The thing is, as it was developing I knew Gudas had one play and that was to eliminate the defender. I was watching for it and saw the can opener, but couldn’t see him grab the stick. The ref was looking from the front, in left corner, and had to have seen it and definitely should have bee looking for it.

What’s the ref supposed to do if the player is smart enough to do it where he can’t see it?

Why do the leafs suck in the playoffs? It's actually very simple. Time and space are shorter in the postseason. What does this mean gameplay wise? It means simple and basics work. Dump and out muscle guys on the boards. Greasy drive to the net goals. Rebounds None of that "magic" stuff works.

What does this mean for the leafs? It means all of our cute stuff is completely dreadful come postseason time despite working in the regular season.

Why do we do blind drop passes. Why do we burn time on the PP with our awful pass back.

Also did we get a single rebound shot this series? It felt like we fanned or got blocked on everything.

Why are both officials unable to see the full ice 3on2 pick leading to the GWG feels like the question to ask. This wasnt subtle, Gudas charges full ice to pull the D out of position.

I think it's funny that of all the missed and bad calls, somehow, miraculously, not only did a linesmen see the puck get knocked over the glass in a crowd on a split second play but were confident in knowing exactly who's stick it was and it TOTALY wasn't the Florida bench making the call. Of all the bullshit that is let go, which actually impacts the game, that is the crap the league wants to focus on. If there was ever a time to miss a puck over the glass penalty, that was it, but no the league wouldn't want to look like a joke right? Wouldn't want the lack of a call to directly influence a game!

I’ll say it again. Our 40M offence dried up when we had more PPs as well.

This Core needs a real retool.

We score just one or two PPs, and could start on time. We would be in a series.

Refs are crap. But they gave us PPs. We just passed it around and never shot. Team just sucked.

Core 4 needs to be split.
Keefe should go back to the amateurs.
Dubas better be feeling the heat.

Reilly and Nylander are the only real leafs.

They also killed an offensive zone chance for us to check on Marc Staal who didnt miss a shift and missed 3-4 too many men calls. Overall it was just a poorly called game

I think the Holl penalty last year and the Gudas non call this year are basically the same penalty, imo.
Jankrok might have been able to poke the puck or deflect it, who knows, but his stick was held and he was taken out of the play by a guy without the puck.

I don’t know. I can’t fathom why he wasnt watching for it, knowing that’s the only thing Gudas could possibly do on that play.
That’s the only type of penalty that should be called in OT.

as long as Tavares's contract is on the books Leafs should not look to go for the cup. They should use this period wisely and retool/rebuild.

The window is closed for the next 2 to 3 years IMO, Leafs gotta have a foresight and do the right thing. Bring in a new GM and let him get this roster ready to compete within 3 to 4 years time

Matthews is more talented than every single one of those guys, and still isn't good enough to be great. That was my point. He's already the best, but I don't think he will ever be the greatest. And that's a damn shame.

I think the main difference between the Leafs and other teams is that other teams realize the officials won't call penalties in certain moments and take full advantage.

Paul Maurice's gameplan was a masterclass of manipulating the officials. He basically told Florida to play dirty all series and then kept holding up his fingers and complaining about the lopsided penalties every post-game interview until eventually the referees end up even (or in Florida's favour) despite them running the Leafs, elbowing, and generally just committing way more penalties in a game. They were the second most penalized team in the entire NHL due to their style of play, but all of a sudden they commit no more than 2 penalties a game after Paul Maurice called them out for 2 games. That little finger trick was smart because the officials were scared of a spotlight being put on them and wanted the penalties to be similar so Paul Maurice wouldn't call them out and be shown all over the TV with his fingers up. If Keefe had any gamesmanship, he would have countered that - but he doesn't. He needs to go. He bet his job on Holl, and that ship has sailed.

The Leafs try to play the game clean and it backfires because the other team is getting an advantage with all their dirty plays. I don't blame the Leafs for trying to play clean because they seem to get borderline penalties called against them and then they just try for a clean game.

Teams like Tampa/Boston/Florida basically dare the referees to make a call in a high pressure game. They manipulate the officials. Stamkos fighting Matthews, last year Matthews being held in OT, the diving, Gudas grabbing the stuck, etc. They know the referees won't call any of those in critical moments, but the Leafs get wary to play the same way because they actually get called. Like Holl's interference in Game 7 whereas Gudas grabbing the stick is clean today.

That's why I prefer to cheer for teams that don't play dirty or take advantage of 'playoff (dirty) hockey'. Colorado was great last year, even with all the dirty plays by other 'veteran teams', they were just so much above everyone else that they would win regardless.

We got PPs this series. We had them ripe and early. But we passed it around for flashy looks vs trying to score.

This one wasn’t on the Refs. 2023 we had PPs more than the opposition.

Vs Boston we always had less.

Avs did the re-tool and got Rantanen, Makar (other peices) out of it.

Tavares is an albatross of a contract so Leafs gotta ride it until he is off the books and use that time to re-tool/re-build.

IMO they definitely need to unload Marner, his attitude is garbage. Matthews if he wants anything north of 12 AAV and is not willing to commit before July 1st then he can go as well.

We can't be bending over backwards for players that refuse to show up in the post season. We need a new look and a new vision.

And it starts by looking at new Gm and new coach ASAP and making quick decisions before July 1st.
