Post-Game Talk: Leafs lose 4-3 OT in game 5

If your claim is that Matthews was disengaged during this game, how do you explain him leading both teams in hits?

I think people confuse Matthews not scoring with him being disengaged.

Because he can't forget what's his strengths are. Generating scoring chances. Opponents should be terrified of him and his skills size

I should have been more specific, offensively he wasn't that engaged. He just seemed to be behind the play a lot.

I have seen alot of OTs in my lifetime, but never the ridiculous stupidity of a 2 on 0 in the first few minutes of an OT game in the playoffs. However, we need to relax. We're the better team who were just beat by a team that had everything go right for them.

Boneheaded play in OT...check
Unheralded rookie the indirect reason for two of the goals...check
A bearded player who added another minus to his game...check
Two 11 million dollar superstars who have been bafflingly ineffective...check
A goalie who looked like his head wasn't in the game and couldn't smother pucks if his life depended on it...check

This won't happen again. Dermott should have been in for Sandin all along, he's earned it during the season.
Matthews and Marner have to start showing they care, they can't continue to be this bad and unproductive.
Campbell has played well all series, he is allowed one poor game.
Thornton has been terrible in all games except the last one. Keefe has to do the right thing and sit him, even to just give him a rest.

We're going to take this in 6. Nevertheless, I have to take a walk to get the stench of this game out of my system.
Pretty spot on analysis

Even if we win this series I'm concerned about the lack of playoff production from Matthews and Marner. It seems every playoffs for the last 3 years, whether is against the Bruins, Blue Jackets and now the Habs, their production takes a huge dive when compared to the regular season. Like if we vs the Avs, and they throw out Landeskog - Mackinnon - Rantanen, and we send out Matthews and Marner, we're gonna lose the matchup if they can't produce in those minutes.

You think that him being physical takes away from his offensive game?

Forget what has happened so far. Game 6 will have its own narrative.

It's up to our guys to decide what that narrative will be.

Not overreaction but an observation
This is why 3 games in a row. He needs to focus on generating chances first. His line was hemmed in almost all night by Denault. Let.me repeat by Dneault

Funny you say that, Hrudy made a striking comment in the OT intermission... speaking about Price he said he would be thinking about Nylander coming in with a chance, and that might worry him... great for Willy but the fact that anyone would insinuate that Price would not be thinking about Matthews ripping one home is crazy. In this case it was unfathomly accurate too. He was not dangerous. Also, does Price not have a blocker side? Only person genreally shooting there is Nylander? Almost every good chance we had was 5-hole or crest.

Steve Simmons challenges Keefe on why Nylander played 7 minutes less than Marner in the post game. Not a convincing response. Just rambling on about game conditions and Nylander keeping shifts short. Not good, Keefe.

And we were not in danger of being eliminated today...

Oh for the love of, that isn't the point. The original point I made is that only the Leafs, when they are in danger of being eliminated in the post-season, blow 3 goal leads. We could've done it to Montreal tonight but Galchenyuk handed the team that drafted him a gift.

I won't claim that Matthews had a great game, and I don't have the advanced stats from tonight's game in front of me, but Matthews finished with a point and a +1. Danault had 0 across the board. So it couldn't have been all that bad.

With the way he's throwing hits (and not doing much else) we should consider putting him on the third line in a checking role.

Danault is a pest and a checker but you’d have to think Matthews needs to blast him physically a few times to start a game and make sure his legs are wobbly to compete as the game wears on. Got to weaponize being 6’3”. Mark Messier didn’t win 6x cups not destroying guys who get in the way.

He made a stupid spin pass as the last man back, If that’s what we should expect from him when he’s covering a pinch, then he shouldn’t be in the lineup. This game was almost 100% on Galch
It was on the whole team for not showing up at god damn puck drop to start the game. I just dont understand why its so hard for us to eliminate a team when we've got them on the ropes AT HOME too. Game 6 Boston, Game 5 Columbus Game 5 Montreal. Montreal looked like they were ready to shake hands after game 4. Show up play hard, put them out of their misery, move on to the 2nd round and dont play till maybe Sunday or Monday. Nope, cant do that, lets give them hope let them play like they have something to play for and dont show up till the 3rd. Its sickening.

Because he was gassed most of the game. Same with the CBJ series our coaches throw them out before they’ve even recovered from the last shift

It really was, though. Something is not right with the guy imho. Again, I get the defensive play and they are trying to pin him down, but how do other players like Willy get skating and moving and getting chances and Matthews isn't? How isn't he taking key faceoffs again, and why is he is the last to enter the offensive zone? Is he morphing into a JT type style in his absence, or is he nursing an injury? I will go with the latter.
