This has been my view since the 2018 playoffs. Babs is a good coach, but he is, in my opinion, the wrong coach for this team. Last year this team played some dreadful, sloppy games. This year it seems to be more than half of their games. Players this good shouldn't play this bad. So, to me there is two real options - either these players are much worse than most of us think, or these are players who simply are not built to succeed the way Babcock wants them to play. If its the former the team is screwed. If its the latter a change in the coach should go a long way. Dubas was allowed to build his team - that makes no sense if he is not allowed to bring in the coach who meshes with what Dubas has built.

There is no doubt in my mind Dubas should be fired immediately for incompetence.

But this is the Maple Leafs and they will always do the wrong thing, so I expect Babcock to be fired this season or next season.

He did make a pretty good stick check on the back check when Pasternak had a chance.

Marner skated the whole length of the ice, got close enough to jab at the stick which nullified the shot, did not even get a penalty.

It's like these guys didn't grow up playing hockey on this planet but in an alternate reality where everyone just gives hugs and drinks at every whistle to their opponents all game. It's the same NHL players from the same leagues everyone else has

Look, I've harped on this team and in this PGT, they deserve criticism, but the schedule has not been kind either.

I'm sorry but the Sabres schedule has been rough too. They just played 5 games in 8 days which includes a western road trip. They went 4-1 in those games. Maybe if the top Leaf players cared about winning instead of collecting money they may win some games

Tbf I've seen and see plenty of other soft teams with no enforcers or fighters and they all stick up for each other always. Toronto is not a small team compared to other NHL teams anyway. Matthews, Tavares, Muzzin, Gauthier, Marincin, Mikheyev, Rielly are no slouches physically. In fact, it's Boston that has a bunch of sub 6 feet guys with Napoleon complexes. Leafs are probably both bigger and stronger on average. It's a culture issue. No one can really pin point the exact reasons though as to why it became like this.

I don't care much what we have to say about coaching etc... but if Matthews, Marner and Nylander put in efforts like this every night, we aren't going to be a very good team. They are paid like Elite players in this league, and they haven't shown that very much this year. Coaching be damned... these kids just aren't showing up. Maybe they hate the coach, and have given up on him... I don't know, but even if that's the case, you'd expect, or hope for more pride.. especially for the $.

You need a guy to drag the team into the fight and we don't have that. It was amusing seeing Torey Krug take a penalty on Gauthier and he had the nerve to cross check Gauthier like Goat was the nuisance. We need that kind of attitude.

I think we actually need a loud, raw raw leader in the room. We don't need more quiet lead by example people or good veteran calming influences. We need a couple of honest to goodness pests to bullies out there who will actually get things going.

The idea of Mitch Marner wearing an A is also unacceptable. How is this "kid" personality leading anyone? That's a sidekick, not a leader.

They may not have played top teams in the league but they at least have a system that works. Their top players actually try and they do play defense.

Well, I would leave Shanny out of it as he did righted the ship.
Also, he had the balls to convince the MLSE board about a full blown rebuild.
I think it has to do with Babs coaching and the team being too young. They don’t have anyone who is in their prime. Really think it is time to trade 1 of the big 4 and one of AJ and Kap for some mid 6 vets who might not score 50pts but play the game the hard way.
As the team got enough talents with JT, Matthews, Kerfoot, one of Willie/Marner and one of AJ/Kap with Hyman, and Soup. That’s 7 of your top 9, then you add in someone like Ferland and Foglino or whoever, as long as they play hard and tough.
That’s still a pretty good Top 9.

I think giving the A to Mitch is a mistake. They should have given it to Muzzin, someone who actually won something.

Agreed. And how does Shanahan who was a tough mfer let Dubas build this team of Stars on Ice? What were they thinking? Build a team to win in a men’s non contact league?
