Post-Game Talk: Leafs Eliminated.

It is clear as day. How can you NOT see it cross the line?

Again, it has to be conclusive, you do not see it clear cut crossing the line, or is it just your assumption… do you really think this is even debatable when they took 7 mins to review it ?

In fact, let’s say it was, that’s an easy GI as Reilly pushes bobs pad just as he skates across, would have been called off for GI anyways most likely. Regardless they tied it up anyway and went to OT, they didn’t lose the game in that play.

Stop making excuses for this group and always playing victim. Other teams go through the same stuff

Even the TV schedule in these playoffs tell the story unless you're an idiot. Solutions for the obvious league imbalance:

Slash revenue sharing

Increase salary cap

Stop the madness.

Yup!

Avs did the re-tool and got Rantanen, Makar (other peices) out of it.

Tavares is an albatross of a contract so Leafs gotta ride it until he is off the books and use that time to re-tool/re-build.

IMO they definitely need to unload Marner, his attitude is garbage. Matthews if he wants anything north of 12 AAV and is not willing to commit before July 1st then he can go as well.

We can't be bending over backwards for players that refuse to show up in the post season. We need a new look and a new vision.

And it starts by looking at new Gm and new coach ASAP and making quick decisions before July 1st.

100%

Glad most feel this way.

Anyone who still wants Marner or Matthews after this performance is a bandwagon fan. Who will cheer for anyone in a leafs jersey.

No more bending backwards for players is spot on.

We created entitled brats. Matthews and Marner needed to be trader years ago when they tried to take Dubas and bend him over.

They would be humbled in a different hockey market. No purses and Mickey Mouse marner shirts

Shanny needs to have accountability this time. No more cliche and cookie cutter responses

The TV schedule has nothing to do with our embarrassing effort in game 3 and terrible mistakes in games 1 and 2.

Not the Leafs mistakes but the league's priority is clearly propping up their meagre revenue generating southern franchises. Personally, I don't want to subsidize other people's success at my own expense.

and hopefully we get a coach that holds players accountable and doesn't do takesy backsy. Keefe did it for one game, Marner threw a hissy fit and then he was apologising in the media.

lame duck coach

Need a good GM to do it. Dubas ain't that.

That is conclusive in the video. What isn't conclusive is how good your eyes are.

So you want to trade a 25 year old elite scorer who's not even in his prime for picks and younger players with the hope one of them can turn into him?

Matthews is the one core player who actually knows how to play along the boards, hit and take hits. He just needs to be surrounded by skilled guys who can do the same. The issue is more Marner, and Tavares. They need to replace those guys with better skaters who can play tough. The skating and being able to take a hit became huge again in these playoffs. Someone needs to open up the ice for Matthews. If you look at these playoffs Tkachuck did nothing and neither did Barkov.
Yes he is in his prime. He's not going to get even better.

Most don't want to trade him just for the sake of it (though some do, and I understand the sentiment). Most want to trade him because the reality is that he's had seven playoffs to prove he's an elite performer and hasn't done it while being paid 11M, and there is genuine and legitimate concern about expecting him to suddenly do so contract which will take him to the age of 34 and will likely cost $15 million a year. Or, the potentially catastrophic outcome of losing him for nothing which looms just a year away.

Mostly it's just about proper asset management. You need to make sure you get appropriate value for salary in a cap world, and when faced with the prospect of losing assets, you need to ensure you receive an appropriate return.

For the most part you're right that he knows how to take a hit, can bump in the corners, can steal pucks and play well defensively, that's great but it hasnt amounted to anything in the long run. And for the most part we pay him to score key goals when we need them, and he's been almost non-existent in that area for years. For whatever reason, he just can't find the shooting lanes that he finds in the regular season and it completely kills us. It happens year after year after year.

We already know that it's not working. It's time to try something new.

There is no conspiracy in the NHL. IMO it's game management to blame.
I dont think its a conspiracy, i think its a defensive position the league takes trying to be ultra cautious with the Leafs. Year after year our series see limited Pp opportunities compared to the rest of the league. The threshold for penalties and game altering plays is different in our series than others

I don't recall seeing a team dominating faceoffs as much as the Leafs did this series and still being handled easily in 5 losing all 3 of its home games. And their puck possession was through the roof. This series was a perfect illustration of the over-emphasis on puck possession. Give me a contest between two similar teams in terms of compete, use of the ice and quality of goaltending then I bet puck possession does pick the winner 9 times out of 10. But when one team has the puck possession but is always taking it to the outside away from the danger areas and willingly gives up possession if threatened with contact, it means zilch to dominate on faceoffs and puck possession.
The other thing is, unless I'm mistaken, expected goals only takes into consideration the type of shot and the distance, and maybe the location as well. It says nothing about whether it's point blank or how many bodies are in front and what teams those bodies are on. That makes a huge difference and I think the Leafs expected goals the last few years have been greatly inflated if expected goals don't take bodies in front into account.

Slash revenue sharing

Stop the madness.

Revenue sharing keeps the bottom floating.

An increase is silly the economically challenged will only demand more revenue sharing to help them keep up. What makes sense is a luxury tax.

The madness is here to stay, as soon as they got into bed with the bookies it was all over for anything resembling a square game. It's going to provide the league with tremendous revenue and will have them dug out of the Covid hole in no time flat, let's just hope the players do the right thing and pay off their escrow, they owe it they need to pay it.

You're absolutely correct when it comes to the schedule, American TV comes first and to hell with the founder clubs and their petit problems.

That said and I hate to say this I'm glad the Leafs got bounced it will finally mean an end to the Dubas era and this namby pamby game that they were playing.

At first I thought that drafting all these little guys was smart because it sure looked like the league was headed towards a super fast highly skilled game with no tolerance for the hooking, holding, cross checking, mugging and intimidation fest that the game was, but I soon realized that the league couldn't change the game not when physicality, domination and intimidation, inflicting pain still won and will always win. People who played the game at any kind of competitive level know this to be true, and no matter how much people wish it were different, it just won't ever be.

Why bother being a fan then? Oilers are still playing and they are far from southern.
I'll be the most surprised guy in the room if the Oil make it out of the west.

Considering what's left I'm thinking Dallas - Carolina in the final only because both have solid in game fan bases, both have huge TV revenue generating audiences, so lot's and lot's of money. I also see that there will be lots of enthusiasm attached to the series which may spark some real interest in Houston to have their own NHL team, a new team and not a transfer.
