He's mostly paired with a minimum wage newbie. Probably not another team in the league that does this to their #1 D-man.

High quality number one defensemen can help stabilize any quality of partner for a length of time. Notice how when Muzzin was good and healthy he really put Holl on the map, or how Brodie has quieted down Holl's struggles as well. Rielly is a chaotic defender who doesn't really do that for his partners. He still kinda needs a safer partner out there. In ideal circumstances, he's a strong number 2.

Matthews has checked out of the hotel. He is so done with Toronto it is not even funny. He wants a trade, that is why he is playing so badly. he is going to be lucky to score 15 goals this season at this point.
that might be a good assumption but on the flip side of the coin how does he expect to be the league's highest player when scoring just 15 goals a season

tanking on purpose would be self-sabotage, he'd be hurting his own value

but wow he was in la-la land on that overtime goal. Totally daydreaming

if he continues to play like this long term then he can forget about being the league's highest player, he'll be lucky to get even half of what he will be asking for

5/6 against the 3 best teams in the NHL is very good

So many defensive lapses this game, though. We gave them every single goal except the bounce on #3 (which Rielly played awfully)
Their short-handed goal? Tavares got the puck just over the blueline and just passed it to their man. Not even pressured.

Teams seem to have figured out that a bit of pressure makes us cough up the puck.

A pretty good 4 days

5 of 6 points in 4 days against that level of competition is excellent, especially with how we were playing beforehand

Some pretty egregious mistakes from of our young defenseman lead to goals but that's going to happen with inexperienced players from time to time

All in all I'm feeling much better and more satisfied than I was 10 days ago, that's for damn sure

Blues keep losing now is probably a time to see what is the asking price for Tarasenko and if he can be had for Kerfoot+Engvall+2nd/3rd or something...

no 1st round picks or top prospects (Robertson, abruzzese, knies).

I might consider throwing in Robertson or abruzzese if blues were willing to trade both ROR+Tarasenko (both pending UFAs) with retention. Would be a hardsell though b/c someone else might play a lot more than leafs

I'd be interested in checking in on Parayko, though his new contract might not be so great.

Rangers, Lightning, Buffalo and Ottawa all losing which is good.

4 goals 20 shotsI am proven right AGAIN Kallgren is trash
A perfect example of how just looking at the stats can't compare to actually watching the game.

Sure, four goals on twenty shots looks terrible. But two were in breakaways, and he stopped one but the defence didn't clear it, and the others were on a two-on-one and a three-on-one.

In the first period alone, we gave up a 3-on-2, a 3-on-1, a 2-on-1 and a breakaway (not counting Kessel's that was called dead for a penalty).

I really don't understand blaming Kallgren for the loss.

lmao

Why is this blatant trolling and pretending to be a Leaf fan allowed on our board?

Good question, as if the main boards and all hockey media combined, we have to endure ths nonsense as well

But yes disappointing loss and some sloppy play Sandin = the new Holl

It's man on man, not zone coverage. Rielly was staying near his man while Marner completely goofed and was nowhere near any Golden Knight player let alone the guy he was supposed to be covering.
Man on man d for 3 on 3? You learn hockey from a moron?

Kallgren stopped 3-4 odd man rushes against throughout the game. He gave them a good enough chance to win.
didnt watch the full game, just caught highlights, Not sure why guys are shitting on Kallgren. Got Nylander looking like Bambi on ice on that game tying goal on the blue line. Was there a sniper in the top back corner of SBA tonight?

Then on the OT goal you got Smith making our guys on the blue line look like pylons.

This board has its lack of patience for the young guys. I remember defending Hyman for years listening to all the "hes got no finish, cry cry cry" but they'd completely forget how much he worked his ass off and got better and look at him now.

Gotta have patience, this is who we have for now till Murray comes back whenever tf that is. Deal with it.

We got 7/8 points out of this so far, take the point and move on to the next game.

Disappointment.

Outplayed them just gave them freebies.

15 Giveaways tonight, we are now 6th worst in the league at giveaways per game, with the Habs being the worst at 11.46. Not just the giveaways either, but odd man rushes. We defend pretty well in our own zone, limit shot chances, but the giveaways and odd man rushes results in significant higher danger opportunities. We really need to work on these mental mistakes. Tonight wasn’t on Kallgren, it’s on the freebies.

By the way, giveaway king tonight was Engvall, with three, though none of his resulted in goals.

Disappointing, gave the game away on careless and sloppy plays. Left Kallgren out to dry far too much.

Sloppy and careless is exactly how I'd describe it and not just this game, that's how I'd define the season so far. Just a lot of loosey-goosey stick handling, passes into skates, etc. Very weird because that's not normally this team. They need to tighten up...everything. Even Tavares' game winner against Carolina was a sloppy mess - Robertson bobbled the puck and somehow retains it and slides it through to Marner who then bobbles it but somehow retains it and makes a beautiful pass for the goal. 99 times out of 100 that puck gets swept away by the defenders but they scored so there's no lesson learned. If I was Keefe I'd be talking a lot about details next practice.

This sums it up.

As many have said. At least we know what to work on now as a team.

And now we know we ACTUALLY have a team still - We were basement about a week ago, now we’re back on top off the wins of top teams.

Our star center is still finding his groove and we got a 3rd string goalie holding up his end.

Someone tell chicken little it ain’t falling yet.

Go leafs gooooooooo

Just terrible TK was/is top 3 for me and probably 1st n my soul .
He was literally ah inspiring , so talented in all areas …

RiP 🪦 TK

I still remember watching them effectively breaking up live on Good Rockin' Tonite while being interviewed by Terry David Mulligan. Weird that it happened on a Canadian show. I love their style of jazzy rock (similar to BST).

Engvall is my least favorite leaf. He’s just useless out there - soft, plays with zero intensity, inconsistant, doesn’t finish checks and IMO adds nothing of real value. He’s a big, strong, fast guy but has no motor.

Matthews is horrible this season as well. Last year, he established himself as a star and played both ends of the ice. This year, he’s just going through the motions and I have no idea why, nor do I plan to speculate.

I did watch the game, I'm just not giving him any slack because he's almost always bad.

I can count the number of good games he's had in his career om 1 hand with fingers left over.

until that changes he will not her, nor does je deserve any slack

so even if it's not his fault it's his fault until he earns some slack.
