ok ok ok

lemme get this insanity straight

you JUST handed out big overpayments to the "main young dudes"

like

and NOW you are saying they are quitting on the team because "they are emotionally done with babs"?

and you think the remedy is to fire him?

just bloody WOW!!!!

so we are back to the kessel, inmates running the asylum BS again

like I said “ rightfully or wrongly “ he’s gone and they have given up sorry to say

I'm not sure if the stats back me up, but it feels like the Leafs are so easy to take out of games now. Long stretches even in the 3rd period of close games where they play with zero urgency. I don't see much desire to win if things start to not go their way

Back to backs and 3in4 are always difficult, especially playing rested teams and with travel. It's amazing that needs to be said.

Look, I've harped on this team and in this PGT, they deserve criticism, but the schedule has not been kind either.

It's always excuses, though. If the schedule is more relaxed in October then it's more hectic in the back half and people complain then too. This is the NHL. They are pros. They should battle through it.

It's not very complicated. All contracts are largely based on what the player has shown at the time they sign the contract. Boston's players were good but not great, let alone some of the best in the world, at the time. Ours went into contract negotiations as one of the best scorers in the league and someone who was already a PPG player in his 21st year.

In both cases, the players were paid for what they were at the time.
Both were overpaid for what they were to be honest. They'd be taking a lot less heat earning a mill or so less.

Dubas' biggest overpayment is either Matthews or Nylander, TBH.
You just have a divergent opinion on everything, don't you?

I have an extremely hard time seeing either. There's very clear trends in what costs and what determines comparables. Nylander was close to his, even matching his according to some professionals. Matthews wasn't far off. Marner was off by about $1.5M.

Matthews and Marner wanted more money than Tavares and in relation got more money (Marner a bit less AAV, but he also gave less term)...they should be carrying this team on their backs night in and night out...at least show up in games if not in the scoreboard.

See this is the thing, the problem that separates people with hockey IQ like Babs and us the fans that think scoring points equals having a good game. Scoring points is irrelative you can do that and not play winning hockey. Matthews is really good at that, Marner this year is still picking up points but is playing the worst hockey of his life so far this year. He once had a motor that hasn't been the case at all this year so far.

Both need to be called out and it's time to start laying the law down with benching.

I sure miss Hyman. This team is missing it's heart.
I agree that Hyman plays with heart. I also like how Moore plays. I can’t believe how passionless our 3 “I’m being paid even though I haven’t really accomplished anything” stars are playing. Matthews is so lazy in the defensive zone, like he could care less to be back there. I’m going to cut Marner a little slack because I’m not sure if the death of the seven-year-old girl who had cancer that he was close to is affecting him. I’m sure that it is. I used to dislike Babcock, but now I truly dislike Dubas. It really appears that he has no idea or concept of how to put a team together. I hope he is on a short leash. The way we are currently playing, for that matter the way that we have played since January 2019, I doubt that we will make the playoffs even.

so, both Boston and Toronto signed their players for values that were generated by their current play at the time?

Ok, I appreciate your clarification on your thoughts.

I completely disagree, and read 100 times over we are paying for what our stars are capable of doing, not what they currently were doing.

But that's the beauty of this place. We all have different opinions.

Well our GM signed him to that ridiculous dea just like he signed Matthews to his terrible deal.

Still if Marner and Matthews (add tavares when hes back) get back to their pre set levels the deals are 1 mill overpayments which can be lived with. Its nights like these where they come out and just skate for 60 mins that make people frustrated and make ridiculous claims. Everyones frustrated with the group, so it will continue. Hopefully some move happens which sparks the team to get going.

Matthews' deal is so much more salvageable than the Marner contract. Provided he's healthy- and yes I know his durability has been a major concern for us- he's good for 40 goals year in/out.

Mitch is a dependent talent. He's overpaid from every angle and it's going to be tough as **** to even move that contract to better our team if it comes down to it.

This has nothing to do with 1-game trigger-happy reactions.

How can we point at the schedule's difficulty when we came into the season as a team with Stanley Cup aspirations?
I agree completely. You can’t blame the schedule for being tough. The team is playing like crap. Although some of the losses could have gone our way but that’s had nothing to do with us being good or unlucky. I expect this team with all these talents to be destroying and dominating teams night in and night out and not the other way around.

That's fair- I have those same concerns. Honestly, at this point, I'm legit praying we can find a way to avoid Boston in a playoff series.

I have no faith in our abilities to weather the storm they bring every.single.time they play us.

Give me Tampa/Florida/Buffalo please. Please.

To be fair, he’s still young and has tons of room to grow. These last few games have been the only times I’ve had anything overly negative to say about him. It’s just frustrating.

Personally, I want them to play the Bruins and beat them. It won’t happen if Matthews plays like he did tonight.

Absolutely. Not a fan of either contract, particularly not Marners. However, I don't really worry about young RFAs being overpaid by a mil. That's nothing compared to carrying around a fourth liner costing $6M, for example.

Putting cap considerations aside, I'd love to see a power forward like Evander Kane playing the wing with AM and Nylander. Matty and Willy would play less scared and Kane has a high motor with Hyman-like puck retrieval skills.

He sure ain't from the Soo like loose-wallet Kyle Dubas...:sarcasm:
Sure the Leafs overpaid guys, but they don't have a true anchor contract like a lot of teams do(and most will soon). At least none they haven't been able to find a crafty way around.

There will be peaks and valleys in a season from a scheduling POV. Thisll even out eventually, but that doesn't take away from how difficult this start is.

What a joke.

2016-17
20 year old Nylander == 22G 61P (in 81GP)
20 year old Pastrnak == 34G 70P (in 75GP)

2017-18
21 year old Nylander == 20G 61P
21 year old Pastrnak == 35G 80P

No, they were never good comparables....

Pastrnak's 21 year old season was after he signed his contract. You didn't pay attention to anything I said in my post... C'mon man, be better than this.

It's fine to be unhappy with Nylander's contract, but at least have some good points to back up your discussion/opinion if you are going to try and debate it.

Name me another player that signed anywhere close to 11.634 with a career high of 73 points.... you can't? Okay... find one with a career high of 80 points... still can't?

Marner's career high is 21 points ahead of Matthews'.... How you can state that Matthews fits with his comparables, but Marner doesn't fit with his, is beyond me...

Unpopular opinion but I think this goes back to that Kapanen stick toss against the Habs on HNIC.

Idiotic play that showcased just how unfocused this team can be and how little confidence they possess in closing games out start-to-finish.
