This critique is hard to get. We have asset that have been developing in one of the best euro leagues there is and seems to be one of the marque forwards there at the moment. If not the best outside of the KHL. He was nearly good enough as 23yo and now comes back as better player. If he adds compete here great, if we don't have spot and can trade him for minor asset great. If we waive him, nothing is lost.

It's not Malgins fault that he was traded for Marchment, who wasn't as 25yo the player he is now. So we basicly say that we shouldn't have given even Marchment a chance, because he was over the hill already, so why for the f***s sake we whine about that trade anyway.

If this pushes Robertson back the AHL for few months it's probably good thing for both players, if after this Robertson makes the team he earned it.

Unfortunately I do think the legacy of the trade has led to a bit of unfair criticism towards the guy. If he had a different name at worst you'd see maybe disinterest in the guy from some due to his size.

At the end of the day he's not blocking anyone, and his contract isn't stopping the team from signing another guy. He either makes the team and contributes (reward) or he's cut and fully buried (no risk)

Well said.

Yeah. No, there isn't 5 Marlies pushing for spots - Robertson and Joey Anderson perhaps, but from what I can see, the others aren't anywhere close.

What "more" ?

He can "start" by trying to look like an NHL player - his cameo last year showed clearly that he's not ready for it yet. That's okay, he doesn't have to be yet.

But this idea that the Leafs are "holding" back Robertson is just false.

Also, what "young guys" that deserve opportunities, aren't getting them yet?
We can disagree, but Steeves was great all year in the A, Holmberg a #1C on a good team in the SEL and Abruzzese (longer odds) was an Olympian coming off a strong college career.

Just curious if anyone knows, is Malgin getting that much less in the swiss league even though he lead his team in points? Cause why would you come here for 750k?
Very roughly i think the average in the NLA is somewhere around 250K. I guess that Malgin would then make something similar to those 750K if he stayed in Zurich

Yeah you're right. I'm just a troll for questioning any Dubas move. Perhaps we can pry Petan out of whatever league he's playing in for further roster construction
Yes. That is exactly it.

He's not playing on the Marlies Slick
Not at the moment anyway. He will be a training camp and given a chance to make the team. He will be there with others who may end up as Marlies.

Malgin is not the player who win with in the llayoffs. Plays on the outside and small. This is a nothing signing. Won’t play 40 games

Thanks guess he's trying to get a bigger bag this time around 🤔

Dubas has to prove he was right.
He has already proven that.

The player he traded away just signed 4 year @ $4.50 mil deal with Dallas and had multiple such offers including from Carolina.

Leafs could never afford for cap reason that level of player in Marchment, so by dealing him away, he is able to afford and is able to fit Malgin at his 1 year $750k deal.

Marchment would have walked just like Hyman and others for cap reasons so now Leafs have something to show from that trade.

Just think if our cap had been better managed and we could keep some of these guys like Marchment

Holmberg is a big maybe. Abrusseze is still so young & raw.

But for me, Steeves isn't an NHLer.

Really? I took a break on the boards last summer and always just thought he was waived and on some clubs AHL team.

You were half correct. He was waived only no team wanted him, so he remained Leafs property.

Denis Malgin Clears Waivers

January 6, 2021

Jan 6: Malgin has cleared and can continue to play in Switzerland.

Jan 5: The Toronto Maple Leafs have placed another depth forward on waivers. Denis Malgin has hit the wire as he continues to play in Switzerland for Lausanne. Maple Leafs GM Kyle Dubas said he would not interrupt that season for a player who was not guaranteed a roster spot, so Malgin will finish the year in the NLA before returning to North America. To do that, he needed to be waived at some point.

What brings you to that conclusion on Steeves?

I don't think his skating, or his play / IQ off the puck, are good enough.

I also don't see his production translating into the NHL. I don't think the upside is there. To me he feels like a player that will struggle a lot in the NHL where time & space are at a premium - I see him fading out of games, and not having the toolset to battle his way back into it.

lol. but maybe marchment woulda helped put us over the top in the last 2 seasons....

maybe now matthews will re-sign given that he has a fellow swiss with him on the team

Abruzzese is older than Steeves, older than Robertson, and the same age as Holmberg. I was underwhelmed with his NHL audition. I personally think the younger Steeves is closer to an NHL player than Abruzzese

His pro game just started - huge step up from going college to NHL, compared to spending a few years in Europe or the AHL.

But yes, I got their respective ages wrong - thanks for letting me know, and my mistake.
