It's difficult for even the best teams in hockey nowadays to exploit a good sound defensive structure that takes zero risks. Firewagon teams like Toronto and Pittsburgh depend on the PP for over half of their offense if the game boils down to this. Technically playing unexploitable hockey is more theoretically sound than trying to trade chances, and works better in the playoffs. The team that plays the best neutral zone trap and keeps shots to the outside the best will always have a chance at winning the cup in spite of talent. (See LV & LA)
