We go through the same cycle every year where we think Komi will improve at the start of the season and every year he disappoints. He will cost us games this year if we plan on actually attempting to make the playoffs. He is labelled a defensive defenseman that is terrible at defense, doesn't get any worse.

Read what I said though. Wilson was always getting the D-men to pinch and play aggressively, which was awful for slower guys. Carlyle doesn't appear to want them to take those risks (based on interviews and what he's said about his team's style of play) and would rather the forwards do a better job getting back and helping.

He'll have to be on unconditional waivers if they are planning on buying him out. Which doesn't seem to be the case.

Waiving him frees up a NHL roster spot.

Buying him out frees up a contract spot.

Nothing else is gained buying him out.

Maybe the Leafs need contract space for a deal they are working on?

I believe there is something else in the works and these are the only valid reasons to do this.

A buyout of connolly wouldn't even count as one of the amnesty buyouts since connolly is a ufa before next season.

but a buyout doesn't give us any benefit anyways. We lose a useful player, save no capspace, and get no benefit at all.

If they waive him and nobody picks him up, he can be sent to the Marlies and that would open another spot on the Leafs, he would still be on the cap but next year he would be released and then the cap would be reduced.

Honestly, I would have rather bought out Liles (who was brutal postconcussion) or Komisarek. I know we have one more but even Grabo at 5.5 I'm skeptical of.

Good. From the sounds of it, yesterday Carlyle wasn't impressed with Connolly work ethic. If you don't want to work hard, get out.

Good for the kids.

They're not wasting a buy out on an expiring contract. Either he gets claimed or he's staying with the Marlies. If he doesn't report, that's when **** will hit the fan. This is just to clear a roster spot, imo.

Yup its not a good idea to make room for Kadri/Frattin on our roster - but inside play Tim Connolly and Lombardi? Give your head a shake.

This isn't about money - this is about icing the most competitive roster.

Why would they have to buy-out Connolly to make room for Kadri and/or Frattin if they're putting him on waivers? That alone makes room, no need to waste a buy-out on a pending FA.

Leafs using one of their amnesty buyouts on Connolly would be great news, as long as they save one for Komisarek next year.

I applaud Nonis, as he is really going to town cleaning up the inherited mess and making room for younger better players.

There is no reason why the Leafs would use a buyout on a player who is a UFA next year, and they have 7 million in cap space now. Makes no sense. If anything, Nonis will use those amnesty buyouts in trades and aquiring contracts that are too expensive for other teams.

Grabo was one of our best forwards last year, Liles deserves another chance based on his play pre-concussion, and Komisarek deserves another look based on need and a new coach (it can be a very short, critical look if necessary).

Good, I've hated Connolly since day one. A lazy "skilled" guy who doesn't put up numbers, useless. I dont want to waste a buyout on him, but if he's not on the roster, I'm happy.

Why would they do that ? Make 0 sense. They can pay him to play on the Marlies if need be and watch him walk next year. Better to save the buy outs for players that are worth it.

They have to pay him either way, and buyout or not he would count against the teams cap this year even if demoted to the AHL as per the new CBA rules preventing burying of contracts in the minors loophole closed.

Connolly is worthy of a buyout, and Komisarek is the other and then all of LACK (Lombardi,Armstrong,Connolly & Komisarek) have been dealt with appropriately.

Hopefully some team claims him on waivers, saving the need to use a buyout to get rid of him. Either way Nonis is really going to town determined to turn this teams fortunes around by removing a lot of dead weight accumulated in the past.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe there are only 3 deals a year you cna make where you retain salary. That means, either moving your player out (ala Lombardi) or taking another teams player (ala Lombardi from Phoenix's end).

It seems the Leafs would rather someone take Connolly for free off waivers rather than burning another one of those deals in two days.

They would probably try to move him on retaining salary deal if no one wants him for free. But it seems they want to see if anyone wants him for nothing first.

It makes sense, if someone can take him off your hands for free, sure, take him. If not, then yeah, Leafs have the other option to use to get rid of him. They would basically be getting nothing in a trade anyways and would likely have to retain some salary as well. I don't know if he will get claimed or not but I hope he does. He could probably still help a team out in a depth role, albeit he would be an expensive depth player. Maybe a team like Canes/Penguins/Red Wings/Devils put a claim on him?

Trading Lombardi and Connolly is a good step towards getting rid of the junk on the roster and actually giving some of our youngster some time. Even if they struggle, you know what, let them. At this point, you have to see what Kadri can do in the NHL and you want to see Frattin take a step forward in the NHL.

I hope the lines combinations are as follows:

Lupul-Bozak-Kessel
JVR-Grabovski-MacArthur
Frattin-Kadri-Kulemin
Komarav-McClement-Brown
ex: Steckel

For important draws/defensive situations, you can still bump up McClement but for the most part, let Kadri play center and see what he can do. If he fails, move him to the wing but give him a legit shot at center first. Kulemin and Frattin can help cover some of his defensive mistakes as well.

Liles and Komisarek are here on borrowed time
thats over 9 million per season

I'm confident Liles will bounce back. Good dressing room guy, and will help our powerplay. Meanwhile, Komisarek I believe can be replaced and then some by the likes o Mark Fraser and Holzer.

So you want MLSE to pay, spending their own money and buyout other teams mistakes instead of our own?

But first you want Nonis to trade for this bad contracts so that they can be bought out.
