Hallander was a second round pick. So he traded a second and a 7th for McCann. If he loses McCann in the expansion draft it would be fair to surmise that it was to protect Kerfoot. That is terrible asset management because we still don’t know what Hallander will be.
Or it's awesome asset management because we still don't know what Hallander will be.

You think there was " elite asset management" involved in the trade.
I do, he basically capped the teams expansion losses at Hallander + 7th. If Seattle takes McCann then that’s the price obviously. Now, if they take Kerfoot then McCann is the replacement. Who cares if they left two similar players exposed over another one guy? You only lose one guy regardless unless you make a side deal.

He's a #4 in my eyes. Can log the minutes, play PK, but you don't want him carrying the pair.

Either way, a top 4 replacement isn't coming in at 2M year like Holl makes and that's valuable.
Understood, but I wonder if Igor Ozhiganov would play a more complete game under Keefe than Babcock. Is he available?

I disagreed. I just thought it was good asset management. A minor trade.

I think they're going to take McCann instead of Kerfoot. McCann is younger, team controlled and more productive. The only knock on him is that he doesn't kill penalties and Kerfoot does

But you just told us how you were so right about the Leafs wasting those ELC years?

Were you right or not?

Because those were Lou years, not dubas years.

I said the Leafs had the most depth then. It includes having guys like Gardiner too when Dubas was in charge, which was another year where people were saying this core has a decade together and there was nothing to worry about. As it turned out, Dubas made things even worse to the point where now the Leafs have zero depth. As seen by the protection list.

You realize the Leafs lost Brendan Leipsic in the last expansion draft right? They've exposed far better players this time around

If I’m picking….

Frank Vatrano - Janni Gourde - Josh Bailey
Alex Kerfoot - Chris Tierney - Paul Byron
Andreas Athanasiou - Tyler Johnson - Jonas Donskoi
Zach Aston-Reese - Nick Cousins - Christian Fischer

Mark Giordano - Dylan Demelo
Jake Bean - Haydn Fleury
Vince Dunn - Jeremy Lauzon

Chris Drieger
Kaapo Kahkonen

Extra forwards - Tyler Benson, Jonah Gadjovick, Nathan Bastian, Julien Gauthier, Ryan Donato, Adam Gaudette, Adam Mascherin

Extra defensemen - Dennis Cholowski, Robert Hagg, Gabriel Carlson, William Burgen

Extra goalie - Vitelli Vanicek
\\

That's an impressive defence. Keep in mind, as with the Knights, the Kraken cannot keep all 31 players on their roster, unless the rest are ineligible for the waiver wire.

You said the leafs shouldn't have wasted those prime ELC years!

But Lou did just that!

And now Dubas is exposing much better players than Lou even protected! Cuz depth!

Personally I thought they were going 7-3-1 after the trade and they would let the Kracken pick between Dermott and Holl. I’m good though if they take a forward. Maybe they think there are more ufa options up front

Could Dubas have a deal for Kerfoot with Arizona if he hasn't been selected by Seattle?
He is only owed $750,000 for 2021-22, for a team with an internal salary cap speculated at $65 million he could be very interesting.
Arizona is said to be interested in moving Kuemper and Garland.

McCann may have been traded for to be used
as bait for Seattle.

All came down to Holl. Leafs like him and they dont want to lose a R D.
All hope is lost for Lilygren .. if they liked him, he would have been up already and they would have made holl available.

They like Holl - thats what this all came down to and didnt want to lose him. Thus trading for McCan and giving Vegas the option of him or Kerfoot and the Leafs are just happy to keep one of those two and Holl - and call it a day.

Like the idea, problem is if Lilly can't handle top 4 mins then you are in real trouble. At least with Holl you know what you have with him and has played in top 4 whether you like him or not, he's done a decent job.

I think best case scenario coming out of the ED draft now is that Seattle gives us an IOU for taking Hakstol from us and takes Dermott.

Gives Toronto 7.915m to fill out the rest of the roster, which to me is plenty of space to find a solid winger, 6th/7th dman and backup. Now whether that lineup is good enough to compete and play hard in the playoffs is another story.

Ya its clear Lilgren isnt in their plans. Leafs made progress on the back end so dont want to go backwards losing Holl who they know what he is and giving an unknown Lilgren minutes which will likelt backfire. Thus the deal for Mccan, giving Vegas the option of Mccan, Kerfoot, Dermott. Leafs took the conservative approach here as they liked Holl and were willing to lose Kerfoot bc Mccan there and vise versa. Losing Demort would be home run scenario.

Id look to trade Mikeyev. Cant stand watching him. Reminds me of a house league player

In my opinion this team is not in the position to take the " safe approach."

Barring some blockbuster deal Dubas manufactures, I think you're about right with this lineup and it's...a slight regression from last year. My biggest fear is those first 3 X's you show are filled in with THO.

Ideally you’d want a player like Holl on the bottom pair.
Ideally we find a #4 RHD and we can pair Holl with Sandin/Dermott. That’s a lot smarter and safer than pairing them with unproven Lily. And at 2 mil for Holl, that’s in line with what the bottom pair should be.

I’m no fan of Dubas, but protecting the D at this point is the smart move.

If Campbell plays to his contract, we need all 11 AAV players to play above contract to get anywhere.

And we still wont beat Tampa.

I heard Kucherov got injured by the Stanley Cup and is out to start the year. Apparently rehab is going much slower than expected. Might be out all year again.
