We still need to extend Bunting and Samsonov too tho. Thankfully the entire D-corps is set to come back minus Holl.

He actually did tho lol...
He didnt. He was offside
Marner fed him at least another three gimmees and he shots them into the goalies chest. Kerfoot hasnt yet learned you cant put the puck through the goalie

Yea, this is why we got him for so CHEAP actually.

A recent suspected blocked shot foot injury probably brought his value down a bit (although these are almost never nagging) plus being one of the most unlucky players in the league on a bad Blues team this year was the perfect storm to pick up a playoff warrior like him (went PPG just last playoffs) with Acciari (by far the forward hits leader with the Blues) and at 75%! retention leaving room for yet another big move.

Couple of fun facts.

Ozone starts this year among all 153 centers with 500+ 5v5 minutes:

O'Reilly: 32.78% (9th fewest in the NHL)

Despite being buried in Dzone starts and facing among the highest QoC among centers (the matchup guy against the other teams best players night in night out) as well, he still holds a +3.87 xGF% REL....plus hes an elite faceoff guy.

I dont think people realize he's actually been quite good this season with the double whammy of being unlucky on a bad team.

Just compare Tarasenko to him. 63.74% zone starts (highest on the blues) and -.89 xGF% REL.

Exactly the guy I wanted this season and somehow theres room for another piece.

I was dreading a Kane trade overpay but feel really good now. Anyone who want more bottom 6 jam and playoff-winning pedigree should be very happy. Love we got them early too so we can develop chemistry before the playoffs.

Not sure if you're against this deal but I can tell you don't like trading picks.

The thing with trading picks, especially first rounders, is to do it when you believe your team can go deep. Pretty sure if the Leafs win their first round (finally!!), they will go deep. It will energize them and make them believe in themselves.

I'm ok with trading firsts in the next few years because this is a great team but so far has stalled in the playoffs. Those firsts are the pieces we use to trade for the help we need.

If not all in now, when?
I would have went on the assumption we missed the boat, and Traded Mathews for a boatload. As you say I would have never traded the past 1st rd picks either, I have always stated that since before the Kessel fiasco anyway. Our GM’s are impatient, MLSE will say they are impatient because the fans are. I’m just saying not all fans are the this year is it we have to go all in year, every year it seems. Boston will be tougher than Tampa anyway.

Agree, He is great, and plays physical playoff style of hockey. Could be an important piece come playoff time.

Overall solid trade, price was a bit high, but this is the year I would expect Kyle to go all in. He got this year, that's it.

1st round pick
2nd round pick
4th round pick

Wish we didn't waste 1st round pick on Folignos of the world.
You need a couple of ELC players on your roster to help with the CAP situation.
Bergeron drafted 45th Krecji 63rd Marchand 71st

With a load of good luck late 1st round pick can still be Pasta.
The Foligno trade made sense at the time. That was the kind of player the team needed that season. If he didn't get hurt and miss most of that series we wouldn't still be talking about it years later.

ROR is the best rental to get for playoffs and Toronto did it. Even if I think they need dmen before offense, I think they will be deadline top 3 winners with that move.

If another team offered him his 9.5, we would get 2 1sts, 2nd, 3rd. Not bad considering we had him for a playoff run. That being said I wouldn’t do it anyway, I think his qualifying offer is 10.
In order to get meirer it would cost us thise same draft oucks plus instead if 2 non roster players with no upside it would cost 2 of knies/nielma/robertson/sandin

Those draft picks may never be as good as our top 4 prospects

I think this bodes very well for a re-sign.....

So does this mean, Toronto could be a family choice for his next contract?

It's too bad he's only made $76mm.

Still needs a retirement contract ... :sarcasm:

If I had to chose between Bunting and O'Rielly, I'd make my decision after the playoffs.

One thing that seems lost in all of this, which to me is kind of impressive, is that not once has Dubas given up a young piece that anyone sees as key futures.

Every single year you hear HF go on about “it starts with X, Y,Z” yet he never gives those parts. Literally you can read in the speculation for ROR thread people going on about 1st, Knies, 1 of Sandin/Liljegren….LOL. Still have Knies, Robertson, Niemela etc.

Kerfoot couldnt finish when marner was feeding him gimmees
Kerfoot is a guy who seems to excel in a 3rd line role, but is absolutely awful when playing in the top 6. Guessing it comes down to strength of opponents. He's a good winger who can produce 40-45 points. Not a bad guy to have on your 3rd line.

The Kessel 1st. round picks were completely unknown, coming from a bad team, without protection.

I suspect if we see next year's pick it would be top X protected.

Leafs picks today are post core replacements, so if the current core can't get it done, it'll just be another period of suckage.

Noticed that ROR and Acciari led the Blues in PK TOI so that's a another plus (though STL is 24th in PK%)

As much as I like Bunting, he is replaceable.

Selke winner like ROR isn't, if he is healthy to play and contribute you gotta find a way to re-sign him.

Love this trade. isn't RoR basically the best 3rd line C in the league along with being the best defensive C not named Bergeron? Give it a rest dudes.

If Dubas can somehow find a way to add Max Domi and Jake McCabe while shipping out Kerfoot this would be as happy with the Leafs as I've been in my 40 year lifespan

This trade is very confusing for Minnesota.

They move Pillar (2021 4th round pick) for a 4th round pick and retain salary?

What is the incentive to include Pillar?

I don't think Bill Guerin has any idea what he's doing, seems like a guy who just fell into this.

Leafs fans for the most part love their own.
We love average David Kampf our shutdown centre...well guess what?
Instead of closing games with David Kampf who might be the 40-50th best shutdown centre. ROR is in the discussion after Bergeron as a top 5.

Having a guy that can kill penalties and be an elite faceoff guy is massive.

The ideal player to me is a guy who plays when you need a goal or are protecting a lead. On a PK or PP.
O'Reilly is a guy for all occasions.
