to be honest, if Mitch were made available there would be a lineup of NHL teams calling to get his services. He is a player who struggles to play in the microscope of Toronto. His contract is big, but it is by no means unmanageable and realistically fair for a 100pt play (which he was on track for). Dealing Mitch will not be a problem at all. That said, we have to recognize that we are likely losing this trade. This team kind of reminds me of the Flyers with Richards and Carter. They were labelled as losers by the Flyers brass, and shipped out of town. Only to win the cup the following year with the Kings. We need to remember that Mitch is a special player. He hasn't proved his worth in the playoffs at all, but he is still extremely young. If we start the year with Mitch and Auston on our team, this is not the end of the world. Any deal for Mitch would almost have to be impossible to turn down.
We are still a very promising young team. We can't lose site of this. The dust will settle on this disappointment and the real work will have to get done.
as for Keefe, he made some questionable coaching decisions. I think the Thornton usage is a bit overplayed. Clearly this core needs some baby'ing as evident in the game yesterday. He was supposed to be a guiding light for them, which to some degree he was. Unfortunately it didn't work out. You can't healthy a respected vet like that though. There would be a mutiny. You don't have to understand it as a fan, but that's just how hockey works. I think his biggest mistake this series was challenging the goal in game 6. It was a clear goal, and ended up putting them down again leading to another goal. We win that game in regulation if Sheldon doesn't challenge. But all n all he's been good so far. And most importantly he works well with KD. Something thats massively important to the long term success of the club
