Matthews just doesn't seem to be able to find that extra gear this year. Usually he builds so much momentum from scoring early and often but that hasn't happened for the most part.
He had 7 goals and 14 points last season after his first 14 games.

Hopefully he picks it up soon.

This team has popcap offense this season. They very rarely score more than 3 goals, are one of the lowest scoring teams in the NHL overall and on 5 on 5. Not good enough, it's not.

I've been saying for a while now that despite all their talent the Leafs still have trouble scoring consistently alot of the time. It seems like we're missing someone who can finish even when they're getting really good scoring chances.

If you keep your shots to 19 in regulation, you shouldn't be giving up 3 goals in regulation, idc who's fault it is. That's pathetic,

I will never like Kallgren, people can preach to me, "It's NOT his fault" until they're blue in the face. HE sucks. The end.

On the one hand Kallgren has been kinda unlucky with how the team has played in front of him alot of the time. I mean its not like they're mostly playing amazing in front of him and he's losing game after game for the team. On the otherhand Kallgren has had alot of ups and downs in his play. Sometimes he's looked really good and then other times he's looked average to bad.

I wouldn't mind giving Petruzzelli a start or two and see how he does considering Kallgren isn't playing lights out.

Rielly's not the main culprit on the OT goal against but he certainly isn't a strength back there. Usually something has gone wrong up ice and he's just the fire drill.
Gotta trust your teammates. If they turn the puck over in many OTs or even during many games and he gets caught then how is he the problem when he's just playing within the system we have in place where the D gets heavily involved on the rush/offence.

Thought they were crap until the Marner goal - Kallgren was the only reason that was a close game up until that moment.

After the Kallgren save on Carrier, I would have taken a point then.

Felt like they were hanging in there okay but it was more of the Carolina game than the Boston game in terms of control of play. The shift that led to the Marner goal was probably the only shift where the Leafs played the way they ideally want to. But by now, I think we can look at Dubas' design of possession skill dominating another team with skill and physical advantages as a flawed game plan.

He was on his man, Matthews was on the puck and Marner went for a skate wide and let his man just easily cut into the middle?
I get it
But as a d man you have to anticipate better and be the rescue valve in case something happens like that
No matter 3 on 3 4 on 4 or whatever
Your job is to anticipate

By the way i Know why he cheated there a bit which unfortunately cost him and us , he thought it was going the other way and he was going to change

It’s all good
Really
Shit happens

Pretty incredible how awful he's looked on 2-on-1s for several years now.

Take the pass, leave the goalie the shot. He tries to take away both, and ends up stopping neither.
It's basic fundamentals, if he doesn't get it by know he never will

I hope he breaks out soon but we have to stop looking at last year for patterns. I might be wrong, but the whole idea is to break out of patterns.

Feels like he's just a guy who was brought up on defensively poor teams and has relied on his pure athleticism to play the position. The reads and instincts just aren't there and he's not a calming presence. He just wants to run with the forwards.

How is it embarrassing that the best team in the league is better than us? They are literally the best team in the league…
No kidding. My entire point is it’s a discrace that a 5 year old team is routinely better then our storied franchise. If they can do it why can’t we

Because starting from a blank slate where teams literally threw loads of picks and prospects at them gave them an unfair advantage over literally everyone. It’s no surprise that the expansion draft was much different the 2nd time around.

It sure looked like all three bet on Vegas winning the game!!! And, there is NO WAY Rielly is a true number one D-man! He is brain-dead out there at times and has POOR SITUATIONAL awareness too f***ing often!!!
As long as he’s our number one D man we’re not winning anything!

That may be true but only 10 of the original players remain. Their management have done a very good job going forward

They literally made the biggest trade in the league in years with the main pieces being one of the original 1sts and a player dealt to them, both to discourage an expansion selection. They’re still reaping the benefits of that expansion draft.

I hopectgrres some big time changes on the roster for next game

Out
47
12
62
38

15 to the 3rd

In
Steeves
Anderson
Gaudette
Another Dman

Go get a top 6 legit LWer !!!!!!!
It’s been since I don’t even know when we had a real top 6 LWer

think jordie benn should be good to go in a bit

would try to move

engvall (2.25M)+holl (2M)+kerfoot (3.5M) OUT (total:7.75M)

all are pending UFAs and not impact players for the Leafs anyway.

top6 LW would cost picks (1st or couple 2nd rounders or top prospects) which I am not comfortable parting with at least for this season.

Also not a lot of decent wingers available who are pending UFAs anyway

I wouldn't mind flipping engvall+holl+kerfoot and then using what we got to change the look of the roster. If we have to add then we can add anything that is not a 1st, 2nd round pick, top prospect. I'd be fine with adding our 3rd rnd pick as long as the return seems decent if not then I'd rather shore up some picks in case Willy or Matthews or both walk. We need something in the bank for the future.

Its not like kerfoot+holl+engvall are really important for us anyway

Diamond? It's man on man and there can't be a diamond with only 3 skaters...

Anyways, doesn't matter. Leafs beat themselves, but anybody that doesn't feel better about this team now compared to a week ago is kidding themselves. Clean up the brain farts and get another defenseman if Muzzin isn't coming back to push Sandin/Holl to #7.
Unfortunately, it's been six years of the same players doing the brain farts. As good as marner can look, why is he so bad 3 on 3? Don't think it's going to change.
