That's only part of it.

It cost a 1st and 2nd to get a double retained ROR with a $1.875 million cap hit instead of $7.5 million.
I’m GM of Leafs I do this

Gotta try and win

Leafs pay with not many picks but I get it

Loved Acciari at Providence College then Bruins - excellent bottom 6 guy

2023 1st round pick (TOR)
2023 3rd round pick (OTT)
2024 2nd round pick (TOR)
2025 4th round pick (TOR)

Also if people think dumping 3-5 picks every year to fix previous mistakes & at the deadline is some master stroke by Dubas they're fooling themselves.
You're mad about trading picks to bolster a roster that has a chance to contend for the Cup?

We just got a guy who can play top 6 wing, top 6 center or 3rd line shutdown center. A guy who has won the Selke and Conn Smythe. With 75% of his salary retained. And you're upset about trading picks that will mostly amount to nothing? They didn't give up a single roster player! Look at our depth!

Not to mention we got a banger in Acciari who brings a much needed element to the bottom 6.

Are you just angry for the sake of being angry? This is a move that contenders make.

Giving up a lottery pick is really going to bite them. :sarcasm:

Tarasenko is the picture of health.

Both born in 1991

This trade is very confusing for Minnesota.

They move Pillar (2021 4th round pick) for a 4th round pick and retain salary?

What is the incentive to include Pillar?

Those who are saying that ROR isn't the player he was in 2019 when he won the Conn Smythe should take note of how well Giordano is playing for us. Yeah, he's not the Norris Trophy winner he was in 2019, but he has been a great addition for us. And ROR is 7 years younger than Gio. Some players beyond their peak years can still contribute greatly to an already elite team.

He's a throw in/throw away. The Leafs had to get something in return for their 4th, so Minny are sending a prospect they had no intention of signing, (just like the Leafs).

was thinking they could be clearing up space on their reserves but nope they had 28 spots before the trade

I'll admit a few days ago I kind of wanted Dubas to avoid ROR based on the price speculated but this is a fantastic trade. ROR was great last year, and his problems this year are more team based it seems. He gives us so many options. Matthews, JT, ROR, Kampf can run against anybody. Don't need to explain ROR because we know the resume.
Acciari is a great add too and someone I wanted for the bottom 6. Plays playoff hockey.
The price paid is appropriate too
I don't think we are done either. I think another meaninful move will come and wouldn't surprise me if it's up front again.

Ya, it was probably Minnesota's choice of who to send our way.

He's obviously cooked. I mean, he's a full 7 months older than Calle Jarnkrok! lol

And he was a Bruin killer in the finals.

I swear some people see the beard and think he's the same age as Gio (39).

He's 9 months younger than Erik Karlsson who has had a resurgence after multiple down years. People were saying he was done, and now he's the likely Norris trophy winner.

Small fun fact
ROR brought the Stanley Cup to his Grandmothers LTC home in Chesley Ontario.
Back to Ontario where his roots are might help with a value resign.

I wonder if we could take the $$$ we were going to offer Bunting to sign ROR for similar?
We should make it a priority to re-sign both players. These are the types of players you NEED in order to win the Stanley Cup.

I guess the 24 and 25 1sts are still there to be dealt away before he leaves. Lol!

The we have to win a round narrative is particularly sad, win a round big whup.
Not sure if you're against this deal but I can tell you don't like trading picks.

The thing with trading picks, especially first rounders, is to do it when you believe your team can go deep. Pretty sure if the Leafs win their first round (finally!!), they will go deep. It will energize them and make them believe in themselves.

I'm ok with trading firsts in the next few years because this is a great team but so far has stalled in the playoffs. Those firsts are the pieces we use to trade for the help we need.

If not all in now, when?

I think he has to be signed by this June?
His stats aren't great.
Does this satisfy a NHL requirement for there to be an exchange of assets to legitimize a trade?

Agreed. Huge overpayment that now prevents the leafs from making other more pressing deals. At least he could have dumped the useless Kerfoot or Engvall to make room for future acquisitons.
How do you know he is done
Take a chill pill and wait until deadline is done before crying chicken little

BLUES: For Blues fans who don't know much about you because you've spent your whole career in the Eastern Conference, what would you tell them about the player they're getting?

ACCIARI:
I'm a heavy player. I'll finish every check. I'll do my best to block every shot in the D-zone. Anything I need to do to help the team, I'm gonna do. That's the kind of player I am - I'll stick up for guys, do whatever I need to do. I can play up and down the lineup, so whatever they need me for, I'll be ready. I can play center, left wing, right wing, anything - I'll even drive the Zamboni if I need to. Wherever I am in the lineup, I'm going to bring the same game I do every night.
This guy is an underrated gem. He's everything I hoped ZAR would be and isn't. Hope we can re-sign him in the summer.

Looks like ROR should play his 1000th game in a Leafs jersey all being well

I know he is RFA. I should clarify what I meant by rental. Chances of the Leafs keeping Meier beyond this season are extremely remote so they probably would have to move him in the summer. So, in essence, he's a rental.
If another team offered him his 9.5, we would get 2 1sts, 2nd, 3rd. Not bad considering we had him for a playoff run. That being said I wouldn’t do it anyway, I think his qualifying offer is 10.

With regards to the picks.

It just means another day where we don't have to worry about the Leafs screwing up the draft!

But honestly, when did you expect these picks to make their debut into the NHL?

It would be 2026-2028. Leafs aren't picking in the top 20.

Now, it could be at that point they are extremely valuable because Leafs might have none of marner, Matthews, Nylander or Tavares. They could all have left for brighter futures.

All Leafs would have at that point is about $45mm in capspace.

So, yes those picks are valuable assets ...

Let's just live in the now.

Further point, even if they keep it and draft a guy like Mintin, it's still gonna take 2-3 years at least of good development to see them in the NHL.

Nice to grab Acciari too. I always liked that f***er when he was with Boston and Florida last year too. We've got a some nice center depth now.

Still have cap space and assets to go for another big fish.

Agree, He is great, and plays physical playoff style of hockey. Could be an important piece come playoff time.

Overall solid trade, price was a bit high, but this is the year I would expect Kyle to go all in. He got this year, that's it.

1st round pick
2nd round pick
4th round pick

Wish we didn't waste 1st round pick on Folignos of the world.
You need a couple of ELC players on your roster to help with the CAP situation.
Bergeron drafted 45th Krecji 63rd Marchand 71st

With a load of good luck late 1st round pick can still be Pasta.
