Another incompetent GM has set the team back another decade. A great opportunity completely wasted because Dubas has no spine.
Boston's players have those great contracts because they all exploded after signing the contracts. Pastrnak had one good season with 60 points against an actual goaltender. Marchand was a 60 point player. Bergeron... well I would have given Bergeron the world already then but offensive is what costs and he didn't put up that kind of points then.

Meanwhile, our players jumped up as some of the best young players immediately. That costs.

Dubas overpaid some, especially for Marner, but it's laughable to say that these contracts set the team back at all, let alone a decade. I have no idea how people get so hung up about a possible $1M overpayment of Matthews as if almost every other team don't carry around worthless players overpaid by several times as much.

If one thing comes out of this it's that we need a f***ing back up goalie.

I don't care who goes, just get one.

I’m worried about Matthews. This is the Bruins they were playing. He was invisible tonight. Sure, he’ll tally up the goals and points by the end of the season but when the going gets tough, where will he be? It’s not inspiring, to say the least.

Marner was poor but at least he was engaged and looked somewhat like he cared.

That's fair- I have those same concerns. Honestly, at this point, I'm legit praying we can find a way to avoid Boston in a playoff series.

I have no faith in our abilities to weather the storm they bring every.single.time they play us.

Give me Tampa/Florida/Buffalo please. Please.

Breaking up with a woman is a lot easier! Been looking to try and cheer for another team. I JUST CAN'T DO IT!
Yep. I have a soft spot for VGK because I live there, so maybe I'll watch more of them. Still, it won't be the same.

sorry, so to clarify, Boston players have great contracts because they got paid for what they were "currently" doing when they got signed. Then exploded afterwards.

Toronto players got paid (HUGELY) not for what they were currently doing, but what they were potentially capable to do in the "future".

And now we are waiting for that potential to arrive?

Is that correct?

He was a pretty good comparable.... He just exploded AFTER he signed his contract. He also plays way better against the Leafs than any other team which gives Leaf fans a bit of a biased opinion.

He had 2 seasons of .5ppg (where he didn't even play full seasons) and 1 season where he scored 34g/70pts. That's fairly comparable to a guy with 2x 60pt seasons.

Pastrnak just kept getting better after his extension (ppg and then 81pts in 66games) whereas Nylander had a terrible season last year.

What a joke.

2016-17
20 year old Nylander == 22G 61P (in 81GP)
20 year old Pastrnak == 34G 70P (in 75GP)

2017-18
21 year old Nylander == 20G 61P
21 year old Pastrnak == 35G 80P

No, they were never good comparables....

In all seriousness ....
The fact that they were called out by their coach and that they haven’t played well this yeAr , and after their family meeting and all they been saying and their body language as of late ....
To come out as flat as they were tonight for the most part and to just roll over as they did in the last period and the two pps ... Does not look good at all , not even the slightest , they are emotionally done with Babs
Rightfully or wrongly they are done with him
Completely
Oh not everyone ,but the main young dudes have completely tuned out ..
100% time for a change immediately
They looked horrible tonight
ok ok ok

lemme get this insanity straight

you JUST handed out big overpayments to the "main young dudes"

and NOW you are saying they are quitting on the team because "they are emotionally done with babs"?

and you think the remedy is to fire him?

just bloody WOW!!!!

so we are back to the kessel, inmates running the asylum BS again

Loved Bergerons excellent clean super fair defensive play on Matthews on that odd man rush.

Leafs deserved every call they got but the refs need to call them both ways.

Literally the next play the bruins slash our guys stick and it breaks no call.

If you're already winded in October then there is a problem with conditioning.
Back to backs and 3in4 are always difficult, especially playing rested teams and with travel. It's amazing that needs to be said.

Look, I've harped on this team and in this PGT, they deserve criticism, but the schedule has not been kind either.

well, prior to getting paid, he was soft because he didn't want to get insured and not get paid.

now he gets paid, he is soft because he gets paid...

or maybe, just maybe (hear mere out here), maybe just is SOFT and it has nothing to do with coaching, getting paid, or anything else...

I know, crazy.
If you think he was “soft” during his rookie season then you’re mistaken. Sure he never threw the body much but he was always engaged in all 3 zones of the ice. Are you arguing that he’s doesn’t throw the body (cause I don’t think anyone would argue he does) or are you arguing that he’s never been engaged defensively?

You don’t have to act like some kind of arrogant know it all (just hear me out here, I know crazy, etc) to get your point across cause it just makes you look like a clown

we run into a lot of trouble with those teams too. nothing is guaranteed with the way the leafs have been playing so far this season. I am really hoping it's all just because there are so many new faces in the dressing room that they are still finding their groove with one another. I dunno.

It's not very complicated. All contracts are largely based on what the player has shown at the time they sign the contract. Boston's players were good but not great, let alone some of the best in the world, at the time. Ours went into contract negotiations as one of the best scorers in the league and someone who was already a PPG player in his 21st year.

In both cases, the players were paid for what they were at the time.

Dubas' biggest overpayment is either Matthews or Nylander, TBH.

Nope he was not soft in his rookie season.
