Question: so if Connolly passes through waivers and the Leafs do an accelerated amnesty, that means they've already used their amnesty for this offseason, and would have to wait til the 2014 offseason to use their last and final amnesty, correct? So in other words, Komisarek wont be amnestied this summer?

What purpose would using the accelerated buyout serve? We would still have to pay him and he would still count against the cap.
IMO he either gets claimed, gets traded with us eating half his salary or he is a Marlie.

There is no advantage to using the accelerated compliance buyout on Connolly. Likely they will waive him and stick him in the minors if no one picks him up. This way they will save $900,000 cap space this year. They could use a regular buyout which I'm hoping they do not use if it requires use of cap space next year. If he is in the minors, they might be able to get someone to pick him up on recall waivers at half his salary later on in the season. All, in all just handling a veteran and his contract who is not good enough for the team.

Just move on baby. Do you really want him up after an injury so Leafs can win a couple more games and move down in the draft? Not me.

Just use the regular buyout. See ya wouldn't want to keep ya.

kind of an odd move from the perspective that having him on the cap didnt hurt us any this season. so he is either being bought out or Nonis is trying to give him a chance to play elsewhere. There must not of been a trade out there for him. but this isnt a surprise by any means. there were too many bodies up front and it makes more sense to play the younger players. I think its pretty safe to say Nonis' plan starts by trying to get a good pick for this years draft.

I don't think it has much to do with playing youth.

Burke always said he wanted a top six of skill guys and a bottom six of grinders. Problem is that he never did it. I think Nonis is just clearing out the guys who aren't skilled enough for the top six and not grinder enough for the bottom six.

Pretty much doing what Burke always said he was going to do but didn't. Carlyle was probably looking at Nonis and saying, "where the hell am I going to play these guys?"

Carlyle has verified that this is no longer the case two days ago in his interview. Top six and bottom 6 mentality has been thrown out the window. The 3rd line will be expected to chip in offensively on a regular basis.

Overall, I hate this move. I like that it opens up a roster spot for a prospect (which I believe was the main rationale behind this move), but I hate the implications much more. Are we going to have to start handing out NMCs to 2nd/3rd liners to draw them here? Why would any player of note come here without it after this?

Is Frattin better offensively, or defensively or has a better versatility than Connolly? It seems like the era of entitlement got reversed a bit.

Players recognize that when they suck at their job, there will be demotions, just like with any other occupation. So they're not going to point to Tim Connolly and say "I won't sign with you because I fear you will demote me if I ever have a 36 point season." Good offensive players don't ever expect themselves to produce 36 point seasons.

Plus look at teams like NYR and Philly, they do this stuff all the time and still have no problems attracting free agents. In the end, money talks.

Not necessarily no. Teams have 2 to be used over the next 2 summers (other than this week of course), we can use one now, one this summer if we want.

You sure about that? I thought teams were allowed to use their 2013 offseason amnesty now (the accelerated one), and then were allowed to use one again in 2014? I thought you were only allowed to use one per offseason? Although I guess these next 2 days could be considered the offseason still... And then use our last amnesty this summer? I just want Komi gone.

I can't understand your reasoning whatsoever. Carlyle has said Connolly has been extremely underwhelming in camp. You don't keep a player simply because they have a contract.

No, you don't need to hand out NMC to 2/3 liners because they're worried about being sent down. It's the same for every team. Be "extremely underwhelming" and get sent away.

I agree with this 100%. My previous post(s) was directed to those speculating that he may be bought out/waived, which makes no sense when we can easily stick him on the Marlies, as you said.

Do you think McClement will be able to produce more than 36 points with 3rd line minutes like Connolly did? I don't mind a player with a big contract getting demoted based on his play (Finger), but Connolly was clearly not among the worst players of the remaining roster.

Tell me, what makes Frattin such a better choice in an offensive role (top 9)?

Yes, because they're forced to give everyone and their dog a NMC, and use cap circumventing contracts to overpay the players.

Flyers' NMC/NTC: Briere, Hartnell, Fedotenko, Timonen, Pronger, Coburn, L. Schenn, Grossmann, Bryzgalov. Nuff said.

Komi will not be gone this season. He is needed.

Teams can used two amnesty buyouts. They can happen:
1. Before the 2013 season
2. After the 2013 season
3. After the 2014 season

The limit is 2. Can use them whenever. Connolly doesn't qualify as an amnesty as he doesn't have a contract next year.

By all accounts, Connolly had a bad season, and a bad camp this year. McClement brings a totally different game. He could get 10 points on the season and still be more valuable than a 36 point Connolly because of the PK and shutdown abilities that he brings. I don't even know if Frattin will be in the top 9 (with Komarov reportedly impressing), but he brings a better game than Connolly. He is more physical and has a much better shot. Basically Connolly has no niche on this team. He was brought as an experiment between Lupul and Kessel, but that didn't work, leaving him no where else on the roster that he fits in ideally.

It's kind of funny that for all Burke's talk, it's actually Nonis who is living up to all the "every game is a tryout" and getting rid of entitlement. If the kids are ready to play, then they play. Don't bury them behind average vets who won't be here long.

Burke was trying to save his job (and still lost it anyway lol)

There's no urgency for Nonis to rush himself into the line of fire and be impatient like Burke was.

I'd imagine the Lombardi and Connolly decisions have been in the works for a while.
