OT is such a bogus gimmick, who really cares. But this teams 5v5 is concerning
They were good in their own end and made a bunch of plays where they were hard on their sticks, that they don’t normally bother making. This time last year, we knew they didn’t have it defensively and this year there’s a sliver of hope.

The mirage of a good record. Surviving on loser points is not a winning formula
Playing well defensively and good goaltending from goalies not named Kallgren is a recipe. You don't think Oilers would like some loser points on those 9 regulation losses? It's not a mirage. They deserve that record

They destroyed the Sabres. If that counts at least lol.
Beating the Sabres always counts for something

But we need consistency. I don’t think this team has the depth to get there.

We’ve got the top 6 which is great but having to lug the total anchor that is Kerfoot around.

Beyond that the third and fourth lines are mediocre relative to what they should be on a team that’s a real challenger.

Our immobile defense leaves a lot to be desired as well.

There’s not that much defense in OT with the way they give up the puck in open ice though. It’s usually a counter rush and you’re already screwed.
except the play wasn't even a direct counter off the turn over. It was a turn over, Islanders held the puck for about half a minute, regrouped and just skated into our zone and shot off the half wall.

I get the turn over by marner was brutal but it wasn't what directly lead to the Islanders scoring. Matthews (i've noticed he does this a lot in OT btw) plays as the high man and again he got caught chasing and being too high, instead of playing back at the blue line and letting the islanders come into 3 leafs at the blue line. Matthews chases high, if he doesn't intercept the pass the leafs are screwed. I don't get why they insist of having one man pressure when they don't have possession. It's an easy odd man rush, it's a bad strategy all around.

It shouldn’t have got to OT. Leafs dominated, Sorokin was great, and our goalie is pure shit. I posted the Kallgren stats in the pregame thread. And yet, people said he was solid, we left him out to dry blah blah blah…bullshit. He’s a recreation level goalie, a Zamboni level goalie. Put Petruzelli in net, not this sieve.

lol... lets not go there

If the Leafs were 30 wins, 52 OT losses they'd have a presidents trophy.

While they need to do a better job in OT, 3 on 3 has no bearing on playoff success so I don't know why OT losses are seen in the same light as regulation losses to anybody. If they were playing 5 on 5 in OT, then it's a much more interesting topic to discuss.
No, just playoff seeding. Though I suppose that doesn't much matter as they've lost to all manner of playoff opponents.

Tellvqist was a respectable backup. He doesn't belong in this category
Neither does Scrivens, who carved out a decent NHL career. Not bad for a guy who was living in a basement in Toronto

Oh yeah, he also has a bronze medal from Olympics

I guess. I'd put Reimer and Bernier on there but that would probably catch some flak haha

Still a good record

A 100+ point pace isn't too, too bad. Although honestly, we've bunged up too many chances to pile more points on as we'll likely need some of those when the inevitable slump happens.

There's definitely been some good signs lately and some concerning crap, too.

Once Rielly went down they quit.

Kallgren gave the win away. No communication between goalie and defender?

In overtime they are snake-bit and give no impression they want to score.

people can blame marner all they want but the turn over happened, NYI regrouped and what the hell is Matthews doing there in OT? why is he so high? again if he doesn't intercept the puck, the leafs are screwed. No reason to be pressuring that much, he does this every OT and it always leads to an odd man rush. Justin Holl puts no pressure on Brock Nelson whatsover, just lets him walk and drop pass. Just piss poor defense.

Management needs to buckle down and do some f***ing planning. have a f***ing foresight

Potential opponents (in playoffs)

- If finish Atlantic as 1st (potential guys: Red Wings, Florida, Pens, Isles, Rangers)
- If finish Atlantic 2nd or 3rd (potential guys: Bruins/ Tampa)
- If finish in WC spot (potential guys: Canes, Bruins/Tampa)

Gotta start putting in the work NOW for team balance not wait till the last freakin' minute.

Leafs' pending UFAs (Kerfoot, Engvall, Holl -> total of about 7.5M AAV). I really belive that 7.5 AAV can be used in a more efficient, concrete and competent way
