My optimistic self knows that regular season head to head results are meaningless when looking ahead to playoff success, so time to move on
For sure. This was just one game of an 82 game warmup for the real season, best not to get too up or down after any one game. Win game 1 of the playoffs and every bad regular season loss will be wiped from memory. Same goes if we lose game 1 - if that happens, will anyone care how many regular season goals Matthews scored?

That said, it's well established what this team is - for seven years in a row, they've played well above average during the regular season followed by sub .500 hockey in the playoffs. That being the case, there are limits to how optimistic I can be about what this spring will bring. How does that saying go? Fool me once, twice, three times, four times, five times, six times ... I think that's when I finally decided that I won't be fooled again but I would love to be pleasantly surprised. We'll see what happens.

Button is the biggest clown out there. We go on a 8-2 run beating Colorado and Vegas and he says nothing at all.

We lose one game to Boston and he comes out and says we’re not close to contending and our defence is terrible. Absolute joke.
He's unlistenable now, he just comes off as a "get off my lawn" irritable curmudgeon. Click.

This place makes me laugh

When does our defense look good?

When something bad has happened (like Rielly being suspended) and our forwards decide they have to put in some work to help them out, holding up forecheckers, getting back quickly and picking up trailers into our zone

When does our defense look bad?

When the forwards don't give an effort and let forecheckers attack our defense unmolested, they don't get back and just let guys skate around doing whatever the hell they want

The defense wasn't great but if that's the help there going to get nobody is going to succeed back there
Yup, it's like all of our forwards think the D make too much money, and thus, think they should handle all the D-zone stuff all by themselves.

Also, the secondary scoring think that our core players make too much money too, so they leave all the scoring for them to figure out.

And, that's how Boston cruises easily to a 4-1 win !!!

Thanks to Taveras, and his wicked shot, at least our no shutout streak continues !!!

Matthews will score a hattrick against Buffalo, and everyone will bow at his feet again. O wow, what a feat! 3 goals against Buffalo. Give me a break. He needs to step up against Boston and Florida and lead this team somewhere. You have to play well against those teams in order to win the Cup.
To be fair, Matthews had (I think) 3 goals against Boston in the first two games this season, but there is no question when you look at the game logs that the majority of his goals this season have been against not so great teams.

Its one game and it wasnt a good showing.

But we need our stars to come up big in games like this ....especially at home. Our PP is bad at the wrong times.

Im still wanting a 2nd line center. Not sold on Domi ......Broadi and Lilly struggled....but I hope they still keep them together.

  1. Monday night at home against a divisional rival
  2. Opportunity to move within 4 points (with 2 games in hand) against the team directly ahead of them in the standings
  3. Playing a good team that has been struggling recently
  4. Boston Bruins
Exactly the result you would expect given any of the above, let alone all four

I'm not excusing Matthews, but this "scores more goals against shit teams" narrative, isn't that true of every player, like the bad teams suck so you should feast on them? Again, with Matthews there is some truth, but generally, yes, bad teams are bad and give up more goals, it's kind of the point.

I recall a couple years ago Marner had more points against top 10 teams than bottom 10, which I found quite compelling, because it really is counter intuitive.

I mean aren't 70% of the posters in this thread saying the same thing?

I think its more divisional rivals .....we did split with Vegas and beat the almighty Avs and Rangers. And all those teams are very good teams

Why would you expect Button to talk about the Leafs daily?

Last night may have been the biggest game of the season to date, of course commentators will discuss it.

I never listen to those mediots.......they throw crap out there to cause a stir and when they are terribly wrong....you dont hear a peep.

Its better to listen to posters here that are alot more tuned in with the leafs then those mediots.
I cant stand ...pregame and postgame jibberish.....and then you have idiots on the radio that think they can solve all the leafs problems

True, all I’m saying is I don’t recall him ever saying anything good about the leafs. Had we won last night I’m sure he would just talk about how it will only matter in the playoffs.

Hopefully come playoff time that is Domi, Reaves, Bertuzzi, Knies

The stars need a bit of that too.

I'm not talking Marner, AM, Willie or JT gooning it up, but at the very least some pushback and just a little bite. Because hoping for anything more from those guys is a pipe dream.

Surprised by these numbers against Boston.

Marner - 23 games 9 Goals 24 Assists +5
Matthews 18 games, 12 Goals, 9 Assists +4
Nylander - 16 points (they didn't break out the stat, weird)
Tavares - 44 games, 17 Goals 19 Assists, -14

TBH I don't think they played that bad overall. The issue is they have a few minutes where they look like a minor-league team and in the NHL that will cost you + we have some awful net-front defense that will be exposed in a playoff series

typical doom and gloom reaction from a bad game. The Leafs played like they didnt care about this game. They didnt have any hustle or attention to detail.

It wont be that way come playoffs.

BUT, I would fire Keefe just for starting Woll. Samsonov just beat COL and the NYR. Leafs are on a 9-1 streak. Who does the coach start in the biggest game so far this season? the goalie who has 1 game in 2 months. If I were the players I would play nonchalant too, cause the coach doesn't care enough to the teams best goalie today.
