You just described every GM at the deadline
Not true at all, most teams augment their core players. Dubas tries to find those heart and soul guys, cause their core players don’t have it. That being said, they have a legit shot this year, so he better just go “all in”.

Agreed. Huge overpayment that now prevents the leafs from making other more pressing deals. At least he could have dumped the useless Kerfoot or Engvall to make room for future acquisitons.

I think they should have dumped Kerfoot on the offseason, but now it’s pretty tricky to move him and upgrade. His only real value is in a 3 way trade where a non-contending team retains half his salary. Also, I think Dubas just likes him a lot more than I do… so he’s probably here for the playoffs.

Augmenting the core is literally the same thing that was originally said.

I'll be honest, Pillar is the definition of a player given up as Future Considerations. I'm sure the Leafs like him just enough that he can maybe have some form of value to the org though.
What is the scoop on Pillar?

Did Minnesota retain and give up Pillar for a 4th?

No idea. ROR was a beast when he won the Cup but has been kinda meh ever since. This is one of those trades I'll be taking a wait and see approach so I can play rear view mirror genius analyst.

Leafs got some other player last year in a similar manner at the trade deadline. Can’t recall his name. It’ll be the same with this guy next year.

So what I’m most curious about is where does ROR play?

Do you see him on the wing on 2nd line? Or centering 3rd line?
I’d love to see him start on the third line. Maybe have him and Jarnkrok together at least. It would finally allow our bottom 6 to have some scoring capability. Will also make it very difficult for teams to match up against our top 3 centres.

If he goes on the wing in the top 6 it definitely makes them harder to play against, but we will still Struggle offensively if Kampf is at 3C

Low to average skill, very physical player that moves around pretty well. He's suffered a lot of injuries over the last couple years and just came back to the lineup recently.

If by meh ever since you mean really good, and unlucky/on a bad team this year, then yes.

Dubas has pushed in his chips. Does he make this trade if he is not a lame duck GM ??

I hate giving up 4 picks but I do like the players but would have been hesitant to make this move given we have to go through Tampa and Boston just to get out of the Atlantic.

We now need to get by Tampa (minimum) or Dubas and Keefe are done. Shanny probably stays to pick up the pieces.
this move looks more like a it's cup or bust for Dubie to keep his job

You have to give value to acquire value. There were obviously competing offers that Toronto had to beat in order to acquire these guys. What did you think it would take to acquire a Conn Smythe + Selke winner?

With this trade, the Leafs acquire a top 6 forward who can center a 3rd line as well to spread out our offense. They also acquire a bottom 6 banger who brings an element that we are lacking. Retained at 75% is going to give the Leafs flexibility to acquire another piece that will help in another area. They did all this without giving up any roster depth.

How anyone can be upset with this is beyond me.
