Post-Game Talk: Leafs lose 4-3 OT in game 5

Thornton out Nash in

Thornton is fine in 4th line minutes. He played 8:38... take away the PP time and he is down to 7 and a half... that is reasonable.

I would like to see Spezza get some extra shifts or shifts with the more skilled players here and there... he is a real emotional leader... had no shots tonight and played 8:51.

Get Nylander some reps with Matthews like the old days.
Never understood the insistence on pairing #16 with #34. You have two highly skilled wingers with similar but also wholly different offensive games that have chemistry. If one isn’t working that night, go with the other. It’s like Keefe is scared to take the initiative tactically.

Seriously... Not sure why this hasn't happened yet.

Questionable to a degree, unless there is a discipline to the thought that Matty and Mitch need to figure it out.

I think it's because Nylander is capable of carrying his own line right now...has a great possession game, skates well, strong on his feet, has a great shot and could pass the puck. Matthews and Marner are getting their chances...that first goal could have been Marner's goal, as it was going in because Hyman barely touched the puck. Matthews and Marner definitely need to pick up their game...Leafs would have won if either of them got a goal tonight.

The funny thing is that so many guys in this forum were already looking at round 2 and acting like the Leafs were automatically going to win this

I was like, huh? It might be 3-1 leafs but this is the Leafs we're talking about... they can easily blow it and it will be no surprise

One thing is for sure: this is going 7 games

More than a fair take to say he produces his own offense and can drive his own line.

Sometimes I think you need to ride the hot hand though to get your other stars going.

I dont see them changing anything in game 6, but if it goes 7 I imagine all bets are off.

No way Matthews is hurt. Defensive clinic in the second period. Finished all his checks too. Sportsnet posts the entire game. The evidence is there for those brave enough to consider they might be being too harsh.

He needs to score yeah but he was still a beast. And he would have a goal if Marner passed to him the way he did 3 weeks ago.

Like people have been saying. If he had Nylander on his line they would have raked tonight.

So much space out there for Nylander to fly the way Matthews played tonight. Such a waste not having them together.

I saw vintage Marner on the Brodie setup in the second period. Beautiful play. Used his edge work to create space then found the open man. That's what we need from him Saturday. Not what he's currently doing. Otherwise it's time to get him away from Matthews.

It's weird that on one hand you criticize a group for already looking at round 2, and on another, you're certain it's going to 7 games...the Leafs almost came back to take it in 5 tonight. They are still in prime position to take it in 6 games. I expect a much better game from the Leafs on Saturday.

Lmaoo. In what way exactly. Kappy at least made the occasional rush or fancy play
We can agree, to disagree on that one. 5th overall pick (who has struggled finding his way after MTL tossed him to the wolves) VS mid first rounder who hasn't been that great other then wheels for days. Gally has posted a 30 goal year and was the much highly touted player... so I feel Gally is much more skilled. He's shown it with a few plays this series. Kappy made a similar play if I'm not mistaken against the CAPS in the playoffs. Sorry I forgot to match your grade 6 Lmaoooooooo.

You are a sniper and don't take faceoffs and don't do your thing? You can play another game. He is not the same right now.

He's leading all forwards in ice time, he's leading all players in hits, he's playing great defense. He may be snake-bitten with a 4% shooting percentage, but there is no indication that he's injured, disinterested, or any other silly thing folks want to put on him.

The Leafs organization has always shied away from having Marner run his own line with mix and match line mates. His rookie year was replacing Kessel on the JVR Bozak unit, the most established at the time, then Tavares, then Matthews. They’ve never tasked him with being his own guy.

First and Fourth line need to step it up in game 6, I understand Marner plays PK and hasn't been playing poorly, but 0 goals in past 16 playoff games doesn't cut it and he has had plenty of opportunity to score in this series.

We didn't match the intensity MTL came out with, but even with Jack playing mediocre tonight and being down 3-0 we still looked better then MTL for a majority of the game, they need to capitalize on there chances in game 6 and put MTL down early.

That 2nd line is flying. My issue is playing 34 & 16 close to 25 minutes when the 2nd line is clearly better right now. Keefe puts the top line out when they are still tired and they get poor results

He definitely drove his own line when it was Marleau - Kadri - Marner, but I know what you mean, Kadri was no slouch that year.

Highlights are on youtube if you need to verify what I'm saying. They have a rocket winner on their line but not prioritizing his stick. 5 games in a row now of it.
I'd argue the exact opposite; that line, especially on the PP, is OVER-PRIORITIZING Matthews, and Montreal has figured it out. In fact, a few goals in this series have been a product of Carey Price AND the Montreal defense assuming that Matthews is the target and being shocked when someone else takes the shot instead.

I've lost count of the number of plays that have ended because Hyman or Marner pass to Matthews and he either one-times it into Price's logo or the Montreal defense have already converged on him assuming he'd be the shooter...

Yeah, seems like Keefe is forcing the issue right now trying to get the top line to break out, but it's not working. Nylander needs to play alot more...was he at 17 to 18 minutes tonight?

Yea I just feel like we start overrating anyone once they become Leafs territory and underrating when someone is disposed. Naz being a borderline 1C to now Kerfoot being a better player even before the playoffs started even though no one would ever say that before the trade etc. It’s just Leaf fans being Leaf fans as always.

The story with Gally is just was was was. I don’t think you can hold onto draft position this many years in. I think once you go on waivers and not due to physical decline all that goes out the window. Scouts regularly get things wrong or Biggs would be an asset right now

Speed: Kappy
Shot: Debatable but I’d lean Kappy
Passing: Galchenyuk
IQ: Also debatable.
