Not sure whether I'd be more pissed if our core players lost us the game or if press-box material did like Sandin and Galchenyuk did tonight...
