Everyone seemed to be excited about Malhotra and by all accounts he was a disaster...so will take a wait-and-see approach here.

It was amazing the first half of the year. It was the second half that historically sucked, and a lot of that comes down to refusing to take Marner off of the PP and not getting out of that 1-3-1 setup that only emphasized Marner's weaknesses on the PP while hamstringing the strengths of the guys who are actually good on our PP.

Tell us how to feel boom.

I think he did a fairly good job and Brind'Amour said he wanted him back, but Dean wanted to see if he could get more money elsewhere. It's really hard to say though how much of an impact an assistant coach really has. When Brind'Amour was an assistant under Peters, probably nobody thought he was doing a great job.

Can't give too much insight on him specifically so it's hard to tell, but as far as how the Canes played defensively:

Canes play an aggressive style defense where they pinch aggressively to keep pucks in, have tight gaps in the neutral zone, and try to gain possession and move the puck up the ice quickly. While this is effective in driving play/possession, and helps the forwards in transition, it also puts a lot of pressure on the defensemen and there's little room for error. Most of the time, the defense with Hamilton, Slavin, Skjei and Pesce are mobile enough to recover, but when there is a breakdown, it often leads to a high danger chances. So while Carolina was good at preventing shots, they were average/below average at HDCA/60 because of how they play.

They also, as a team, weren't great when a team gets in on them and cycles, but part of that is many of the forwards aren't physical enough to win some of battles.

How much of that is how Brind'Amour wants them playing vs. Chynoweth's coaching? No clue.

Yikes. If that is chynoweth's style then it likely screws us. We don't have the quality of defensive dman that the canes do.

I'm thinking that the head coach is responsible for the style of play and the defensive coach is responsible for implementing it, so I'm not sure it's his style per se.

Looking at his resume it looks pretty good. Maybe Tavares put a good word in for him before they hired him since he was an assistant there during his rookie years.

Canes fans liked him but my only question is why did the Canes let him go (gave him permission to talk to other teams) ? I can see that if he were looking for a head coach job but this is a lateral move.

Think someone in here said he was seeing if he could get more money somewhere else.

Tbf I don't think any pk was stopping that pp.

I removed that comment thinking it could have been vs Florida but I just checked and the Lightning scored 7 PP goals (3 in game #4) in 5 games.

No big deal, IIRC he was a hard nosed player so maybe that will rub off on some of our Dmen.

Likely money. Dundon/Waddell put a value on things and if a person is deemed replaceable, then they will let that person leave. The more important a person is (Waddell in his case, Brind'Amour, Aho, etc...), the more the owner is willing to budge to keep them, but the less important a guy is (or if the team feels the guy is replaceable), they won't budge.

Some view that as cheap, and to an extent it is, but it's also probably the right way to run a team in a small market. Do I want the team paying 6 figures for a radio announcer? or spending 6 figures more on player salaries.

Reports are that Chynoweth wanted more money. Brindy used the leverage of his contract to get more for all the assistants, trainers, etc...but Dean wanted to explore his options looking for a better deal, and he got one.

I don't think this has anything to do with his performance, more that I think the team (management and head coach) thinks that he's not irreplaceable. Maybe they'll be right, maybe they'll be wrong. I don't blame either party here.

Canes ownership has rumors of being a bit tight around the purse, especially for front office expenditure.

This reads like MLSE flexing it's financial muscles to nab an asset

Carolina is very aggressive on the PK and likes to counterattack with Aho and Necas. So I don't think Marner's minutes are going to be pulled back.

Well thats just great, more delay of game penalties. Hopefully they can get him to stop that and just fire it down the ice

Every team tried to do the 1 3 1 setup saved for Washington. But you need 3 world class shooters like Tampa has to make it work.

Yea, that's one of things that keeps biting us on the ass.

I ve always loked mcginn
He was definitely overpaid on his last contract, I believe his cap hit was 2.1 million. If we can sign him for 1-1.25 per, he’d be a good addition.

Some may argue though we have something similar in our organization already in Joey Anderson who needs a shot to prove himself. He’d also be a cheaper option.

A part of me also wants to see a younger 4th line that brings more energy and is hungrier to stick in the lineup and be noticed. Something like Anderson - Brooks - Spezza.

If he'd sign for 1-1.25M, I would think he'd remain in Carolina. I think someone is going to pay him more than he's worth. Foegele is a guy that is probably being a bit undervalued by the Canes management though, but somewhat understandably as they don't have a spot in the top 6 for him and he wants that. He's been the 4th best 5v5 scorer on Carolina over the past 3 years, and on par with Nino and Svechnikov.

Aside from Dougie Hamilton who I’d love for the Leafs to sign, another good Ontario native addition for the bottom six would be Brock McGinn from Carolina.
Definitely on my wish list. I'd rather move out a contract for Foegle. Since some bodies need to leave. But McGinn should definitely be on our radar. High motor player

On Chynoweth's resume, does he have a bullet that says "Coached the defensive structure that beat the Toronto Maple Leafs while we had a Zamboni driver in net"

Because that would be a heck of a statement right there....
