TSN: Leafs' Connolly placed on waivers - McKenzie: Cleared waivers.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe there are only 3 deals a year you cna make where you retain salary. That means, either moving your player out (ala Lombardi) or taking another teams player (ala Lombardi from Phoenix's end).

It seems the Leafs would rather someone take Connolly for free off waivers rather than burning another one of those deals in two days.

They would probably try to move him on retaining salary deal if no one wants him for free. But it seems they want to see if anyone wants him for nothing first.

His contract only has 48 games to go, we have something like 9 million in cap space at the moment with nothing to spend it on.

Doesn't it make more sense to pay him to sit in the pressbox for the rest of the season and use the buyout for something more productive? Or am I missing something?

Actually, if Kulemin plays like last year, we would have a good bottom 6 foward in our hands. A bull on skates who is very sound defensively, and able to pot 10-15ish goals is still pretty valuable. If he plays like a 25-30 goal scorer, then we have another top 6 forward!

Why wouldn't they be outspoken? He's got them primed and well set up. What you are about to start seeing but couldn't see before comes from one man. No doubt you'll be like those that trumpet the Chiarelli's, Shero's and Bowman's of the world.

It's not great news really...we don't need the cap space this season and since the amnesty buyouts last for two years maybe we'll need it a year from now.

There isn't much benefit to the Leafs buying out Connolly other than doing him a favour. Sending him down to the Marlies is a better scenario.
 
A lot of people calling for Komi next, but some (including myself) would be willing to give him another chance under Carlyle. The best games Komi played last year were under Carlyle (I think Schenn looked better as well) and it probably has less to do with Carlyle and more to do with the relief of no more Wilson.

We need a stay at home, physical D-man and I know Komi has been pretty bad in the past, but if Wilson was telling him to pinch more and challenge more aggressively it would leave guys like Komi and Schenn exposed way more than if you let them play conservatively with support from the forwards back-checking (which Carlyle apparently preaches).

So I'd like to see how Komi can perform this year playing more defensively. Worst case he's the same old Komi and we sit him or waive him and that's it for him. Best case he gains some confidence and really helps this team with veteran leadership and physical play. I think it's worth the risk for what is likely not a playoff calibre team in such a short season.

Just play him in the AHL.

It is a veteran team so he wouldn't feel like an old man down there.

According to a new agreement between the NHLPA and the NHL, teams can use one of their two compliance buyouts on a player with at least a $3 million in average salary this season and incur a full cap hit, but suffer no cap hit next season or beyond.

His contract is done this year, meaning he has no cap hit next year.

Am I missing something? This doesn't seem like 'great news' at all.

EDIT: If the Leafs do indeed buy Connolly out, then the entire managment group deserves to be fired for incompetence.

They should save both and potentially use amnesty buyouts next summer when teams look to move players when the cap drops back down.

That would make more sense to me. Allowing teams to throw us extra assets to take on their headaches, then just washing those headaches away with all of MLSE's $$ on amnesty buyouts.

Why would they buy him out if he is a UFA next year and will not be part of the cap hit, if they just release him.

The only reason would be to open up a spot?

Yup its not a good idea to make room for Kadri/Frattin on our roster - but inside play Tim Connolly and Lombardi? Give your head a shake.

This isn't about money - this is about icing the most competitive roster.

I don't get it either. I trust the news outlets when they saw they suspect it's a buyout, but based on the concrete info we have (connolly not at practice), I would be inclined to think it's a trade (even a really bad one). It could also just be the leafs hoping that someone claims him, or maybe they are just sending him down to the minors.

Buying him out basically saves the leafs $900,000, but means they don't get to use connolly as a player (obviously), and that another team can sign him. There's no cap savings or anything like that, so it really doesn't make much sense to me buy him out.

We go through the same cycle every year where we think Komi will improve at the start of the season and every year he disappoints. He will cost us games this year if we plan on actually attempting to make the playoffs. He is labelled a defensive defenseman that is terrible at defense, doesn't get any worse.

If that is a part of the reason, I would have to think a trade is in the works. Why else would we need to open up a contract spot so urgently? Having an extra contract for 4 months doesn't really hurt us.

Waiving him frees up a NHL roster spot.

Buying him out frees up a contract spot.

Nothing else is gained buying him out.

Maybe the Leafs need contract space for a deal they are working on?

Mirtle seems to think we will do a Lombardi type trade (salary retention) if no one claims him at full salary.
 
Just leave him there in the AHL. Mlse has money so just let it burn..

Hes worth a condition 2nd IMO.
