Lots of good things to take away from the game despite the cliff jumpers in here. Swayman was amazing in net for the Bruins tonight, that's for sure and I thought Woll was solid too.

Really, the big issues to me were the Lily/Brodie pairing from the very first shift (and it's not just on Brodie) and the second line getting caved in again.

Take those 2 things away and the other lines/pairings got the better of the Bruins on the night, outhitting them and mostly outworking them on the boards. (Only 2 players on the Leafs had 0 hits in the game....Domi and Nylander)

I could see a shakeup of the 2nd and 3rd lines coming soon and people will whine and cry when we go back to the more effective lines.
Sounds like the same problems they’ve had for the past 7 yrs.

Swayman was solid. I disagree with Woll though. He made some great saves, some were questionable at best

Brodie has been bad all year. Lilly has never panned out. Realites we have to come to terms with

That first Boston goal is telling.

Rielly leaves the front of the net wide open.
Ilya L is also covering no one in no man’s land.
Nobody attacking the puck (our 88 watching their 88).
Boston has a lone man in front of net.
He scores.

Rielly the main culprit.
He’s out of position.

LOL just saw this on twitter

Paper tigers.

Games like these are tough because Boston keeps losing their good players to retirement, and yet they find ways to bring new guys and buy into this special way they play with a lot of pace and grit and the Leafs have this goup of talented players who bring neither. I think Knies stood out to me last night, he was always in the battle. He makes rookie mistakes, but he was in there.
Thing is, this is the most mediocre iteration of the Bruins we've seen in a while, and they are missing one of their best defenseman.

Huh? I replied to a bunch of your posts last night, no? I'm not a big fan of posting during the game because it's usually a gong show in the gameday thread.
I posted this in the post game forum around 6:00am today, your first post was a few pages later.

Part of the problem with our D is that Rielly isn’t a top pairing guy. Hate to say it but it’s true. For as much he brings with his ability to skate the puck out of the zone he is atrocious in front of the net and along the boards. But there’s nothing out there besides maybe Hanifin that is realistic

Boston has a good hockey culture, ownership that demands success, and makes changes when they aren’t happy with the status quo, a far cry from the mediocrity that’s welcomed in Toronto…….

Barring an unexpected trade, I think by the playoffs we will see Bertuzzi back on the top line and someone else with Nylander and Domi. We aren't going to see a Nylander/Bertuzzi/Domi line in the playoffs. The defensive deficiencies are too pronounced with that line.

This is why I wanted Perry. You need these players that f*ck with the opposition. Even between whistles. Drag them into the fight
The problem is and it has been apparent....having a tough 4th line isn't going to change it. The core players have to change the way they play the game. It has been long enough, and they have had enough opportunity that I doubt it will ever happen but that is what needs to happen. Like the Rielly hit on Point in the playoffs last year really is the perfect illustration of that. Stamkos and Kucherov didn't stand around and check to see if the hit was clean....or leave it to Jeannot and Maroon to take care of later. Stamkos jumped in a beat up Matthews. Right away no questions asked. If Marner gets blown up is Matthews doing the same? I have my doubts.

Perryesque players are good, but winning has to have that mentality throughout the line up, I’ve yet to see it from the stars, they have talent out the wazoo, but could care less about winning if it means having to bite down and fight…….

How do you look at a single game and come to this conclusion? Even more mysterious that it was a loss.

Hopefully come playoff time that is Domi, Reaves, Bertuzzi, Knies
Hopefully it’s every player, especially the stars…….

Big home game against bitter rival that you will probably meet in round #1, chance for Willy to show he is as good or better than Pasta and he is virtually invisible, and Pasta schools him and the Leafs D.

These guys are not willing to play outside their comfort zones. No way you can win more than a round playing this way.

Pasta was the best player on the ice last night, 88, 34, 16 virtually invisible………

He's basically Dermott's right handed brother.
There were lots of breakdowns on the goals against, not just D.
Then that PP, someone coughed it up, Lili did well to break up the rush along the boards wand there were still more bruins supporting the rush than the leafs defending it.
Not a good game for Lili, but it wasn’t just him.

We get into this bad habit of puck watching in the defensive zone and fail to locate the opposing player and gain position. We just get so fixated on the puck and don't take care of the defensive responsibility which is first priority.

The Frederik SH point blank chance/ Geekie goal are perfect examples and you can get away with this against mediocre teams but against elite teams it'll sink you.

Guys that I really don't trust in a playoff series with Boston or Florida:

1. Brodie
2. Liljegren
3. Knies
4. Having to play all of Matthews, Marner, Nylander - that's 25% of the forward group playing scared.
5. Whoever takes our annual playoff suspension - smart money on Domi, Rielly or maybe Bertuzzi
6. Goaltending

If we take care of business, we could still be 4 points back with a game in hand in two days.

I actually thought Keefe was bang on post game, we came out great, our PP gave them momentum, we carried play in the second, but ultimately it was their ability to protect the net better than ours which was the difference.

Lil has to clear the crease on that goal, if this guy doesn’t start recognizing danger quicker he’s a liability. It’s the same story over and over, when he has time, he’s fine, excels, when he’s pressed, his IQ escapes him and he makes poor decisions. Brodie was slow as well, that pair was awful.

Reilly isn’t playing good hockey atm, since his return, the old defensive problems are apparent. We need the guy we saw emerge last season, Honestly, last night Boosh was great, he actually negated some bad decisions from Reilly. On the goal Reilly goes to double team a man Boosh already had coverage on, what was he thinking?

Benoit was fantastic last night, his offence is coming too and he made smart pinches all night, he and McCabe are easily our best pair atm, thank god we have them.

Our second line has some serious defensive issues, not sure what the solution is there, but Nylander is so passive right now, it’s contributing to Domi’s weakness down low.

I actually loved Knies game last night, apart from the penalty. He was great winning pucks, best player on that line. Marner did make some plays, Matthews was whiffing and late on shots, uncharacteristic.

Bottomline takeaway, we need to be tougher in front of our net, the Bruins were much better in this regard.

Let’s see what we bring Thursday, we’ve beat some good teams of late.

MATH LESSON EVERYONE!!!

What is a "Perimeter"?

Agree with this.

Would it make sense then for Marner to play with a C that will go inside said perimeter? Tavares does it. Consistently. If Mitch needs to patrol the outside, and make wizardry passes, SOMEONE has to be inside that effing triangle to do something with them. The two culprits in this picture with Mitchy are not him.
