After round 1, the Athletic did an analysis of the impact of each player. Rielly, Draisaitl, Tkachuk, Marner and Hintz... Marner was the 4th most effective NHL player in round 1.. He was terrible tonight but this I am not at all ready to give up on him... I'm not..
The biggest issue I see is that we don't have a plan B for zone exits against this team.. We always want to make a 2/3 pass exit, (you have seen our forwards not get the puck out in this series) or go for the stretch and bump to a player with speed. We don't utilize lobs and go for loose puck recoveries... I think what that means is that we aren't fast enough or "sticky" enough to work that plan. We aren't the fastest, true but we don't have too many accurate passers on the backend.. Players like Nylander could cause absolute havoc on loose pucks.. I feels there is a plan A only with small modifications but no plan B which means we need everything working to win against Panthers, Canes, Bruins etc.. ... everything..
I thought Matthews made some decent defensive plays tonight... I would like to see him once in a while take a little off his shot to score.. everything has to be ripped at max velocity but he's hitting posts and hitting Bob..place it..
No player other than Nylander and Kampf really played well tonight... how the hell do we win like that? We won't.. everyone needs to be better and it starts with game 4.
