That may be true but this year there are many teams just outside the bubble that have played 2-3-4 games less than the Leafs. It doesn't look good.

Yup our Leafs sit 25th of 31 teams on point% at .500.

Only 7 teams on the season are performing below that at this point.

Don't think this team cares if it makes the playoffs, I actually think they'd be ok with missing the playoffs because it give them more time to spend their millions.

4-3 with with two back to backs since the coaching change. Complete change of play style on the fly. Were people expecting us to run the table from day 1.

Today we need 67 points out of 52 games, ~106 point pace
The Babs was fired we needed 75 out of 59 games, 104 point pace

The bleeding has been stopped, but we need some positive action soon, running out of runway.

Leafs have 30 points currently and need at least 96 minimum to have any chance at a WC spot.

Leafs need 66 points from 52 remaining games = .635 points% required from a team playing .500.

There are only 6 NHL teams performing above .635% on the season.

Leafs would need to go from 25th currently to top 6 the rest of the season in points% to get into a WC spot opportunity.

Leafs have lost 13 of their 1st X 30 games in regulation so with 104 points available needing 66 = 38 points lost or 19 regulation losses or less with OTL results.

Season is lost. No question about it.

It doesn't look good. I'm not sure I'm calling it lost, just yet. But it's not good.

30 points in the bank, with 52 games to go. 32 more wins means 64 more points to get to 94 points. That's a low, low number that could make the playoffs. We made it in with 95 when we faced Washington, and fewer points have made it in in the West a few times.

(redacted some bad math)

Reasons for pessimism: The numbers. The facts.

Reasons for optimism: Keefe. The equally dismal play of our division rivals.

On one thought, this team is too talented not too figure it out, and we have a coach who seems to know what the issues are.
On another thought, the team's level to combat adversity is very bad.
If they can get through this, they will have shown a lot to us. If they can't, then the group is too flawed.
It's all up to the players.

The players seem to be completely unaware about how dire it is and they give up so easily. No doom and gloom, but this season seems to be a write off. Might as well sell off some assets and look forward to the draft.

When you look at our schedule to date, it’s pretty depressing, apart from crap teams we don’t do well at all.

Seriously. If December doesn't go well it's time to sell off Barrie and Muzzin, we probably recoup our protected 1st this year in that case as well as adding more assets.

Right now Leafs need to play at a 105 point pace season = .640 points % rate [105/164]

Currently after 30 games only 6 NHL teams are playing at or above the rate. Last year only 3 teams all year played above that .640 pts%.

52 remaining games at .640 points% pace = 66 points + 30 currently = 96 points final and possible WC spot.

Leafs need to get on a hot streak and win like 8 of the next 11 heading into the mid point..

Right now we're 13 W and 13 L and 4 OTL points playing at .500 points % and with a 8-3-0 next 11 games we would be at 21-16-4 for 46 points after 41 games (mid point) = .560 pts% which would put on pace for 92 points and then a realistic shot at a playoff spot with a slight bump.

If we continue at our current .500 pace 5-5-1 and sit 41 points after 41 games [82 point pace] mid season then we would need 55 points in the final 41 games = .670 points% = unachievable.

Luckily for us we are in a lousy division.

Bos 1st
Tbl 2nd

We're competing wth Montreal, Florida, Buffalo for the third. We're slightly behind them in points per game. But 50 games to go, we can straighten the ship. And get passed them.

Forget the wild card spot...we have much better chances at a divisional spot.

There is no way in hell that any one of Montreal, Buffalo or Florida is playing .640 hockey from here to the end of the season.

We just need to be better than those teams, that's it.

I think we'll pass Montreal and Buffalo no problem, Florida is the tricky one. I can see them finishing with ~100 points. I think it'll be between us and Florida for the 3rd spot.

I wouldn't worry about the other teams.

Leafs have to get to a 96-98 pt pace. Don't count on the line being any lower than that.

If they don't get any points out of the backup goalie, then forget about it. It still hinges on that. Can they get more points when a backup goalie is playing?

If we can't outplay the Habs, Sabres, and Panthers we don't deserve a playoff spot anyways

There's time to make up ground, but those losses to MTL and Buf are frustrating when we were in a position to win them all and simply pissed it away with stupidity

Right now, we have the same number of points as Montreal and Buffalo... but they both have one game in hand. Shouldn't be tough to play at a better pace than those teams.

Florida is 1 point ahead with 3 games in hand and Tampa is 1 point behind with 4 games in hand. We just have to catch one of Tampa or Florida.

Tampa and Florida play each other on Tuesday... so we can hope for a 2 point game and gain ground on one of them. They both have games against the Islanders and Bruins this next week too, and the Lightning are playing the Caps also. So some really tough games coming up for both of them. We could be in a much better position to make the playoffs as early as next Saturday.

Florida has bad goaltending and they haven't exactly been consistent either...they have two wins where they came back from 4-0 down. It's extremely unlikely to see them playing at a 100 point pace IMO. We'll make it.

Might even be a blessing to face Tampa instead of Boston every time.
